National Book Award winner Nathaniel Philbrick, recounts the Battle of Little Bighorn that took place at Little Bighorn River in Central Montana on June 25, 1876. The conflict between the U.S. Army's 7th Cavalry led by Lt. Col. George Custer and several of the Lakota Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne tribes led by Sitting Bull resulted in the death of General Custer and saw his forces severely defeated. Nathaniel Philbrick discusses his book at Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver.

The full message was "“Benteen-Come on-Big village-Be quick-bring packs. PS-Bring [ammunition] packs.” Philbrick omits the last part so not to contradict his narrative. The pack train was composed of plodding mules who would not 'Be quick'. The message was contradictory. Also Benteen knew less about the battlefield and the deployment of forces then Custer or Reno bc Benteen arrived to the battle after either of those two.

Crazy Horse from my understanding never was on the end of the village where Reno made his halfhearted attempt to charge. Crazy Horse was a late arrival to the battle at Last Stand Hill who then led a flanking maneuver which overran the remaining soldiers ... it was Rain In The Face and Gall who led the repulsion of Reno and then made the abrupt turn that sent the then awaken village towards Custer's position along with the incoming Cheyenne who joined the fray with the likes of Two Moons from the other end of the village

Parts of this narrative are incorrect. Gaul actually faced Reno at the first attack. Gual lost his wife there. Crazy Horse was on the north end of the village and led the assault on Custer. His group eventually dispateched Miles Keough and his company.

Custer was the commanding officer.... he is to blame for that fact alone. That is the price of command. The degree of guilt shared by Reno and Benteen is a valid topic, as long as you understand Custer is ultimately responsible, period.

Enjoyed this book but found Philbrick far to biased towards Custer, Reno had lost 40% of his force when Benteen came upon them he had no option but to stay and support Reno.

Agreed. What enmity Benteen had towards Custer did nit include the men. Benteen was no coward either. Considering what happened at the Battle of Washita, for all Benteen knew, Custer had deserted those behind him, not caring what happened to them. If not for Benteen, none of the 7th at all wpuld have survived. As one of Custer's scouts said, all the ammunition including that on the pack mules wouldn't have been enough.

Cmon.. explain how Boston Custer passed Benteen to join his brothers... he dawdled on the backtrail... he did not show any urgency and could have hit the native flank... if he followed his orders... mot saying a vast different outcome... but that is a fact

@@wrbliam , but there were Crow who observed Benteen's column who stated both horses and men were stressed and fatigued by the heat and steep terrain they scouted. The mules with the packs were burned up with heat and bolted from their handlers when they caught scent of water. It took no small amount of time and trouble getting the mules out of the particular mucky bend of the river Benteen was an experienced cavalryman and knew when men and beasts needed to take it easy. Remember they'd done a forced march from the very earliest hours of the morning and that after weeks on the trail with hardly and sleep time that night.

And a sour, taciturn disposition predisposed against his commander... great in defense... not so good following the sound of battle... remember if Weir hadn’t sought to follow the sound of volleys... no one would have moved off the hill... even though they saw the warriors depart much earlier for a damn hot fight... Custer had explicitly ordered a junction and it is fair to say Benteen failed in a dereliction of duty...

What movie one sees to introduce them to a topic is irrelevant. He was born in 1972, for a lot of Gen Xers Little Big Man was their introduction to Custer.
