I have used Texas rigged since I was 12 and I’m 40 now. I like worm hooks a ton and EWG. I don’t feel like like one is better than the other. My best advice to newer Texas rig guys is throw it often and try to keep your weight as light as possible. I rarely ever go about 1/4 ounce bow except for deep weeds in the summer I’ll use 3/8-1/2 ounce.

I'm confused as to how I could ever catch bass 30-40 years ago when a casting reel retrieved that lure at some unknown speed? I didn't have a clue what "gear ratio" was and still bass actually bit my lures on occasion.

Welcome to Fl! For me late 80s and 90s always went with Tru Turn 2/0 hooks and continued to be my choice in 2023. 1/8oz I agree…recently caught several in area with current and NO weight except for hook and soft plastic. I think as light as possible for any area is best.

Texas rigged caffeine shad no peg 3/16 oz to 1/4 oz is an absolute killer the slip weight controls the dart of the fluke/trick worm action of the caffeine shad! The dart draws them to it and they’ll either hit on the fall of the dart or after it sits on the bottom for 3-4 seconds! Great video! New sub!

I love , love finesse fishing fir bass, needless to say, but I super enjoy texas rig bass fishing. For your average size worms, I go with offset shank worm hook because I like the smaller profile and the way it is in line with the worm. EWG for craws. My go-to worms are ribbon tail worms. I love that it gives extra action to whatever I'm doing. Texas rig weightless in the spring for me. Love all the ideas and tips on here and comment section. God bless everyone!

PRO TIP; Put a bead between your drop weight and hook, this will keep the weight from cutting your knot and losing your hook/bait. This will also lower the drag the weight gives when reeling in fast.

I've only targeted bass for about a decade (it was all bluegill and catfish until I caught my PB 4' channel cat), and almost all of my success has been with soft plastic swim baits and spinners. I haven't had the patience to really finesse fish, but last year, I dedicated so much time to throwing a Texas rig, and I got squat lol I've caught huge steelhead trout with a 2" curly tailed grub on a Ned Rig, so I'm gonna try smaller worms this year - something in the middle, like a 4" curly tail - and definitely gonna go Ned Rig unless throwing right into the pads.

I had the privilege of fishing the lower Potomac for a few years in the 90s. I usually fished from the bank and had a couple of fantastic locations. One was in a cove on the Maryland side just before the Wilson bridge. I had another spot that was even more amazing but it was a hike to get to. It was a little south of the Woodrow Wilson and up a little tributary. It was incredible in the heat of the summer. I’ve also fished the upper Potomac around Brunswick and Sandy Hook. Also not as far north, around Dickerson and the Monocacy Aquaduct. They produced a lot of bass too, but they were generally about half the size. It’s been over 25 years since I’ve fished the Potomac but if I get the opportunity I would love to fish it again.

All I use are 1-0 offset shank worm hooks like the first one you showed, my nephew only uses the ewg, wide whatever you call them in a 2 or 3-0 size. I always catch more fish when we fish together. I always figured those clumsy wide hooks were too obvious visually. Its not that i miss hookups, they just dont go after his for some reason. Both Fishing zoom trick worms no weights. Wondering if anyone has thoughts on visibility since the majority seem to prefer them bigger wide hooks, I fish more from years of doing, he being younger tends to go by books and videos etc, but always asks for a hook after hes just not catching like me. We both fiah same technique, toos, let sink, tug and reel, wait a few seconds, repeat, roland martin style. Fish in our lake range from 1.5 to 8 pounds, majority are 2 to 3 lbs.

I'm not a huge fan of the straight shank hooks myself (round bend or otherwise) but many excellent anglers have great success with them. Brian Latimer comes to mind. He seems to use them exclusively. I prefer EWG hooks for Texas rigging. Weight size for me is usually determined more by water type than by cover. If it's a fast current river I'm fishing, I can't use light weights because the current won't allow the worm to sink. On a pond or slow moving river, I'll use a lighter weight, just because I don't need the heavy weight any more, and you get a slower action that the fish seem to prefer more.

I’m 68 and started bass fishing when I was 15 and have caught hundreds of bass on a straight shank offset hooks, usually #3-#4 hooks, though I have several other top named brands wide gap hooks and had success on them too, though never afraid to tie a straight shank for any soft bait, especially for my worms and craws, unless it’s required to use another style due to the baits size. There are so many things these younger fisherman have learned from and the same thing we heard them from in the early ‘70’s and that’s pure advertisement! If you are a pretty good fisherman, I think more of it is skill, not so much brands and styles!

Nice video, Nathan! I 'm a bit shy with worm hooks as well. I don't seem to miss many fish with the EWG, even in considerable grass areas, so why fix what's not broken? When I fish a 4" thin worm like a power worm, sometimes I'll go with a #1 or 1/0 worm hook, but the worm's not straight after you skin hook it cause it doesn't lay parallel to the worm as does an EWG, and I'm often light lining & weighting such small baits, so I'd prefer skin hooking to burying the hook point, requiring greater force on 8/10# line to get an adequate hookset,. When I saw your straight tail (finesse) worm rigged with the EWG, kind of told me you're not a big fan....

I am not Nathan but my 2 cents are, co-poly will give you a slower fall rate and a little better action on your worm. Co-poly is thicker but more limber than floro. Co-poloy is way cheaper. Floro sinks, is more sensitive, thinner, less stretch (better hook sets), less visible. That's why pros use it. Co-poly is better than mono in my opinion .

Does anyone ever still use the lead bullet weights? I’ve always used a 3/16 and still catch many. Tungsten is so expensive and it’s not like I can’t afford them, but is everyone satisfied that it’s better than lead? The only reason I’d think to change would be a faster sink rate in deeper water.

Where and when will you be in Florida? Hopefully after this Christmas cold front as the bass will shutdown this weekend but should be active next week and especially for the full moon the first part of January. Ping me if you will be in Central or South Florida and maybe we can meet up or I can recommend some guides to help you locate the big bass 😊

I use straight mono on everything. Sorry Charlie but the milk’s still good. You can not get any bait to stay on flourish or braid without superglue and I’m not using the. Plus neither are as biodegradable as mono is and it doesn’t rot as fast as mono when you break off and kills less fish and other wildlife when you break off.
