June is National Migraine & Headache Awareness month. In an effort to increase awareness NHI created this series of videos with our Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy Founder Cynthia Ribeiro demonstrating how Neuromuscular Therapists can assist patients in the management of the associated discomfort from migraines and headaches.
In this series of videos we’ll be demonstrating work in the prone position. While working in the prone position it will be important to make sure the patient’s face and head are not being pushed into the face cradle. Depending on the position of the face cradle, some clients may feel their throat is being pushed into the table. Massage Therapists are very comfortable working in the prone position; incorporating different tools, including elbows to the posterior neck require practice.
These videos also touch on additional conversation regarding collaborating with the patient’s chiropractor. It is vital to have the patient agree with the collaboration. Helping them understand the value of the collaboration may take practice. As long as they feel you’re on their side and advocating for their benefit the conversation may not be as difficult as many believe.
Most important in the prone position; do not forget the referral pattern of the lower trapezius to the occiput. This is the most over-looked referral pattern.
