In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former Danish prime minister and former NATO chief, on the West's military alliance's role in Eastern Europe and the so-called War on Terror.
We examine his record since assuming office in 2001, his role in the European support for the Iraq War and ask whether his NATO policies since 2009 have backfired.
Is it the West, or Putin who calls the shots in Ukraine? Has NATO reignited the Cold War? Did it create a bigger problem in Libya? And did it botch its mission in Afghanistan?

I think that when Rasmussen says "NATO is the most successful peace movement the world has ever known," and is met with the entire audience in the Oxford Union laughing, we can come to understand just how decrepit their moral standards have been and how his denials of evidence and diverting of questions signifies a completely corrupted alliance whose mandates and objectives are simply covers for the worst kind of international intervention which perpetuates war crimes. I say the worst because they are able to sustain their practices because they have so excellently worked the line between fulfilling their interests through whatever means necessary (i.e. bombing of civilians, overthrowing governments, torture, training of groups that work with heinous organisations etc.) and doing just enough to make their presented evidence sound like a success. And it sounds like a success to many because they are bombarded by western news media, who are indebted to national funding and rely on information received by government officials, and who spew the utter propaganda and bullshit NATO's public relations experts devise to spin their horrendous interventions into success stories, into victories simply because a greater evil was prevented. Unfortunately, they and the news media have created a paradigm in which the evil consists simply of the 'enemy' itself and not on its actions; what makes the enemy evil is not the overall tally of their actions but their image which is based on a stereotype of their actions, for if we were tallying the evil actions themselves, no one would be able to deny that NATO is the actual devil and its enemies simply minor demons; the entire thing is about brand management since evidence will always be provided for and against both sides, meaning that most people will rely on their perception of each side, the image they have of NATO vs. terrorists, to back one decision (NATO intervention) over the other (allowing the terrorists to run amok).

Is Rasmussen a kind of robot ? He looks so inhumane .
@MrEagleEartwig
@MrEagleEartwig 9 жыл бұрын
Juan Carlos Hernandez A Danish tv-show once did a test where a japanese robot scientist had to judge who was more like a robot - incumbent prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen or his social democratic counterpart Helle Thorning-Schmidt. The robot scientist had a hard time choosing but eventually pointed to Thorning-Schmidt as the most possible robot. Moral of the story is that Denmark is a country of robots.
@allanandersen8972
@allanandersen8972 9 жыл бұрын
MrEagleEartwig I am a Dane and i have heard over the years a lot of descriptions of who we are - but robots? That's new. :) There are a wide range of other words i would use to describe us than robots, and the same goes for Anders Rasmussen. He is a man of principle, and tries to do what is right instead of reacting out of pure emotion in contrast to other world leaders. Now that might seem robotic, and sure we are not as emotional as Italians, Russians or as festive as Brazilians. But I can assure you that Anders Rasmussen is actually a human being, just like you and me. We as people are different and have different qualities, and that is not a bad thing. So maybe there are something else at play here than an inhumane robotic leader. But a person driven by striving to do what is right.

I almost feel bad for Rasmussen for being so alone is his school of thought but that's just what it is, a school of thought with double standards and ignorance to the truth and no guts to own up to his own statements. Nice debate.

@PAT123717 Why should you repatriate all Afghanis? America should take in ALL Afghans as refugees because you created the mess there. But you will never learn bcos the military-industrial complex is out of control. This won't be the last intervention Lol
@lahoreaskari2651
@lahoreaskari2651 5 жыл бұрын
@PAT123717 "Racially"....?? What does that mean? I lived in America for 10 years and it is racially as diverse as it gets. Besides, Afghanistan was already a mess and the US intervention made it worse so it definitely bears responsibility. Don't try to absolve the US of its responsibility. Your statements smack of racism. I bet you have forgotten that the white man doesn't belong in America at all as it is the BROWN colored Native Americans' land!! America has become a 3rd world country anyway so if some more 3rd worlders get dumped on your head Pat, then it doesn't matter! 🤣🤣🤣
@lahoreaskari2651
@lahoreaskari2651 5 жыл бұрын
@PAT123717 The only thing that makes sense in your response is that the word "racist" is not used on non-whites. This may have some merit and I agree that there is "reverse racism" as well and some non-white people hold some racist views towards whites as well. Having said that who authorized you to define "American" as "white aryan gentile"?? You have some nerve to assert this. Do you realize how racist you sound in this statement where you exclude Jewish people and all colored people and advocate a WHITE AMERICA?? Listen, the original Americans are the 562 "Native American" tribes of the USA or the "Red Indians" as some people call them who lived there since the beginning of time with tribe names such as Navajo, Cherokee, Sioux, and so many others. The "white aryan gentiles" are only the invaders and colonizers who in reality have no rights over the Americas! Ok, I agree that the US does not bear sole responsibility for Afghanistan but it certainly bears the highest responsibility due to the mess it created there in almost 20 years of war. And moreover, the term "3rd worlders" is a relative term. When you say that Afghans are a "different" race from the Americans, you don't know what you are talking about. There is no such thing as the "pure American white race" because there has been so much mixing that most Americans have a mixture of black ancestry, european ancestry, and in some cases even native american and mexican ancestry...although they may appear "white". So the Afghans cannot be compared to a single homogeneous "white aryan gentile" race!!! (NEWS FOR YOU) I believe America has become a "3rd world country" due to the regressive thinking of its leaders and people already. Therefore, all Afghans need to be dumped into America and Americans should smilingly accept them. Let me tell you, the Afghans may be a lot more racially "pure" and "Aryan White gentile" than most of the mixed race and racially "impure" Americans!! I am willing to bet that even you are not "racially pure" and even you will have a lot of mixed race in your ancestry! Believe me.....otherwise you should conduct a DNA genetic test on Americans and Afghans starting with YOURSELF and my theory will be proven!! 😂😂😂

Not only did he invade Iraq against the descision of UN. -He also violated Danish laws to participate in the war in Iraq as former Premiere minister of Denmark. In Denmark we have laws against aggressive warfare: You need UN clearance to go to war. If Not then either of these criterias have to be met. 1. 5/6 of the parliament votes. 2. A public Vote. With 34% for, 28% against. -The public was represented by 2/3 of the politicians. And it was no where near a 5/6. And not a public vote. Anders Fogh are guilty both National and International. -And he should be judged accordingly.

In 2002 when the world was concerned for an American invasion of Iraq, I brought it then that the following would happen: 1) Iran would be an openly disrupting force in the regions (Happened). 2) Iraq would be a breeding ground for extremists (Happened) 3) The Middle East would be further destabilized (Happened) 4) North Korea and other rogue regimes would accelerate their weapons of mass destruction, and within 5 years NKorea would become nuclear (happened) 5) The alliance will fail to successfully eliminate the Taliban as it distributes its focus fighting on 2 fronts, and would eventually be humiliated in Afghanistan (Happened) 6) Economically the US will be weakened and overcome by China, (Happened) 7) Russia under Putin would eventually have the strength to stretch its military muscle and attack at least 2 of its neighbors (Happened). Those were my major concerns before the invasion and sadly they all happened. Mr. Rasmussen enabled that by supporting the invasion of Iraq.

The truth to begin with apparently. I cannot understand how Rasmussen got away with pretending the Balkans (hart of Europe) didn't have a period of heavy military conflicts. Or that Spain, Portugal and Greece would have seen peaceful democracies in between the Second World War and the seventies? What about the Troubles in Northern Ireland? Or how the eastern side of Europe was physically separated from the west, preventing the free transport of almost all European people? Digging deeper, it would have been interesting to match this bold but utterly nonsensical statement with operation Gladio and Nato's secret war against the European liberties. How could this idiot claim that NATO would have managed peace and stability in Europe 'since the end of the second World War'? Especially at a time when European civil liberties are endangered because our own political leaders claim to be stranded in exactly the opposite of what Rasmussen is stating. How does 'peace and stability' rhyme with the constant thread of terrorist attacks? Perpetuated by people from nations that NATO-coalition forces never stopped fighting against? His 'peace and stability' statement sounds as credible as the one Theresa May had made when sensible arguments were lacking here...

Anders Fogh Rasmussen. I'm still puzzled as to how he was elected Prime Minister in the first place; or how he managed to become head of NATO after willfully misleading the Danish parliament about human rights violations in Afghanistan and the Danish population about the basis for the Iraq invasion. It's downright embarrassing, and a source of great distress to me that people of his caliber are or were ever considered representatives of the people of a still relatively sovereign nation.

US and NATO are like neighbours ganging up to encourage 2 cousins to fight. If NATO was disbanded after the cold war, there would not be this Russia-Ukraine war. US and NATO incur no loss.

I dont think N.A.T.O should have intervened in Libya at all, but there are key facts that Medhi is missing here. (I)Most Libyans themselves supported the air campaign. Polls showed that as many as 74% of Libyans supported N.A.T.O airstrikes against Gaddafi and 77% supported arming the rebels against Gaddafi. (II)N.A.T.O's job was simply to give air support to the rebels. Their job wasn't to govern the country afterwards. That was the failure on the part of the rebels

JANHOI MCCALLUM Nope they wanted a no fly zone, and thats what passed at the UN security council. Besides if "77% of the population supported arming rebels" plus the fact that NATO was bombing and providing intelligence, how did Gaddafi manage to stay for as long as he did?

+JANHOI MCCALLUM Failure on part of rebels? Seriously? That's what rebels do, man. They are rebels, they don't have the required experience or the expertise to manage complex systems on their own.

Take political correctness out of the picture and use some critical thinking. Gaddafi was poking the proverbial Western eye for years. He was insane but his mistake he wasn't ( US ) our madman! Hence, Libya is in chaos, ditto Iraq, ditto Syria, are these countries liberated, are the people happy? Do they love the United States and NATO?

Very lame. The moderator allowed Rasmussen keep lying about everything. And the panel had more people that shared Rasmussen's view than opposing, which makes a titled discussion! Rasmussen sounds like a greasy salesman to the military industrial complex, to whom NATO is a dealer. A curse to humanity.
