Red cabbage gives blue. Beetroot is pink. Use the juice. Together purple. Turmeric is dark yellow. Spirulina is dark green. Together bright green. Carbon is black. Cocoa is brown. All used as powder.

that a great idea.. but then do we need to add any kind of preservatives in it? wont it start to rot with time since it contains food like beetroot and cabbage

@@nabcabc3654 no you don't need preservatives in soap, pH is too high to rancidity

It doesn’t work for cold process soap like this. The ph gets to 14 so very few of those remain. Beet root 100% turns brown. I use it regularly for that. Not even close to red/pink. Spirulena usually fades on me. ☹️ Cocoa works well. So does coffee but it can bleed

If the soap gels the colors turn out much more vibrant. These soaps obviously did not gel. I do very much appreciate your video! I get more of a gray/purple when I use alkanet root, and I don't infuse the oil, I just add the powder right in

Thanks for sharing! I just started working with natural colorants. I posted a video using five different powdered herbs (black walnut haul, woad, comfrey leaf, safflower and madder root). It is nice to see the various shades we can get when we gel or not gel. I insulated my mold to have the soap gel.

The slower process of saponification with CP gives the indigo colour more time to develop. It wil get more blue then green over time as oxidation is an importat part of the dyeing process in the case of indigo. I'd add more indigo powder anyway, as I love the brisker colours. Alkanet fades over time; it changes from a deep purple to red-cabbage first, but may dissappear totally if not kept in the dark. HTH :)

I recently did a soap with Moroccan red clay. At first I was disappointed because it was more of a beige color. After about 2 weeks into the cure it darkened up a bit becoming more of an earthy red more reminiscent of the Moroccan red clay. . . Now I have a question about a not so common potential soap color. I found powdered ube. It is a purple potato much like the sweet potato. I was wondering if it would need an oil infusion then strained or if I could add it straight to my hot process? Thank you for all your wonderful videos! You are amazing!

Gelling is chemical process that makes soap "cook." Saponification (turning oils into soap) causes heat; the heat spreads throughout the soap. Put your soap in the oven to force gel or cover with towels and put on a heating pad. In a warm room, or in soaps w/ sugars added (milk/beer), gel is likely to happen on its own. If you don't want gel, put your soap into the freezer for 2hrs then overnight in the fridge. Give it a few days to thaw and reharden before you try to remove it from the mold.

@mellasone

thanks for the demo. The only colors that are actually pretty are the morocan clay and the madder root, all the others are just different shades of grey IMO, I would not advise the use of Indigo because lots of people have allergic reaction to it, I'm one of those people I get a terrible itch and redness when indigo touches my skin so beware.

I know you commented a long time ago, but I've watched other videos where people get much better, darker, vibrant colors out of adding the natural colorants at different stages, like into the lye water or infused into their olive oil before adding to the soap, instead of just dumping in the powder to already-made soap. Many of these would probably work the same way.

Alkanet root is rather disappointing. I've done an extensive test - see here (not allowed to place a link here so exchange the (dot) for a "." : mijnalbum(dot)nl/Album=NHB4VXDV) text is in Dutch, but I think you get the idea. It has all to do with the pH - needs to be high - as soon as the saponification process is done, you start losing colour. It fades almost completely if not kept in the dark. for a bright orange/yellow colour I like to use annato seed powder.

Probably because they were hand mixed at last. I've seen some soaps made with the same colourants having a much more even colour and more saturated, but probably those had the powders from the beginning of the mixing :)
