I'm also going to be setting it up a bit different than my past cages, and taking some inspiration from the more naturalistic German type cages. Instead of shoving it all into one video I decided to split it up into a series so I can go into a bit more detail. Here's part 2 :)

People over here in Europe often use a water based plastikote (the fast dry 'enamel' I believe, though it's more like a watery paint) to seal wooden items like ledges and wheels, may be worth looking into something like that so your wheel can have a long and sanitary life.

I love that trixie house for Luna. Food in 1 part, sleeps in another part and burrows underneath to use as a toilet. Makes spot cleaning so easy.i hope Gerg likes his. Also you can never have enough bendy bridges 😁🐹

My hamster’s 40 gal breeder is almost completely natural! The only thing keeping it from being 100% is the plastic wheel(which I am not trading out for wood). He seems to really enjoy all the wooden toys and bridges :)

i know i’m late, but i wanted to give you guys a tip for the wheels! i use a niteangel wheel that is like clear hard plastic with a simplistic wooden accent, (im pretty sure the wood accent is fake so it won’t get wrecked) and it goes so well with a natural themed enclosure! i also can’t get a wooden wheel for my hamster sunny, (he’s a dwarf) because he pees on his wheel.

You can mod podge the cork layer so if it ever get dirty, you can wipe it off. :)

Thank you so much for this!! I am in the process of building a natural-themed enclosure in a future Detolf cage, and I was stumped on ideas of what to get! I ADORE the Trixie products, thank you for showcasing them (I wanted to get the maze hide but I was scared a big Syrian like my own wouldn’t fit)

You can use contact paper on the cork surface to prevent a nasty wheel and make it easier to cleab

In the UK we use Plastikote (in the pot, not the spray can vers!) to waterproof wooden wheels

Loved this haul ! I had that wooden wheel with the cork but it was too stiff for my hamsters to run on so I gave it away 💕

Excited to see the set up! My hammy Maple wasn't a wheel pee-er for months and I was like woot! Then she randomly started and ugh.. it's annoying lol.

Hey! Just some advice about the wheel - you can coat it with liquid Plastikote and then it’ll be able to be wiped down! :)

My hamster had that wheel and starting ripping the cork off and there was glue that didn’t look safe for her so if he starts chewing it make sure to take it out :)

I had a natural set up detolf for my hamster but she chewed the metal bars so much that she chipped a tooth🙃 she’s in the living world eco habitat now and my male syrian is in the detolf. She still chews the wood on the eco habitat but I don’t really care because she’s not harming herself chewing wood as much. I can’t stand Carefresh bedding it’s so dry kaytee is my fave. I use oat hay, aspen and kaytee clean and cosy. I don’t use the oat hay as substrate really I just put it in her foraging area and she picks out the little oats from it as a foraging activity and it gives a pretty look to that area with natural textures I also had that Trixie hide my hamster loved it but she peed in it too much so I had to throw it out bc it stank lol

I LOVE Niteangel bendy bridges. I have a bunch of them. And I will be getting more when my baby gets upgraded from his 20 gal. (He is in a 20 g because he was kept in something even smaller before I got I'm and I don't want to stress him out. I also want to monitor him for the first week or so. He is getting a detolf very good)

Will you be sealing the edges in the Detolf with aquarium silicone (as its pet safe) to make it easier to clean? It'd also help prevent smaller substrate, like the sand, from becoming an issue in the future. If I remember correctly ErinsAnimals retired her Detolf when the seams warped and substrate started coming out.

I said that my hamster got healed from mites after I prayed for her. But what really happened is that she's never or rarely awake when I am so I didn't know she still had mites. So now I have to bring my male robo to the vet next week. So I'm treating two hamsters with Revolution. I'm keeping them in small bin cages until their treatment is over. I am bleaching her cage every other day for the next two weeks. Then see how they are doing? If u put Gerg in that cage while he has a few mites still you may end up having a mess on your hands. Hope he is free from mites soon.

If the full-time cage has the bare minimum size of 450 Square Inches, what is the bare minimum size of a travel cage?

Currently there’s actually no minimum size for a full time cage. HamsterHideout no longer endorses an official minimum but the members generally endorse a minimum of 600 square inches for a dwarf and 800 of a Syrian.

atropiical a travel cage, so not a full Time cage. They are only in there for a couple of weeks at most. (And I’d say probably about 200sqin, so a small cage you get at the store. [probably a plain one so you won’t need to throw out anything unsuitable])

thank you for saying that about playsand!! We probably have the same shitty playsand lmao, its probably river sand, it's grey, with sharp pieces and lots of clay...and it causes fumes during baking ew! It's exactly the same brand everyone uses from home depot too, quikrete, lol...So yeah, reptisand is exactly what I use too :)

I don’t have a hamster, but I like how you mentioned that the orchard grass works for you gerbils’ borrows because the regular CareFresh paper bedding I use can really hold a borrow. (P.S. Can you please make more gerbil care videos. ‘cause they’re aren’t many channels that make gerbils care vids - In English anyway.

I live in the uk 🇬🇧.. its funny because all of the natural items you want such as the wheel and the trixie hide are relatively cheap for us to buy, but any American products cost us an arm and a leg to get!

I wouldn´t recommend the Trixie House cause it´s tucked together with Nails. If your Hamster chews on it he could get hurt.

I have a question so I have a pine cone tree and I was wondering if I get it off from the tree directly would it still be safe for my hamster

I believe you have to sterilize them first. A few other pet KZfaqrs have mentioned using pinecones in their habitats.

Yeah clean them let them dry for a day or two then bake them for a bit to completely kill all the bugs and sanitize them

As long as you have done your research and are prepared to give them the proper sized enclosure, correct diet, and time, you should be okay.
