NATURAL HAMSTER CAGE PART 3 | SETTING UP THE CAGE

After owning hamsters for over 7 years I decided it is finally time to try out an Ikea Detolf cage! I'm also going to be setting it up a bit different than my past cages, and taking some inspiration from the more naturalistic German type cages. Instead of shoving it all into one video I decided to split it up into a series so I can go into a bit more detail. Here's part 3 :)

Suggestion for the sand,I used a large clear decorative bowl(floating candles kind)then you can put other substrates around it and you won’t have such fine sand creeping under the silicone/plastic pieces of the detolf.

She mentioned in the video that a lot of people have already mentioned that she should use plastikote but unfortunately, plastikote is not sold, here, in the U.S. (´;︵;`) . . . so we really don't have anything for that.

it was definitely a good idea to create a lid. i have a syrian hamster who lives in a detolf and i only used the glass shelves as a partial lid and he ended up escaping. thank goodness i found him though.

ModPodge could work for your hamster wheel. ModPodge is animal (child) safe and water resistant. Not waterproof, but it should help. It is just a glue, better than Elmers, but similar. It is used to put a protective seal on top of childrens' crafts, like artwork or wooden sculptures.

Lydia Eddins I was thinking that but I’ve put mod podge on some craft things before and it has left left a sticky residue on stuff. I’m interested in it for my animals but I wouldn’t want their feet to get stuck in it or smt? Does anyone else have this problem or did I just buy a weird one🤔
@lydiaeddins2083

@@christinakenward8208 If I let it dry out for a long time (like a day or two), I don't get the sticky feeling. It drys to the touch very quickly, but takes longer to fully dry and harden. Also, if it is submerged in water, it can get sticky. But, who knows, different climates can effect craft supplies differently...that could also be why?

Hi, I love how you are doing a natural themed cage this time. Detolfs provide a TON of space. Yay! I absolutely adore the fact that you included multiple types of substrates for further enrichment for your little dwarf hamster. I also love that you have a cork-lined wooden wheel. I seal wooden wheels with polycrylic. It's nontoxic AFTER it has dried (coat OUTSIDE).

@no-nq8dj
@no-nq8dj 5 жыл бұрын
Charl yeah, if there’s gaps in the bridge- some people don’t look at them before putting them in resulting in their hamsters getting stuck- then they say it’s the bendy bridges.
@charl366
@charl366 5 жыл бұрын
st3llar the gaps can appear over time, the reason it’s unsafe when on its side it’s because the hamster bears weight down and has leg trapped usually from above, the gaps aren’t a issue when the bridge is used the “normal way”

I bought it the other day and set it all up today it was a pain to fit it in my room but now that’s it’s done it’s absolutely amazing my hamster loves it since she is a Syrian hamster she is called bopsy and she’s about 1 or 2 years old now so she’s pretty old now but I used soft herring and sawdust and also made a sand bathe area and I also suggest putting the sand in some kind of container just so it doesn’t get stuck in the plastic of the detolf (just a suggestion)

I recently learnt that it's dangerous to use bendy bridges as dividers without something covering the slits inbetween them, like miss glued on or just glue. So even though I know you haven't got a hamster and probably won't for a little while because of covid it might be worth knowing!

Hello, I’m new to your channel! I really love your videos, and all of your habitats for your hamsters. For the wooden wheel, you can use non toxic glue or mod podge and put a thick layer on it, self- adhesive liners and stick them on, or non toxic plastikote, but you have to get the varnish type not the automotive type. You can find all of these either at Walmart or Home Depot.

I have 2 robos with mites & they are both in small bin cages with wodent wheel and bare necessities. I have them on shredded newspaper & Carefresh under their houses. they are on revolution & I clean the cage every day or every other day. they seem content in their new cages which I'm very surprised. I'm using bleach and take the wheels apart each cleaning. maybe that's not necessary? what is your vet having u do? how often & wondering if your using bleach. of course completely gone before adding bedding

@malicahamilton
@malicahamilton 5 жыл бұрын
Yumi Tokushige you could leave your hamster in a cage like this for 1 - 3 months depending on the hamster. You should do daily spot cleans to help maintain the cage. After a few weeks you could maybe replace certain parts of the bedding etc but in a small cage every 2 weeks is when you should clean it
