To survive in the oceans, marine organisms have had to adapt in a number of weird and wonderful ways. Many alter their anatomy, behaviours and physiologies in order to cope with the challenges they face. Methods such as changing colour, developing stingers, or migrating long distances can help them stay hidden from predators, find a mate or access food. But some animals have taken a different approach to survival. Rather than evolve these complex characteristics for themselves, they instead simply disguise themselves, altering their colouration or anatomy not to serve a function, but in order to resemble another organism. In this film, we’ll explore the different kinds of mimicry, and take a look at how survival through deception can be a key to life in the oceans.
00:00 - An Introduction to Mimicry
01:38 - Chapter 1: Batesian Mimicry - Survival Through Deception

Everytime I wanna escape my unforgiving, worldly anxiety or stress, I watch your videos of the deep sea or other videos of outer space (our universe). The eerie vastness yet hauntingly beautiful complexity of it all somehow helps alleviate what troubles me.

Agreed. I appreciate the beauty of the deep sea and the necessity of protecting the life there... but actually personally going there even if it's in the world's toughest submarine? Screw that, I like it up here where it's sunny and warm and _not_ potentially hiding gigantic abyssal monstrosities.

Thank you Lorrie, I really appreciate that. These last few months have been hard for me, but during them, I've found immense comfort from your videos. Your voice is very soothing, and it's like the rest of what's going on gets to melt away for 15-20 minutes at a time. I can focus in on a topic I love (nature/science/discovery) and just relax. Thank you for making these, for so many reasons. I'd also like to thank you for taking the time to be one of the few sources of science/nature-based content (that I've come across! I'm sure there's more out there but it can be difficult to find it. .__. ) that makes a point to not try to force it to be exciting. It is exciting on it's own! The natural world, exploration of it, and the incredible things which live near us are amazing. I feel absolute wonder when learning about them.

Thanks Grey, that really means a lot to me. I must ask, and as you mentioned, why do some animals convergently evolve other traits, while these ones mimic the traits instead? Why? Has science been able to answer, or at least provide a theory as to why?
@NaturalWorldFacts
@NaturalWorldFacts 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Convergent evolution arises due to two distinct species in distinct locations evolving similar traits in response to similar conditions. Mimicry occurs in a species as a direct result of another species found nearby. It isn’t necessarily evolving to occupy the same niche or due to the same conditions, but instead due to the advantages of physically resembling another species with traits that help it deter predators etc.
@patriciar2946
@patriciar2946 2 жыл бұрын
Does energy conservation factor at all into mimicry? I watched your other video on deep sea gigantism and the theories surrounding it, and am wondering if it’s “easier” on an organism living that deep to visually mimic another animal than it is to evolve other advantages. Like taking the path of least resistance.
@metholuscaedes6794
@metholuscaedes6794 2 жыл бұрын
it is probably far simpler to aquire traits related to your appearance, than that of complicated defensive measures. While they essentialy give the same advantage under the right cirumstances. The path of least resistance would apply.

once again Leo, you give us another chapter in the deep sea ecosystem and the fauna that uses everything at their means. I have known about frog fish and Scorpion fish for some time and frog fish truly are weird and wonderful unless your a fish. Fastest mouth in the ocean besides the large predatory Pipe fish. They can suck up several fish at a time. Again truly horrifying if you're a fish. I loved your hands on video when you explored the shallow tidal pools. I found it interesting to see you getting your hands dirty, so to speak. Keep them coming :-D

I was hooked instantly... your voice is perfect.... I watched one via autoplay, and went to your channel, hoping it had more content... Did a happy dance in my head, then I read the bio and I can't believe you're so young! You should be so proud. I'm so sick of stupid tiktok videos drowning out the content I would want to see... and I'm sorry, but nature and science programmes, they always sound more mystical, if it's a British narrator, slow, steady voice, unobtrusive, yet sneakily filling heads with knowledge. There are some great ones with other accents, but I think it's basically because I was raised on Sir David Attenborough, who dominated the natural world documentaries. They're VERY hard to find now. Love Island? TOWIE??? Might as well just shove marshmallows in their heads. I wish I knew what the hell I was doing with even THIS app, I'm 47 lol, I'm a massive fan of PCs... But there isn't enough of this kind of content and KZfaq is just silly videos on tik tok... the thirst for knowledge is being lost... We are told what to do by apps and we aren't left wondering... . I loved The Planets. The guy who voiced that, I've listened to him a lot..... Bring back education, not fill heads with even more nonsense about what some celebrity did that day... Big thumbs up. Liking and subscribed. And I think your channel would be perfect for my friends autistic son, who us fascinated with "monsters" ❤
