Locate, track and kill submarines-that’s the job of an AWO. Naval Aircrewman Operators are the ultimate defense against the threats from the deep. Using radar, sonar and a lot more that we can’t talk about, you’ll be the first to hear the menacing “ping” from a sub and the first to make that sound disappear. You are always watching carefully, playing mind games with your opponent to predict their every move. Find out if you have the eyes and ears for this job at bit.ly/2Bv7t3r.

I did this job for 8 years. Please, tell about the long deployments, unwelcoming parties where deployed, hours of boredom while on track, illness from sleep deprivation, 18 hour work shifts, duty weekends (every other weekend), etc. To be sure, I have ZERO regrets. I have but one request. Please... do not glamorize. It’s an insult.

Don't know where you deployed to or what platform you flew from. If it was a carrier, then yes you probably did work your but off. To me, the P-3 Navy was the Cadillac navy. Home every day except when on deployment. Most deployment flights involved finding and tracking Soviet submarines (1980's). Beer debrief after the official post flight debrief. Ground job centered around classroom training with the occasional working party to build sonobuoys. I never had any issues related to the locals in my deployments sites on both coasts. I deployed to Iceland x 2, Sicily x 2, Misawa x 2, Okinawa x 2, Adak x 1 with dets to Diego Garcia, Oman, Crete, Azores, Gitmo. Sure there were days I said why did I ever sign up for this but overall this was the best job I ever had for 26 years.

@@stephensanchez3982 I agree. I was an IFO on P-3C''s - VP-10 Red Lancers from 1990-1995. Made 3 deployments; Sig, Puerto Rico, Sig. Best 5 years of my life. Stayed on the same CAC the entire time. I don't know what in the hell D K is griping about. Being an Aircrewman in the Navy is one of the best enlisted jobs there is. My friend (also an AO) retired as a Master Chief w/ 30 years in - never stepped foot on a ship lol.

@D K Your insane. Best 5 years of my life was being a Naval Aircrewman on P-3C's. Overall it was a skate job compared to being a ground pounder. Got to fly all over the world while making 3 deployments. Best deployment was to Puerto Rico. Barracks were a 24/7 party & plenty of things to do on base. I tell everyone that is thinking of joining the Navy - that one of the best enlisted jobs is being an Aircrewman. My uniform for 5 years was a flight suit. Flew during Desert Storm, Operation Deny Flight, Operation Sharp Guard, flying over Bosnia to help liberate they former Yugoslavia, got to go to SERE school which was awesome, etc etc. Not sure what you did but everyone I know of that was an Aircrewman to this day loved it and thought how lucky they were to fly on board P-3C's instead of being stationed on a ship or some lame NAS like Millington, TN.

The enlisted are the sensor operators, the officers are the pilots and tactical coordinator. There is a mission profile that involves flight and a tactical situation. The P-8 does work with two pilots and maybe relief and about fives mission crew....this aircraft with two high bypass turbo fan engines and crew of about seven does the work and mission that took about a dozen in the P-3. With four turboprop engines.....three if it was a ultra long mission profile which can shut down...(intentionally) one in flight and feather the props to save fuel.

Currently the maximum age for enlisted (maybe officers too, although aviation officers have a lower maximum age limit) is 39. Age 39 might be a stretch for a lot of people choosing the AW rate, as they'd have to go through Naval Aircrewman Candidate School which has somewhat rigorous physical conditioning requirements - minimum swimming ability, obstacle course, running. Then of course there's SERE training, which might actually be easier on older people who've had more time to mature. (Or it could be that SERE is more difficult on older students. I was 23 when I went through it.) This is all based on my experience from... well, from too long ago. And of course there's a minimum age, typically 18, or 17 with a parent's permission.
