Charles the Second was the first King after Oliver Cromwell served as “Lord Protector”. Cromwell was a strict Puritan and banned all forms of frivolity, including Christmas and parties. Hence, “the king who brought back partying” 🎉

Dick Turpin is important because in the UK he became something of a folk hero after his execution when his life became seen as glamorous and romantic and mythologized through books and poems. hence why the song tries to dispel that myth, showing he was really a violent killer 😳

“why do you need to know all the monarchs’ names?” why do yous US americans need to know all the presidents? 😐 edit bc apparently people are still salty 10 months later: my point was less “every USian knows all the presidents of the USA so of course every Brit knows all the English monarchs” and more “most British people still don’t know all the monarchs’ names, but there is a song in case people do want to learn them, in the same way that there are things to help people learn all the presidents of the USA if they so wish.”

It isn’t boring or a period-drama type musical. It is ONLY the 6 wives (no ensemble), and they each have a song in the style of a contemporary artist, and it’s very clever. The new cast are good. Just that they are a slight downgrade from the phonominal team of actors/writers/musicians/theatre kids we were used to. They wrote a lot of the stuff and generally enjoyed it. At least Simon and Jim stayed on for one or two more seasons, tho nine year old me screamed when it changed to 'Chatty Deaths', it didnt roll of the tongue like stupid did. I think maybe devoting whole episodes to certain people and Themes weren't nearly as enjoyable too. If you more of the group as a whole there are yonderland(now tv entertainment), Bill (amazon prime) and Ghosts (BBC I-player).

It resurfaced after George Floyd's death? I had no clue. But what annoys me about the Rosa Parks song and tbh Rosa Parks in general is everyone acts like she was the first black woman to stay on the bus in the face of white discrimination. She wasn't. Claudette Colvin did the same 9 months ago, at age 15, in the same city, and was jailed. But Claudette got little to no recognition, not nearly as much as Rosa did as she was a lot darker skinned than Rosa and also pregnant so it caused some issues at the time. It would just be nice for Claudette to be recognised, esp by horrible histories

As a british person who grew up in the 2010's, these songs hit me with so much nostalgia. I'm now 13, I haven't watched cbbc in years but my 8 yo sister still watches Horrible Histories and cbbc in general, I was mildly excited to walk into my living room to find the TV left of and the new series playing. History is still one of my favourite subjects for sure. As for the 'King who brought back partying', Cromwell banned any form of fun, as he was a strict protestant known as a Puritan. So when Charles was put on the throne, he brought back fun and he enjoyed to party. I also feel weird realising I know all the lyrics to the Monarch Song. It's definitely the most iconic HH song to me. 100% a classic.

Fun fact about Horrible Histories, it won an award for the best comedy show in the UK, not an award for best children's show, best comedy show period. The BBC also put Horrible Histories on a later time slot because adults liked to watch it as well, so they made it so that people working regular hours could make it back home to catch the show.

Dick Turpin was an English highwayman who lived during the Georgian period. He was executed at York castle, on the 7th April 1739, after being convicted on two counts of horse theft. He was killed by hanging, and you can actually visit his cell and the rest of York castle.
