This week’s Urban Valor episode features Navy SEAL veteran, Mike O’Dowd. Mike was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He was inspired to be a Navy SEAL after watching a documentary on the Discovery channel about them. When the 9/11 attack occurred, Mike felt an even greater calling to go fight for America and enlisted into the Navy to become a Navy SEAL.
In this episode, he talks about his combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan assigned to SEAL Team 7, doing covert operations to capture targets while they slept, and working with locals who were police allies by day and enemy by night. Mike leaves us with the hardship of lost brothers and the impact transitioning back into the civilian world had on his mental health.
👍 Remember to LIKE this video if you found it informative, enjoyable, or just to show your support to Mike and/or us at Urban Valor.

I’m a retired SEAL. I was formally taught even before the war never to threaten something that you don’t have either the authority or the will to do. Once they call you on it, you’re powerless. They know your limits, and you’re not getting any more out of them. I use the same principle in the civilian world. I never tell employees to do something I don’t have the authority to compel(I ask) and I never threaten firings or suspensions unless that employee is repeatedly bad and I’ve got their replacement on hand.

@@tommygun5038 Meh, there are always some surprises, especially when you’re in a new country. For instance, my experiences with Iraqis were much better than my experiences with Afghans. I worked in a liquor store owned by Iraqis. The owner was a very gentle, quiet man. One of the gentlest people I ever knew actually... He also had a slighly depressed demeanor about him - like he was always going thru some unseen pain. His social awareness was very sharp. Like a mind reader almost. One day, he could sense my curiosity about his time in Iraq under Western occupation (although I had no intention of ever asking him about it) In his broken English, all he said was "it is indescribable" BUT it was the way he said it. The vibe. The tone of voice... facial expression...slouched shoulders... It was eerie and it was heart-breaking to hear him say that. I don't think many of us can imagine what the average civilian goes thru in war We like to think it's Soldiers Vs. Soldiers but I'm pretty sure it's always the innocent civilians who suffer most!!!

There were some older guys that even served since the 80s during the Iran-Iraq War and the Gulf War in the 90s (in reference to Iraqi soldiers in 2003 im assuming). Afghanistan is hardened because of their nature. They aren’t just some civilized country they are barley even a nation. It’s more of a region with various disconnected tribes. If they're German, machine guns will fire back with pin point accuracy. If they're American, nothing will happen for 15 minutes and you'll then be bombed from ships in the seas 300 miles away.

Not even close. I love the "Wrong side of history" argument like it has ilany validity. The only things people remember about any of the middle east is that it's soaked in blood, always has been a ndalways will be. You can't even go into individual villages there and ask them to tell you their history from 200 years ago. The history of the middle east is that people fight and die there. We're some mistakes made? Yeah, but guess what that's life and it happens regardless.

For everyone hating on this soldier, as a Muslim and an Arab myself, it brings pain to my heart hearing his testimony, however, he was hired to do a job and it is nothing personal at the end of the day. What he is describing is the difference between a group of people who were brainwashed with the idea of nationality (ie iraq, etc) and a people who identify with their origin, which wasn't given to them by colonizers (ie afghan). The afghans he is describing did not obey the man-made government of Afghanistan. Rather, they obey what their forefathers obey, the Quran! To be clear, I am not promoting any political movement. Rather, I admire the different experiences that this soldier shared regarding the two groups who identify with the same faith!

That’s his experience encountering certain people as for nothing to do with the conflict that’s debatable seeing as how in 1993 they planned to have the US President Bush and the Emir of Kuwait leader be killed by car bomb but was stopped 16 people arrested two Iraqi nationals in charge or the funding to Terriost organizations and money to suicide bombers and had multiple groups of Terriost/Extremists groups although Al Queda was in contact with Iraq it wasn’t 100% confirmed they were working there so some standards weren’t met I’ll admit Iraq was very very close to the area and then after the War had Terriost and it became a different story even before that there was the Desert Storm war by way of invasion of Kuwait and coalition
