The fact that U.S. Navy SEALs endure very rigorous training before entering the field is common knowledge, but just what happens at those facilities is less often discussed. In this video, former SEALs Brent Gleeson, David Goggins, and Eric Greitens (as well as authors Jesse Itzler and Jamie Wheal) talk about how the 18-month program is designed to build elite, disciplined operatives with immense mental toughness and resilience.
Wheal dives into the cutting-edge technology and science that the navy uses to prepare these individuals. Itzler shares his experience meeting and briefly living with Goggins (who was also an Army Ranger) and the things he learned about pushing past perceived limits.
Goggins dives into why you should leave your comfort zone, introduces the 40 percent rule, and explains why the biggest battle we all face is the one in our own minds. "Usually whatever's in front of you isn't as big as you make it out to be," says the SEAL turned motivational speaker. "We start to make these very small things enormous because we allow our minds to take control and go away from us. We have to regain control of our mind."

BRENT GLEESON: SEAL training is 18 months long. We talk about discipline, we talk about trust, accountability, mental fortitude. Very, very high attrition rate. For my class only about 10 percent ultimately graduated of the original class. But the first six months of that 18 month training pipeline is called BUDS, which stands for Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL. And the first three weeks of BUDS are leading up the Hell Week. And those three weeks are no joke either. They're just as bad as Hell Week, but you get to sleep a couple of hours a night. But then Hell Week is where you're going to weed out the rest of your class. By the end of Hell Week 80 percent of your class is gone. Hell Week starts on a Sunday, ends on a Friday afternoon, and the great thing about that Sunday is the class will report to one of the main classrooms with only a couple required items in their possession and we don't allow them to know when Hell Week will commence, when breakout starts. And it's pure chaos. Guys will quit minutes into breakout. And so the anguish, the anxiety is just killing you. It's a fascinating thing to watch. Not a fascinating thing to be a part of. So that afternoon our class leader, who's the highest ranking officer in the class, he read us - one of the things he did to motivate us was to read us the speech, the St. Crispin's Day speech from William Shakespeare's Henry V. And a great excerpt that many people know from that speech is, ""We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother.""
ERIC GREITENS: If there was a single question that you can ask someone to measure how resilient they're going to be, you ask them what are you responsible for. And what you find is that even in the most difficult situations when you look at stories of people who have been prisoners of war, for example. People who survive said I'm going to take control of my thoughts, or I'm going to take control of the way that I breathe. There are certain things even though my freedom has been taken away from me that my ability to eat where I live. All of these things have been taken away from me. I'm still going to control something. And when you focus on actually taking control of something and what happens is your circle of control begins to widen and people begin to see that even in the face of hardship and difficulty, there's a way for them to build power and live a purposeful life.
DAVID GOGGINS: People always ask me how do you build mental toughness. Mental toughness also has these classes out here. A class on mental toughness. Positive thinking, visualization, all these different techniques-mental toughness is a lifestyle. It's something that you live every single day of your life. When I was growing up I was a lazy kid. I was a lazy kid and everyone goes how did you get to where you're at today? How did you get to where you're running 200 miles at one time in 39 hours being so disciplined. It started off honestly with recognizing that my bedroom was dirty. My bed wasn't made. I lived a sloppy life. So I took very small increments in my life. I started making my bed. I started cleaning my room. I started doing things, coming outside of my lazy ways to become better. And through a period of time your brain doesn't like it, but it starts to realize this is a new way of thinking...

Is stupid to break your muscles and bones. I did that younger and recuperation time makes you lost a lot mentally and physically. Do you best but always with a certified trainer advice. And dont do that you may lost conciousness and even die. I have seriuos doubt that that fat black guy is the same as the one taking.

I remember on military training, my mate can only do 10 push ups.. The instructor said that he can't leave until he do 200, he can take rest as long as he want.. He said it's impossible but the instructor encouraged him.. He ended up doing it in one hour..

Not everyone can go to navy seal training but everyone can consciously create challenges in their own life to help them grow. The resistance of challenge is needed for you to develop inner strength and essentially conquer yourself.

I love David's perspective. When the pain shows up, that's when the growth can happen. He mentioned once that when you really start to feel uncomfortable, that's when you find out who you really are. It's akin to the old Rocky scene, right? "It's not about how hard you can hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."

A really good book is “The mans Search for Meaning” by Victor Frankl. Its a memoir of a psychologist that endures the Nazi camps. He talks about how men would cope and find meaning in their horrible existence. Just like the man in the vid said, the people who live/succeed seem to take control of the only thing they can, themselves.

i was going for a pb on my situps the other day and at 50 it burns, but i just kept pushing and achived 300. Im only 16 and im gonna give it my all to be a seal someday hopefully, but the body is capable of alot more than you would think. the hard part is having the mental strength to push. im trying to learn it

I think discipline is a fallacy. That word subscribes to the idea that one has to do 'good' things to have certain things in life. I think building habits is crucial, as the video says do uncomfortable things on regular basis to help your brain growth, friction in life trains you to start thinking responsibly. We will make mistakes, we will make bad decisions but ultimately we will train ourselves to get in a habit to making the right one that is good for us.

What drives me to keep running when I start feeling sore is that I know eventually I will hit a sweetspot where I am so tierd that I no longer will feel my legs, I just know Im moving forward. It is a very wierd out of body expirience, and you probably need some cardio training so you can achieve that without being unproductive, but its like finding ultimate peace. Everything just goes by and you feel not a thing, in a good way.

i don’t run much but i’ve noticed this feeling, i was going for a 10 minute mile on the treadmill and i was struggling up to the 4 minute mark until my breathing and step pattern just clicked and became one. suddenly i wasn’t struggling and i was just floating on the treadmill. breathing constantly in and out through my nose at a decently fast pace really helps with energy and keeping myself fuelled.

The first question I would ask is why you want to develop a warrior mindset. What does that mean to you? What is a warrior? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “warrior” comes from Middle English: “from Old Northern French werreior, variant of Old French guerreior, from guerreier ‘make war’, from guerre ‘war’.” A warrior was one engaged in a war. In more modern times, a warrior is seen as someone who fights, but usually for a non-physical cause such as an ideology or philosophy. For example, I am a warrior for the Second Amendment but that doesn’t mean I’m engaged in physical combat. It’s more of a mental state.

Man does about 16 pullups. He is toast. Can barely lift his arms. That's all David, I cannot do even one more pullup. David then says "Ok we're not leaving here until you do 100 more." I felt that.

On one hand, I appreciate many of the things said here. Having such a mindset is a thing that can get you past goals you didn't think you'd ever pass. A certain amount of this is very helpful. With that said, there are times and places to switch on that mindset, to use it effectively. Running until you damage your kidneys and break small bones in your feet is harmful in more ways than physical. It sounds like a problem. Mental toughness is a poweful thing, and a great thing to cultivate, but there is also something to be said for rationality, for not self-destructing for no good reason, so you can "live to fight another day" as they say. While I think we could use more mental toughness, more discomfort in our daily lives to keep us growing, there is a point past which there are fast diminishing returns. For example, I could probably technically push through more pushups than I think I can on an average day, until I can't lift my arms. I could run a marathon until I damage my kidneys, for no real reason; not for survival, just to prove to someone else how tough I am to push through the pain. Or, I could train in a way that pushes my limits and builds that same mental toughness, and not damage what I came to build up, slowing my progress toward the goal. It won't be as flashy as breaking myself to prove it to everyone else, so I won't end up bragging about it anywhere, but I'll have the same fortitude.

Most people will have no ability to comprehend the mindset a SEAL has. Most cannot understand the strength a recruit choosen for buds has...who ultimately fails. All of that doesn't matter. All that matters is that in our day to day life we ask a few more questions about tough topics, we push ourselves a little more (demanding the best for ourselves) and we move towards and through our own issues (never running away). That is all we need to do.

Lol totally not the same thing. Physjcal training rrquires pain. Studying does not. You can seriously get injured or die from physical activity. Theres a biy of a difference in challlenge to the mind and body.

Most people can achieve good results when they make efforts involving physical body: sports, body building, being a seal... and especially you have no obligations to others. The real challenge comes when you have to work to support your family, when you have to pay salaries, when you are alone to light the right path..., pay your house mortgage, ....

My mind, My body and my Spirit became one when I woke up this afternoon.. It feels great to see the breeze of air hit at you and see the leaves waving, gazing at it calmly . It feels great.. This is the first time I experienced it.. I didn't touch my phone when I woke up, I just head outside and see through anything while my mind is relaxed and calm.. I felt peace.. It feels really good

I was in military school when i was 14 years old.. its Malaysian Royal Military College. The training, omg. I have to do 1000 push up a day and run 2.4km x 3 on evening! throughout the first junior year. Then after a while i see the corporal that train me, their stomach pretty bubble-like. I think when im at school back then my training is as hard as SEAL lol. Im 30 years old now, i like my body shame. Never regret. I love it.

I just wanted to add something, a quote my psychiatrist told me when ı was batteling with anxiety and depression my question was Thoughts are coming to my mind whic I defined as bad how can I control them and he said “you just cant control your thoughts brain is that complex of a structure it is what it is but what you can do is learn how to shift your focus either on your body or an outside variable to get a reset” then he suggested a practice called mindfullness I never studied it enough because I literally dont have any book reading habits and the depression was pressing high at the time. Hope that helps to some people.

All special forces units are designed to respond to certain threats, none of them are "better" then the others, only some have gotten more public awareness then others. If you tried to send Seals out to do a Green Beret job, they would fail fantastically because it's not what they are trained for.

If there is one thing you absolutely have to take away from this video is that: you have to live it, or you have to practice whatever self improvement goal you have. There are many good ideas in this video, and they sound very profound. But if you merely got super hyped up, got super pumped up, then you haven't gotten much from this video. Personally, I love a profound idea for self improvement, but I don't really practice them day in day out. So I usually end up just collecting profound ideas but don't see anything improving in my life. But about three months ago, I decided to choose just 4 self improvement goals, and practice them as much as possible. Even though the practices haven't been perfect, but boy oh boy, I saw myself improved noticeably. And it feels great, it feels way better than getting pumped by bunch profound motivating quotes. Stop collecting great ideas merely for the sake of enjoying their profoundness, time to practice, time to sweat, time to live them.

The part where Greitens quotes Hemingway bothers me. GREITENS: Everybody has to deal with hardship. Everybody has to deal with struggle and there's this great quotation from Hemmingway. "The world is a hard place," he said. "And the world breaks everyone," he said. "And many are strong at the broken places." Now people often remember this phrase strong at the broken places but it's also important to remember his qualifier - many. Not all are strong at the broken places. And some people when they confront hardship actually end up in a place where they're helpless. Some people are broken by suffering. Some people are actually really hurt by pain in such a way that they can't move forward. But it's also the case that some people deal with hardship and become heroic. I am NOT the type who is strong at the broken places. I am the type who is hurt by pain in such a way that I can’t move forward. That means none of what they’re talking about here can help me. What’s someone like me supposed to do?

I am actually doing a lot of floats. I’m actually in the midst of trying to do when a day for 30 days.. I’ve been waiting to learn Mandarin for a several years and I dabble but due to some traumatic events, I have stalled. I am very motivated at this point in jumping in to learning Mandarin. So it’s synchronistic that I watch this video.. can you advise me put me in the direction where I can use mind GYM with or without floats please please please thank you so much this video by the way is just amazing just amazing. So motivated to get off my butt and go thank you for it. I watched it several times. David Goggins is an amazing human being. Has so much to teach the world.

Yeah, because everyone knows we want a society filled with weak-willed, instant gratification and the will the quit when times are tough. (This is sarcasm, by the way.) A warrior mindset (strength, resilience, ego-death, teamwork) can be utilized even in a peaceful society. I'd posit that it is most useful to a peace loving society. The will to use violence *if necessary* does not mean that one *wants to*.

pretty hilarious, if one realises that just 100 years ago in 1st world countries, 50 years ago in 2nd world countries, right now in 3rd world countries, getting up to do your bed and "workout"/run was definitely not possible - people got up to wash and get as much grub as they had/could and then run to work in the field or in the factory for 10-12 hours. that's a hellish week every single week.

I ended up hating swimming, but I did it all the same and guess what, I pushed to 160 lanes in two hours non stop. I don't want to brag I'm not a fast swimmer I just like to feel the pain and exhaustion.

Agreed. Self-transcendence is a logical fallacy. Nothing can be causa sui. That is, nothing can cause itself. Everything, including people, are products of external things that precede its existence - genetics and environment/nature and nurture. The capacity for change and decision making was inherited.

@@My2cents. It is thought in some circles (those who follow the channelling of Kryon) that we are all divine, so that here on earth we are angels in disguise as humans. People are only beginning to learn to get access (possibly through multiple dimensions, or possibly through Shamanic States of Consciousness to the angel in ourselves. In addition to that "higher self", we have guides who stick around and offer suggestions, as well as family members from other lifetimes. In short, an entourage.
