The difference? When the Navy trains you in BUD/s it’s training a RAW sailor with zero combat training and experience.. Marines that join MARSOC already have a baseline of infantry skills and some of them combat experienced. Hell in Marine Boot camp they already have learned patrolling, ambushes and fire and maneuver tactics. By the time they reach MARSOC they have this. BUD/s attrition rate is so high because of the lack of prior skill and hard training which Marines already get in Boot Camp.

@@Nasty_J I did not compare BUDs to Marine Boot Camp. What I said was their is a big difference between Marines that make MARSOC training and Sailors who go through BUDs. They are completely Raw.. Part of reason why the attrition is so high. Marines learn combat skills and basic Infantry in Boot Camp. I should know because I went through it. Then Infantry school. Many of these Raiders have combat experience before they even attend selection. Huge difference.

We trained with both SEALs and Raiders when they came through MWTC up in Bridgeport, CA. They are definitely fun to be around. I was always jealous because they'd have the ability to grow their facial hair out and when you're stationed in a place that snows more than half of the year and gets down to 20 below sometimes, having a clean-shaven face is straight up torture.

You can't join straight into MARSOC, don't even think you can go straight into Recon. You have to be in for a couple years first. Then you can go recon, you have to be chosen to go MARSOC
@codymitchell4994
@codymitchell4994 3 жыл бұрын
Both those are wrong. If your goal is MARSOC then don’t go infantry. It sounds like a good idea but you’re not an asset to them just cause you can disassemble a weapon or shoot well. It’s all taught there and everyone will learn it. Choose a job that will give you value to the teams. Also you don’t need to go recon to be selected. You just talk to a MARSOC recruiter and they will schedule you to see if you qualify to take the nexts steps to go through their process. All before this you may hate your enlistment and want to EAS already so good luck.
@codymitchell4994

I forgot to mention if you do want to go recon you may have the opportunity to sign the contract before boot camp if you score a high enough GT score and can also possibly get an opportunity to volunteer at SOI before the split.

As a former 0331, 0321 and 7523…yes enlisted to officer. While a 0321 I enjoyed my time with RECON in the late 80’ and early 90’s. Spent most of my time in the jungles of Panama and Columbia. Each has specific missions. Some are better equipped and better staffed with experience. Recon has been around a long time. Out of respect to the WWII Raiders, I just wish I could have earned the honor and title of Raider. SEALS are good at what they do also. Worked closely with them in many AOR’s. Worked together and working together we were ALL unstoppable. SEMPER FIDELIS. Ironically, I finished my career as it started, back on the ground with infantry as a Marine FAC. AOR’s included Central America, 1st Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo, East Timor, Horn of Africa (HOA), Afghanistan and Iraq. Not many get the honor of going from Grunt to F/A-18 Pilot, but it can be done and the USMC gave me that opportunity. God Bless ALL our pointed spear war fighters!

Got an update on the marsoc pipeline: after ITC they attend language training, jump school, free fall, and have a 50/50 shot of going to combatant dive school. People seem to think Raiders have the shortest pipeline but if you take all the secondary schools and at least 3 years big marine corps it’s actually the longest process to become an operator

Marine Corps Commandant PX Kelly, made it a point in 1987,to keep Force Recon out of SOCOM because the Corps didn't like the idea of "Marines not working for Marines" meaning they didn't want a situation where Force Recon not being at the desposal of a MAGTAF or MEF commander because some special operations command officer (Likely a Green Beret,Ranger, or SEAL) had a higher priority mission at hand. The next Commandant,Al Grey, pushed the idea of the MEUSOC being the Corps contribution, but SOCOM wasn't feeling that.

I believe the same orders by FDR to form a US version of the UK's Commandos,resulted in the formation of the Army Rangers along with the Marine Raiders. At first, the Army,Navy, and Marine Corps, all sent volunteers to a camp to train together as a commando force, but the parent services quickly changed their minds and pulled their guys back to units within their home service. The OSS continued to recruit from all branches.

In the 1980s there was Marine Battalion Recon and Marine Force Recon - assume your talking about them - MARSOC (Raiders) started up in 2006 after being disbanded at the end of WWII - at that time somebody high up didn't politically see the need to keep them active and training anymore

Fyi, the early MARSOC units were stood up with Force Recon and Recon Marines. It pretty much decimated Force Recon but it has since been rebuilt. One other tidbit that is kind of interesting is that just after WWII when the navy decided they wanted to start their own specialized water born soldier cadre (the beginnings of the SEALs), they asked the WWII Marine Raiders to set the initial diving component up as they were considered the subject matter experts of the time. Semper Fi (a U.S. Recon Marine vet,).

Sorry but you history is a little bit muddle. SEALs were born out of the UDT forces that served in WW2. UDT that formed and served in WW2 did get help from USMC setting up by doing some of their specialized courses. Many people are confused because they do not understand what Navy SEAL's are and would not even know what a Frogman is.

I spent 25 years in service, 1 thing that really piss`s me off is pitting differing units against each other. Rangers, Seals, Delta and all the others are special ops with differing mind sets and missions. It is very wrong to match up with anyone who has differing mission sets and operational tempo. Many are the comparisons, but the reality is working to accomplish the mission at hand.
