WHAT SHOULD BE THE NEXT BENGALI FILM WE WATCH?

My granddad played the role of Mukunda Lahiri, the actor from yesteryears who humiliates the 'hero' in his debut film. His name is Bireswar Sen and he passed away before the film was released.

Satyajit Ray actually wrote the film keeping Uttam Kumar in mind. He did mention once that he would have shelved the film if Uttam Kumar would have rejected the script!

Next up please Gupi Gain Bagha Bain, Hirok Rajar Deshe!!! Another series of masterpiece .:')

Fun fact .....Mr Ray had said in a interview ,that he found many flaws while watching "Nayak" but none in the performance of Mr Uttam Kumar. By the way "Nayak" draws many facets from Uttam Kumar own life ,i.e probably the reason he owned this role. In my opinion Mr Uttam Kumar finest performance.

Satyajit Ray + Uttam Kumar(Arun Chatterjee) + Subrata Mitra + Sharmila Tagore = Masterpiece 4 legends of Indian (Bengali) cinema.

Rick could easily be a bengali aantel--one 'jhola bag', 'a panjabi', cigarette between lips walking inside coffee house shouting 'dada valo to!'

Uttam Kumar is one of the pillers of bengali film industry...he died almost 41 years ago but no body can replace him...he is the one with most romantic smile and glance.

By the way, Sharmila Tagore (later Begum Ayesha Sultana Khan Pataudi) is a famous Bengali & Hindi film actress, not just the mum of Saif Ali Khan (Sartaj), but she is also related to India’s first Nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore (first non-European to win Nobel prize in literature). Her Husband Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was a nawaab (royal title) and was also the captain of the Indian Cricket team.

The versatile genius of Ray was what made him a legend. He was able to do almost anything. You will further realize this if you watch his children's movies such as Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and Hirak Rajar Deshe.

Her name was Sumita Sanyal (Dream sequence lady talking about acting with Uttam Kumar). She was another great actress from Bengal. She was also there in the film Anand (Rajesh Khanna & Amitabh Bachhan). She was the girlfriend of Amitabh Bachchan's character in that movie.

Happy birthday Satyajit Ray . 🙏💐 👉 No wonder why once Satyajit Ray admitted there were a few flaws in his direction in ‘Nayak’ but none in Uttam Kumar's performance. It’s no surprise even 40 years after his demise Uttam Kumar still remains as he was in the '50s, '60s and the '70s - in the hearts of millions of Bengalis who worship their Mahanayak. 🙏❤️

The woman u were reffering is Sumita Sanyal.... She's also a well-known & gifted actress both in Bengali & Hindi movies.

I want to say something about Subrata Mitra( Cinematographer ) He is the teacher of my teacher. Subrata Mitra was professor of SRFTI(Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute). He invented his own technic of Zone System ( Ansel Adam ) which is interestingly based on SaReGaMa. I am lucky that when I was studying Photography his student and My professor Pallab Ray taught us that technic.

I don't think this film is personal to Ray. Ray's most personal film would be his last one, Agantuk. Ray, to my knowledge, never grappled with fame and fortune and throughout his life, did what he wanted to do. He even went on to criticize the mainstream Indian movies and movie audiences calling them primitive and not having much understanding of cinema

Finally, Nayak review came. Next Bengali film should be "Bela Seshe", "Jatishwar", "Chotuskone","Chitrangada".... Next Ray-film should be, "Hirak Rajar Deshe"(After watching 1st part, Gupi gyen Bagha Bayen), "Jalshaghar"(the Music Room), Calcutta Trilogy, Feluda Series, and his last work "Agantuk"

The Next Ray film u should watch- Aranyar Din Ratri, Agantuk, Hirak Rajar Deshe, Ashani Sanket, Feluda Movies...and so much more....actually watch every movie of him if possible...the more u unfold him the more u fell in love with his work.....we bengali say about RAY.."MAHARAJA TOMARE SELAM" ( THE GREAT KING WE SALUTE YOU)!!!

Nayak is great. And Uttam was fabulous. Ray envisioned this with him only. The dream sequence, along with the one in Awara (1951) is considered one of the best in Indian cinema. More Ray: Mahanagar, Aranyar Din Ratri, Agantuk

This performance was the one that when I saw, instantly fell in love with the charisma of Uttam Kumar. Edit-My favourite film of Ray as well, culmination of two giants of Indian cinema.

Uttam Kumar (original name Arun Chatterjee) was, is and will always remain the biggest superstar and one of the greatest actors of Bengali cinema. UTTAM KUMAR:- A LEGEND. A THESPIAN. A VERSATILE ACTOR. A TRUE GENTLEMAN. A SPECIAL HUMAN BEING. He was and still is a part of every Bengali household. He was the heartthrob of Bengali women across different generations. In my own family, 3 generations of women (my grandmother, my mother, my elder sister) had massive crush on Uttam Kumar. In Bengal only Uttam Kumar's films' box office collections used to be more than that of Amitabh Bachchan's and Rajesh Khanna's hindi films. Uttam Kumar got the title "MAHANAYAK" (pronunciation would be MOHANAYOK) from his fans, admirers and well-wishers.

When Uttamkumar's films were aired for the first time in TV in early 80's particularly the ones with Suchitra Sen on Saturday evenings entire marketplace used to become completely empty. Everyone was glued to TV for that time. This type of popularity is unbelievable. Shahrukh Khan is not even in his league either as actor or star!

Uttam Kumar is timeless....he is the best of the bests I have seen...and I have seen plenty of films from many movie industries...It's awesome and somewhat tragic at the same time that the finest actor of all time comes from Bengali film industry...tragic because he din't get the exposure that he deserved because of that and the world still remains quite ignorant of his excellence.

Next try "Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen", "Hirak Rajar Deshe", "Chiriakhana", "Shatranj ke Khiladi", "Aranyer Dinratri", "Seemabaddha", "Devi". They are all unique and in a class of their own. By the way, Satyajit Ray was famous but what I have read or known he was not infamously rich or had any stardom. He had to find sponsors and producers to fund his films. He earned comparatively more from his novels and short stories and articles that he penned. Also do watch his art work, his sketches and drawings, he was truly a genius!

While as you know Satyajit Ray is from Bengal, and the Ray in Bengali is pronounced as Roy but for most Indians it’s is Ray as in the Ray of sunshine! Well he was certainly the brightest Ray of shine ✨

You are spot on Rick That time satyajit ray was being offered big offers from big production houses to make films under their banner One request was from great Raj Kapoor he offered satyajit to direct his son randheer kapoors debu film and in return Raj offered to finance satyajits next venture But satyajit never accepted that offer It was this conflict that found expression in this film He struggled financially through out his career even after global recognition but never lowered his standard and compromised art

Would love to watch OSR reaction on "Hirak Rajar Deshe" - this 1980 satirical fantasy is a masterpiece of Ray - full of rhyming dialogues and songs - funny and hilarious, yet full of thought-provoking puns. A unique treatment in portraying the fight between totalitarian administrative system and common people.
