Nayib Bukele's El Salvador: Gang crackdown or return to dictatorship?

Күн бұрын

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is a millennial social media sensation, who has ruled with an iron fist over the last year, instituting a state of exception and locking up 65,000 suspected gang members. For much of the country, his policies have been an overwhelming success, slashing crime rates like never seen. But, thousands of family members of the detained say their loved ones are innocent. On May 1, they led a huge International Workers Day march against the government. Their stories, and the signs they carry, are eerily reminiscent. In the 1970s and 80s, thirty thousand innocent civilians were detained, disappeared and murdered during El Salvador's armed internal conflict and under brutal US-backed authoritarian regimes. Today, many fear the return of dictatorship.

Nothing was more inhumane nor undemocratic than arbitrary gang violence and intimidation. Bukele is not perfect but there’s no comparison. El Salvador went from being a failed state to a viable one.

@@lubenretrolletarios7901 I'm not El Salvadorian but I see people protesting in the streets and people were only arrested. It's a huge stretch to compare El Salvador with North Korea because in the latter those protesting would be tortured and murdered or imprisoned in lifelong forced labor camps along their families.

I agree. I am bilingual English/Spanish, and spent many months in El Salvador in both 1993 and 1995. This was right after their civil war, when the communist FMLN had been largely beaten down, and we were trying to help rebuild the country. My US Army Engineer unit built schools, roads, bridges, and community centers around the country. I became friends with hundreds of Salvadoran soldiers and civilians. They are at heart some of the most honorable and kind people you will ever meet. So many subsistence farmers living in countryside. It's an amazing culture. I have watched so many videos of Bukele in Spanish, and then I saw him speak to Tucker Carlson. I've been following the situation closely, and find him to be genuine and not corrupt. I hope that continues to be true. I had written off El Salvador as someplace I could ever visit again, because as a US Army veteran, the FMLN and La Mara Salvatrucha don't necessarily like me. Well, maybe they don't care, but it wasn't worth the risk. I so loved El Salvador and it's people back then, and am hopeful that he is the real deal. There is no reason he can't raise a country that size to become successful. El Salvador is slightly smaller than Vermont for example. Totally manageable. Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. I pray for their success.

Can we agree that the world is more complicated than “There’s no innocent people incarcerated” of course there’s innocent people incarcerated, even in the US, it’s estimated that 1/10 people incarcerated are innocent of their crimes, or at least are serving for overblown charges. A society must strive to never incarcerate innocent people, and all people have a right to due process. However, El Salvador was in a state of terror, and this quick solution more than speaks for itself. Now El Salvador is poised to begin to bring back democratic elements.

Here, the gang culture is destorying American neighborhoods and families. Something has to be done and of course when you look at whats happening it makes sense. Citizens cant protect themselves, the gangs rule the streets and kill at whim. Swift punishment is needed. And unfortunately these thugs have brought it on themselves. This information is misleading, from the initial biased comment: 'El Salvador is facing complicated times'. Do you think that times were simple and wonderful, when Salvadoran gangs had the honest people under their rule? On May 1st, the opposition led a relatively small astroturf protest, which included paying old ignorant people to show up. Just reason this, human rights were never respected by the gangs that now are in jail, and it is to be expected that relatives would be unaware of their son's gang involvement, or to ignore it for their own convenience. This video tries to compare what happened in the 80's when both right wing governments and left guerillas attacked people without concern for their wellbeing. Please come to El Salvador and see for yourself that people are free to live a happy life, except of course for the criminals that will rotten in jail. As a summary, democracy rules and +90% of the people support their government, so there is no dictatorship.
