El Salvador’s authoritarian model is spreading to Costa Rica, Honduras

Costa Rica, a tourist’s paradise and a country without a military, has historically been one of Central America’s strongest democracies, but times are changing. Last year, Costa Ricans elected Rodrigo Chaves, a man fashioned in the mold of Donald Trump, as their new president. In office, Chaves has attacked his political opponents, focusing particularly on the media and universities, and he has harnessed the power of social media to push conspiracy theories and fake news. And, as of late June, Chaves had the fourth highest approval rating-71%-of any public official in the world. Chaves’s popularity is second in Latin America only to President Nayib Bukele in El Salvador, another Trumpian outsider who has ruled with an iron fist under a state of exception for the past year and a half. While Bukele’s government has consolidated power and jailed tens of thousands of alleged gang members, including many innocent citizens who have been caught in the dragnet, crime has plummeted in El Salvador, Bukele’s approval rating is sky high, and his model of authoritarian governance is spreading, worryingly, to other countries in the region, from Costa Rica to Honduras. @@crch506dude, me and my family went to visit during summer. My dad and grandmother were shocked at how safe it had become. There's this part of town called Antiguo Cuscatlan that was known to be the most dangerous area in the country due to all the crime, gang recruiting, theft, and scamming stores covered entire streets. It was so bad just walking around there you were risking your organs. It is now empty of the scamming stores, guards at each block, people just chilling enjoying the place, there was even a crowd dancing in a park. My dad was speechless at how safe it had become.

The people of El Salvador 🇸🇻 have been very supportive of the heavy handed approach to dealing with crime and gangs. The homicide rates have noticeably decreased in El Salvador. The Real News Network are probably FMLN supporters, but the FMLN failed El Salvador when it was their turn in power. Most Salvadorans in my state of California are very supportive of Bukele and his Nuevas Ideas party

@@jameshill8493there are some inosents caught, but I can say the rate murder drop at so many levels. The gang problem in El Salvador was real big, the gang were proud to have tattoos affiliated with their factions and was easy to edentify them, we have to have in mind some gang members don't have tattoos and can be in places we haven't think of, theres so many cases those people were caught in churches, police, even inside the universities everywhere.

The amount of innocent caught and eventually freed will be nothing compared to the people that have been saved by decreasing the murder rate. No matter which way anyone spins it, it is worth it and what matters most is that the people of El Salvador approve and support Bukele. Bukele's presidency isn't an "authoritarian" model, it's a breath of fresh air and a promise of actual independence which is an inconvenience to the real world dictator (the US). I am from the US, so I'm allowed to criticize my nation if it truly is a free country. If El Salvador and the rest of Latin America become independent/1st world nations, then the US loses its access to cheap labor and control over our nations' governments. Which is inconvenient to the US (and Europe) when you take into consideration that 3 of its biggest enemies are in the pacific (Russia, North Korea, and China). It doesn't take a genius to figure out that calling Bukele a "dictator" is tactical slander, so the rest of the world is fooled, all the while Latin America remains weak and subservient.

I'm on the fence. I'm all for security, all for harsh measures on criminals, but unfortunately you will have some innocents get caught up in that. Still, I'd vote for Bukele if I lived there. As for Costa Rica, cutting costs on educator, social service and health sectors is more detrimental than positive for most of the populace.

Disappointed by The Real News Network’s slant on Bukele who has managed to reshape his country from the most dangerous country in the world to one of the safest. I don’t wish to see the military and police presence in the US, but if the murder rates were comparable to El Salvador in 2022 I would support whatever it took to keep my loved ones safe. Time will show how Bukele will distribute his power.
