You can't complain since the subway is over 100 years old way before any city

It’s hard to implement this on an ancient system. Even the London Underground has had difficulty doing so. These trains had to go through almost a year and a half of testing to ensure that it was even viable to have these sets on tracks with the tight radii the NYC subway has.

Relax.... They used to do this open gangway thing in NYC back in the days by leaving all the walkway doors open when the AC didn't work. 😄 The only difference is now there's more space & they have an Accordion section...

It’s hard to do this on old subway systems. Even the older London Underground lines don’t have these yet. It’s easy to say that when you have a nice new system built on the techniques of older systems like the NYC subway

However, the intercom speakers are not always working or heard well from the door, but if I remember correctly, the chime sounds at each and every door. Secondly, there are lots of people, tourists or otherwise, who might not have enough of a grasp on English to catch the meaning of that signature line in time.

@@shaheemhanley9055 Something that I think is unnecessary in many instances and, unless there's a delay, rarely means that the doors are closing in the next 2 seconds. So it's just noise pollution. I agree with the original commenter (and they make a good point about a universal visual and auditory warning that is more easily understood by non-English speakers.) Even LIRR, Metro-North, and PATH have door chimes a couple seconds before the doors actually close, with the former two not featuring a "doors closing" announcement at all.

The MTA is not one monolithic entity. Also, you have to remember that not all entrances, elevators and escalators are owned by or maintained by transit. Some are handled by private entities, especially when built as a tax or zoning benefit.

Of course between the old R32s and new R211Ts the C has carried fleet of R46s and R179s. And of course you’ll C that I used some puns about the C train. C what I’m talking about?

No. Gangway has always been a railroading term.

Just for marketing purposes......another word other than "gang" might have been better. Walkway, thru-way, etc. Could still change the name.....but doubt they'll do it.

It's a good idea for most cities, just not New York because NYC doesn't enforce a no homeless policy on it's metro system like every city in Europe & Asia does.

London actually got them from 2009 onwards on the Metropolitan Line. However with the amount that had to be ordered for 4 lines, it did take until 2017 to deliver the final examples for the District Line Don’t forget that in that time Bombardier Derby would have been busy building lots of commuter EMUs for the rest of the country and a few DMUs as well

Of course they’re not replacing everything. No single order can ever replace the thousands of different subway cars, especially with the differences between the numbered and lettered lines. Instead, these are targeting the last of the old fleet built in the 1970s.

That information is 100% available if your cared to look at it.

You think $2.5 billion is too much for an order of about 1,200 cars (and about 400 more potentially if they accept the second option order)? How much do you think it should cost? How does it compare to other cities? And why should MTA replace the entire fleet at once? Only small agencies with a few hundred cars or less do that, but more than half of our fleet is still fairly recent and we're still getting our money's worth out of those. Plus, there are more new trains in this order than there are of the oldest cars to replace, which should help run better service. Or do you think current service is adequate and MTA should prioritize fleet renewal more?
