There is no one to report them to. I've found work equally as bad as this where the electrician has been NIC affiliated. When I contacted the NIC they were not interested but instead asked me to pay them £799 + VAT and they would come and inspect it. The industry is still rubbish. All you can do is sue them through the civil courts where they may get a CCJ against them.

Got a quick tip for siliconed mirrors etc. keep a bit of that nylon banding that’s used on pallets and boxes, use it as a cheese wire to saw down or up the back of the mirror. Yes it’ll damage cable insulation, but most times you get the mirror off in one 👍👍

In 2014 i was refurbishing a kitchen in a tenement flat where a certain Gale Black lived , she baulked at the price that my spark (proper pro, vat reg'd and all that)had given to change the consumer unit , and got her "own guy". Late on a friday afternoon this clown turned up , did a LIVE 63 amp disconnect /re-connect of the mains in from the meter (its a tenement flat) and proceeded to bodge a new rcd board into place , however , one of the bedroom ring mains was dead . Anyways im busily cleaning the grout in the kitchen when the dodgey spark and flat owner Gale came into the kitchen and spread out several lines of cocain , and snorted away. He then went back to the box , pulled the whole lot out from the wall and saw a little wire that had been a partial on the old board and the copper was brittle , took a hammer to the plaster untill he found the copper was soft in the cable , connected it like the lights in the video there with chop block and insulation tape , put it all back on the wall , had another line and left . So if there's a big fire above Droothy Neighbours pub in Edinburgh then look in the hallway of the flat above on the 2nd floor , i bet it starts in the lath+plaster wall.

Mate did you really screw through the wago box? Next time you pick one up have a look at the side of the box (either side). There is a slot with a plastic tab. That’s what you use to attach them to walls nit screwing though the plastic box. In the unlikely event that something heavy falls on the box or say someone steps on it, the one you screwed in will be destroyed and will need replacing which is why the slot on the side was added. But hey what do I know … I’m not a sparky …

Nick, a tiny comment on the way you installed the Wago box. The CPC wago should be left floating and not slotted in (however tempting). You'll notice there are two 'fins' that run down each inner side that are designed to fit a 5-way wago for use as the CPC connector. This is so that if a cable is pulled the CPC is the last cable to disconnect.

Report to Building Control as well for the fan extaction ducting.....not compliant....without even knowing if it's a timer or humidistat with timer for the required over-run time required by building regs to clear steam etc... Is there a fan or mirror isolator? The choc blocks should at least be in boxes...or the screws in the blocks become exposed conductive live parts that anything in the ceiling void could contact and cause a fire/shock. Extending a circuit requires an EIC and appropriate testing on the circuit to ensure it can take the extra load etc... Cables need clipping etc... etc... etc... They should have checked for RCD protection prior to doing the work in the bathroom.....No RCD.... No new electrical work. Did they even check for supplementary bonding because of no RCD ? Is it still in place? You should invoice them for your time and materials in rectifying their bad and dangerous workmanship! All this and you have not even has a look at the plumbing or structure they may have damaged getting the drainage for the shower outside etc...

To be honest we have bathroom refurb contractors on site and they never put the loft insulation back either. Probably because nobody checks up so we only discover it when the ceiling turns mold black. I agree those fans are garbage. I also only fit big in-line timer fans these days, ironically usually upgrading a refurb bathroom following a mold and damp survey. Higher CFM, noise relocated to the loft - Works!!
@davideyres955
@davideyres955 Жыл бұрын
Pulling very humid air and dumping that in the loft will result in water forming on anything below the dew point. Given she has insulation the loft will be cold in the winter it’s likely to be like a rain forest. Leaving that for any length of time and you’ll be looking at structural damage. Cowboys.

I once bought a new British demountable campervan which had a multitude of unsafe faults: absent sealant, faulty electrical wiring, bad plumbing. I took photos and video and fixed it all. I sued the manufacturer for the cost of repairs. I didn't win, because in the UK, you have to give the supplier the opportunity to rectify faults. As they were incompetent, I didn't want them near it. However, the judge was very sympathetic and berated the supplier - and I did win some money back due to mis-invoicing (btw, they had a fake VAT number). More recently, I bought a £12k home heating and water heating system from Fischer UK. Their installers were dreadful. Afterwards, I had to fix the wiring, reprogram the non-working water heater and repair the damage to my airing cupboard. One of the thermostats they supplied looked like it had rattled around in their van for months. They were completely unapologetic and it took a lot of effort to get them to supply a replacement stat. They wanted to visit to remedy the mistakes, but like you, I don't want such cowboys ever in my house again.

Sent an official report with lots of basic typo's (including surname of the inspector ironically). Complaint escalated and I asked for representation from the people who wrote the EICR. NICEIC turned up again and agreed serious faults... but as it's a new build they blamed the builder (even though an NICEIC registered electrician signed it off). One point about the lights would quite wire switch and load not of been a better option instead of wago boxes. Just an idea . Your mother i law must be so angry with them shisters . But happy she has a son in law like that knows what he’s doing. Thank you for keeping us updated on this.👍

Can I just point out that proper bathroom fitters are still tiling. These panels are designed and sold to people who can't fitted bathrooms but like to charge. I come across this on every panel fitted bathroom plus some horrendous work.

Depends what was there before, if they've added or changed a circuit yes it needs to be tested, he obviously knows there weren't downlights before the job, so a circuit must have been extended. If someone changed previous downlights to new ones and they were competent , it should technically be ok, but they would hopefully notice no cpc

certs are to have legal proof that someone did the "no idiotic easily preventable mistakes left behind" checks. :/ Even a pro will have faulty wago, faulty terminal block, or accidental scraping the wire in the ceiling against sharp objects and exposing its insulator moment. The cert is expensive because a fire is way, way more expensive. So is the tool that checks.

Less bothered about certificate and more bothered about the quality of the work. Ppl pay these cheap prices, don't want to pay a reasonable price for a reasonable Job, instead skimp about and end up with shoddy workmanship. No sympathy at all.

Your in-laws should report the bathroom fitters to the local building control. What CPS did the bathroom fittings claim to belong too? In short the fitters did not comply with BS7671 thus this is a criminaly negligent install so could also be reported to HSE.

Welcome in Multi Traders world.. Plumber Multi, Carpenter Multi, Bathroom fitters etc.. Not long ago I installed Air Source Heat Pump for customer, I offered to re pipe the bathrooms they refused cause The carpenter on site was a Tiler, Electrician, Plumber, Bathroom Fitter and also a Kitchen fitter. They nearly jumped on me when I nicely asked do not touch the heating in any case cause I will refuse the warranty. Shocking work I hope you get paid for all the work!!

Looks like a tidy enough bathroom job, just the sparks work like you say a bit dodgy, nothing worse than most houses who’s had a diy owner. Personally I would connect ducting up, replace insulation and enjoy the new bathroom. Show the bathroom guys the video of the mistakes and negotiate your time being paid for, say £200 each for you and your pal. Don’t be an arse an try and ruin someone. They’ve Probly got kids just like you, just trying to make a living.

Fair play for reporting them, but I'll tell you how this will conclude. Building control/council won't be interested that it wasnt carried out by a registered installer-what they will do is tell your inlaws to get it tested by someone who is. Seen this before, she'll probably get offered a token discount by the installation company. Its pathetic.

One: LED Driver from 240 to 12v lights is what I would do. LED Drivers need enough space for ventilation and can be 4 channel so... TWO: those led tapes behind the mirror? cheap and not even IP65/IP67 for a start and best to be diffused. Also 60 per metre but preferably 144 in channels with diffusers around the edge. NEVER out normal led tape in a bathroom when it needs to be waterproof or rating IP65/67. I would fit IP67 which covers both led side and back side. So yeah, when using led tape near steam/water, use IP67 as best option such as in a bathroom even if in a channel with diffuser. Might want to mention, current regulation for insulation now is 270mm or 300mm which that insulation wasn't. Just noticing is all. Something you may want to mention.
