From David's 1984 solo album, "About Face".
I couldn't find a video on youtube for the studio version of this song, so I decided to make one. Some pics and video of David to go with the music. Love the guitar solos at the end. The videos are clips from the DVDs "Live at Pompeii" and "Remember that Night". All copyrights for the music, pictures, and videos belong to their respective owners. :) Enjoy!

See, there is _absolutely nothing_ wrong with those lyrics! Why couldn't he just write like that for Pink Floyd? I think Anthony Moore, Polly Samson, etc., got quite pretentious and went down some wrong roads. "Sorrow", which David wrote alone, is also a bit pretentious (_"Plumes of smoke rise / And merge into the leaden sky"_ is really trying too hard) and the bit of "High Hopes" that mentions _"myriad small creatures"_ sounds really forced. On the other hand, the "sleepwalking back again" bit is really cool. Anyway, even if "Sorrow" is a bit too arty, it does have a certain sincerity and it all makes sense. I've always preferred songwriters who write alone; I think solitude, sobriety, and serenity produces the ideal scenario for inspiration. One of my all-time favorite lyricists is Ric Ocasek. There's no argument about the Cars: "All songs by Ric Ocasek" is a very clear and direct statement, and none of the other band members have ever complained about it, because those records sold like crazy.

Ben, on the "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" David also wrote the words for "One Slip", "Yet Another Movie" and, of course, "A New Machine". He had no other collaborators on lyrics besides Moore and Samson. Well, maybe Waters. For example, in "A Pillow of Winds"...

*THANKS SO MUCH* for posting this beautiful track! I love this song and most of _About Face_ very much! I am a big Roger Waters fan, and I have a reputation for criticizing Gilmour's Pink Floyd efforts, but I absolutely _love_ his solo albums; they are warm and sincere. David wrote every song on the album himself, except for lyrics by the legendary Pete Townshend on two songs (Pete admires both Roger and David, and he's the only living songwriter who could ever match Roger's genius). This song, Gilmour wrote alone, and it's _so_ good -- both lyrics and music! Funny how this has the same John Lennon "Working Class Hero" riff that Roger's _Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking_ is based upon. What I love best (besides David's singing) is how the solo starts off acoustic, very tasteful, then seamlessly becomes a wailing, reverb-drenched electric, blasting passionately at piercing high notes! (The electric doubles the acoustic's last solo phrase before taking over.) The song is over too soon! Brilliant! Okay, I'm starting to sound like a rock critic; I'll shut up now. It's just that I was 16 when I bought this album, and I listened to it and _Meddle_ back to back for a week straight. So both albums remind me of youth and freedom. Gilmour is better off as a solo artist, as is Roger. When _The Endless River_ comes out, I'm just going to listen to _On an Island_ and _Live at Gdaansk_ a lot. Maybe break out _Wet Dream_ and _Broken China_ too.

+Ben Culture Many words can be written about this song, because it's definitely one of the most beautiful bits of music from the whole Floyd+ canon. It's the sort of song that that shows what amazing heights Gilmour can reach, and it makes me kind of sad to think that had they had a healthier relationship, Gilmour and Waters could have been producing relevant, vital music through the 1980s that took something of the sonic stamp of The Wall, The Final Cut, The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, and About Face (let us please forget Radio K.A.O.S. - I remember buying the cassette when it was new and thinking "what. the. FUCK. is. this. shit!?") into some amazing territory. In an infinite multiverse, I'm sure they reconciled and created some amazing music well into the 1990s, with one final tour in 2005, which made a billion dollars and left the fans in that universe satisfied and blissful.

thx. The acoustic guitar solo eluded me for years as the tone of the guitar was so metallic and bell-clear. Now I realize it was harmonized 2 guitars that made it so sweet.
@BenCulture
@BenCulture 9 жыл бұрын
I don't want to argue about it, but I believe the acoustic solo itself is a single guitar. However, an electric guitar doubles the acoustic's last solo phrase before the electric takes over completely. What IS doubled, is the low notes of the rhythm track, which match Gilmour's lead vocal. The same is true for Roger Waters's _The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking._ In fact, you can barely hear any strumming on that album, just the riff.
@janbabelsberg
@janbabelsberg 9 жыл бұрын
The acoustic guitar is played 2 times over the whole time of the acoustic solo. One for the left channel and one for the right. There both are played real, No harmonizer pedel what so ever where used. If you listen carefully you here the tiny very tiny differences between left and right channel. But Gilmour is close to perfection.
@BenCulture
@BenCulture 9 жыл бұрын
Jan Babelsberg * sigh * You are talking about the acoustic rhythm part. Of _course_ THAT is doubled. That's very common studio procedure. As for the actual acoustic-guitar SOLO I specifically referred to, I am not at all certain it isn't ADT'd and/or chorused, Of course no harmonizer pedal was used, because the solo is not harmonized.

+Diego S. R. Wow! Really? I am going to the April 2016 show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Would be insane to see if he plays the electric part of the solo this time as during About Face, Mick Ralphs from Bad Company played the electric parts while David just played the Acoustic parts. I actually have the Toronto show from the 1984 tour on video. It would be a dream come true for me if he played the electric solo for this song at the show I am going to.

There's so much probabilities, because there's not now a tour with Floyd style (David said on a interview that he doesn't want to repeat something did some years ago), so I think he will perform as he had performed his live's as on the About Face tour. Maybe he will play Comfortably Numb when ending the tours as well, but surely 10% of his new set list will have any Floyd song.
@bigdbc

+Diego S. R. I can deal with that if he plays Near The End that's for sure lol. He will have a whole new album to play live also. Some of the typical Floyd stuff that highlights guitar solos will surely be played of course. Time, Comfortably Numb. etc. Can't wait either way!

Does anyone else think it's so great and funny that this song features an acoustic chord/riff thing similar to Roger's The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking? Waters wrote P&C the same time he wrote The Wall, and presented demos of both to the band. I suggest this song was probably somewhat influenced by P&C. But this song does much more than any particular five-minute chunk of P&C. It goes more places, harmonically and rhythmically. Love the nylon-string solo, morphing into high-pitched electric!

I wanted to add, IMO, this is exactly what the last song on an album should be like. It should be kind of grand, perhaps melancholy, but definitely beautiful. The refrain or chorus should be infinitely repeatable (repeat and fade), and any soloing should be intense and pretty. A great non-Floyd example of this would be "All Mixed Up" from The Cars (really, the last song on any Cars album). Lou Reed's "Heavenly Arms" from The Blue Mask. Roger Waters's "Amused to Death", of course.

Oddly, 2 of those times, this song came repeating in my mind although I understand this has more to do with different circumstances of death than I (almost) went through. I'd do anything to get my hands on a live video version if it exists. I have looked everywhere & have found no live video clips of Near The End. There's a live concert audio clip on youtube but no concert footage. Plenty clips from his 1984 tour exists but not this song. When you listen to this solo, something tells me that there's no video clip by design due to it's preciousness. If someone knows that it is available just respond to my comment here or send me a private message here on youtube.
