Matt's Off Road Recovery

We got a call for a Jeep Grand Cherokee that the upper ball joint mount had ripped out of the aluminum differential housing!
He was 4-wheeling on a pretty gnarly trail up on Hurricane Mesa.
We recruited Paul, from Fab Rats for his welder and welding skills.
• Helping a Jeep get out...
It was eight miles in this trail so after some 4-wheeling to get to it, some winching to get the axle back in place, and some welding to hold it there, we were able to tow it out.
The banana got a flat on the way out due to the valve stem getting ripped off.
Hope you enjoy!

I agree but even before I saw this comment I was wondering what happens when these guys hit their limit and lose it. Watching him welding under the Jeep reminded me how my boss in 1972 set a station wagon on fire, by welding. My boss was a black-smith, but his main-income came from regular iron works like Widows Handrails and other items. I don't think in the early 1970 there was a aftermarket for towing-bars with the towing-ball. My boss was known around town that he could fit a custom towing-bar. Well one day one 1 year old Opel-Record Station-Wagon came in, and my Boss started to work on it fixing it with a towing-bar. We had a service ditch normally covered with wooden-planks strong enough if the front-tire was resting on it, the wood would still hold. In front of it there we had some stairs to get down, and at the proper place one would lift the planks out and do the work. My boss had cut all the pieces he needed, I was holding the tube which was going to be the towing-bar. Everything was prepared for the in-place welding done. I was kneeling outside beside the car, while he was welding. The bright light is too strong as welders know. So I was looking outside our garage (the doors open) suddenly my boss yelled fire, run the stairs up, what I do not remember is, if we had a fire extinguisher, I know I was watching it from the outside but somehow he got the fire stopped. What caught on fire was the flexible gas line coming from the Gas-tank running to frame of the car. This line was burned by some of the welding sparks during welding. The side of the car was black from the fire, and my boss had to buy the car from the owner, since the insurance did not cover such accidents.

Incredibly difficult rescue in so many different ways. It was hard for me to even watch it while sitting in my chair knowing what you are going through. I was twisting and turning my chair all over the place trying to get you guys out of there safely. I am really glad you made it out of there OK. You have the best team in the business! Kudos also to Paul making the welds in such a difficult place and have a welder that would work while on a steep angle.

A bunch of guys and some girls knowledgeable in their craft getting together and problem solving and no one saying we can't do this they think their way to a solution get the job done and then on to the next! That road was really steep and that Grand Cherokee owner should be adding one heck of a tip on top of the payment! Ed is the man... looks about 80, smokes, and is climbing up that hill moving rocks! God I was laughing while watching him hike up that hill with a chair and umbrella, he’s got class. This needs to go on your merchandise if it isn’t already “So, we got a call” Best comment 7:08 “I know that, just let me get my nerves back” 7:42 “I came to quick”. Ok, no comment. 17:06 I wonder if that boulder is still rolling! Thanks for sharing your work, family and friends with us. Appreciate it and the opportunity to see the landscape if the are you live. When I first got in the fire department some 46 years ago, our brush truck was amilitary spec Dodge Power Wagon. I have thought for years that 'Unit 18' was the most bad-ass 4WD ever built...it made it''s own roads regularly and was occasionally special called to pull other, lesser brush trucks out of the woods when they got stuck. I do believe 'The Banana' out-bad-asses old '18' (Which, BTW was also painted yellow!). That little Jeep Cherokee will go anywhere!
