I like the idea of completing the textures and values of the top layer before even starting on the negative shapes behind them. It sets up the contrast.

I never thought I'd say that I like your negative side, but oddly enough - I'm digging it! A wonderful intro to anyone unfamiliar with this style/approach and a great reminder for old chumps like me to vary up and get back to painting in ways that it's easy to forget! Very well edited video and perfect demo! Thank you, Steve! :)

Beautiful! I am working on a set of small negative watercolour paintings at the moment, and watching a lot of KZfaq videos on the subject for inspiration and guidance. Love your leaf painting! I like the way you are alternating between background (negative) and foreground (positive) detailing on the leaves - I think this must help with keeping the context and ultimate goal of the painting in focus. So far I have left all the positive work till the end but I think this approach has a lot to commend it! Love your Bible quote at the end. May the Lord bless you. New subscriber today!

Steve, this just reinforces the fact that observation is so important to us artist types. I have worked on three different florals this summer in acrylics and have found it impossible to get a fair rendering of the leaves without intense observation and attention to light source and shadow. Sounds so simple to say but really eye opening to see on the canvas/paper. Great video and nice pick for the Psalm! Hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Oh such an eye pleasing painting. And I agree with you a 100 %. As I was mostly drawing with graphite pencil my whole life, I was extra focused on values and composition. I also noticed that values and composition are still the most important in any colorful drawing/painting. I had a lot of trouble with color, so I just stuck with black and white. But now I see what I was doing wrong: colors do help cover up some minor value or composition mistakes, but they are significantly less important, I was picking colors of wrong tones and values. I can pick colors that go well together, and I can draw correct values, but I don't seem to be able to combine the two :( I also learned that some tactical detail placement can help to dodge composition mistakes, and timely erasing/lifting can save your values.

I’ve done negative painting with leaves around a hibiscus flower as a study before, too, and I TOTALLY agree that it’s perfect for it. It’s a great way of sort of simplifying the whole thing. Also, super in love with Kilimanjaro paper! =^.^= I’ve been meaning to review it for forever but I think I’ve just been ranting and raving about it in comments instead. =>.

This is a great painting, but not that good of a demo for negative painting. I would not consider this a negative painting demo, it's all just one layer, only the leaves are overlapping. You use Sterling's paint brush, but not his method of doing negative painting - pushing back the layers 1, 2, 3, 4 or more layers back, creating shapes deep into the background. If you are painting on the leaves, I consider this is positive as you are working on the leaves themselves, not the leaves and shapes behind. Susan Crouch has a good way of teaching it, too, even better than Brenda Swenson, and she's good.
