Neil deGrasse Tyson: Elon Musk Is The Most Important Person Alive Today

""As important as Steve Jobs was, here's the difference: Elon Musk is trying to invent a future, not by providing the next app," says renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.
» Subscribe to CNBC Make It.: cnb.cx/2kxl2rf
"What Elon Musk is doing is not simply giving us the next app that will be awesome on our smartphone," deGrasse Tyson says. "No, he is thinking about society, culture, how we interact, what forces need to be in play to take civilization into the next century."
Between Musk's work at Tesla developing electric cars and his SpaceX plans to put humans on Mars by 2024 (and, eventually, to colonize the planet), the billionaire tech executive is attempting to revolutionize both human transportation and space exploration, deGrasse Tyson says.
Of course, as an astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York, deGrasse Tyson might be expected to have a soft spot for Musk's grand intergalactic plans. But deGrasse Tyson, who also hosts the show "StarTalk" on the National Geographic Channel, argues that space colonization could have a tremendous impact on civilization, potentially eliminating the need for warring over dwindling natural resources.
"Because there's unlimited resources in space; resources that, on Earth, we fight wars over," deGrasse Tyson tells CNBC Make It. "In space, you don't need to fight a war, just go to another asteroid and get your resources. A whole category of war has the potential of evaporating entirely with the exploitation of space resources, which includes the unlimited access to energy as well."
That's the sort of universal issue that Musk is trying to tackle, deGrasse Tyson argues, which gives him the potential to have the greatest long-term effect on our civilization. "[H]e will transform civilization as we know it," deGrasse Tyson says.
Granted, Musk has had his share of detractors over the past year. Musk was forced to step down from his role as Tesla's chairman as part of a settlement with the SEC over a series of tweets in August in which he discussed taking Tesla private (the SEC alleged the tweets constituted fraud on Musk's part). The billionaire CEO has also received quite a bit of criticism for, among other things: seemingly smoking marijuana on video, calling a British cave diver a "pedo" on Twitter, and clashing with journalists during an earnings call.
However, deGrasse Tyson feels that Musk is somewhat underappreciated, though he argues that Musk is beloved by many people, including Tesla owners and anyone interested in space exploration. ("Go, Elon Musk! And, I don't care if he gets high," deGrasse Tyson jokes about the controversy over Musk supposedly using drugs.)
"People who own Teslas love their Tesla …" deGrasse Tyson says. "Anyone who knows and cares about space exploration knows and cares about Elon Musk."
"[W]e're on the frontier of the future of civilization, and no I don't think he gets his full due from all sectors of society," says deGrasse Tyson, "but ultimately he will when the sectors that he is pioneering transform the lives of those who currently have no clue that their life is about to change."

@@richardshane2080 You are saying like any random American can run multiple different companies at the same time. Musk DID build SpaceX from the ground up, with eventually to this day the help of NASA of course, but he still built the company, did all the calculations, hired engineers and everything himself at the beginning of SpaceX. SpaceX also hires mostly US citizens. So now you know, if you want to run a company like SpaceX and become a billionaire, you have to show the initiative first, as Musk did, nobody is going to ask you if you want to run a space company. Also Elon Musk in an American citizen, he got his Green Card and a Citizenship before founding SpaceX among multiple other companies he has founded.

@DecepticonLeader
@DecepticonLeader 3 жыл бұрын
@@cinnamon-skateboarding5987 I disagree. Hybrid systems will be more unreliable and more expensive to service as there'se more points of possible failure. Hybrids work great in this transitional period (maybe 10 years) until we have the infrastructure to support everyone going full EV. However, in the future when petroleum products are rare to come by, you'll have to rely on your battery in that hybrid, which is often tiny in those cars. I will buy electric soon. Maybe later this year or early next year. I already have solar panels, so I know my energy will be clean.

No it won’t, it’ll be called the era were we started off with a direct attack on the U.S, the afghan war starting, 2008 economic collapse, trump’s completely awful presidential years, a pandemic that could have been prevented, and likely another war and economic depression worse than the one before world war 2. Elon should be remembered as the man that down played the pandemic, supported the Myanmar military coup, prevented Union from forming in Tesla and abused his workers.

@@distantcloud8640 if innovation requires human sacrifice I’d rather it be through consent, like the cosmonauts in the Soviet space program, they knew they’d die and were okay with that. But when someone like musk anuses his workers just for no reason other than money then that’s where I draw the line. SpaceX doesn’t innovate, they are simply taking old ideas and putting them into use. If NASA had an actual stable budget they’d be blowing SpaceX out of the ballpark.

Isaac Solis Probably not in astrophysics, but Neil De Grasse Tyson’s been known to speak on a whole slew of topics besides astrophysics, some of which I don’t think he has any actual formal background in. I don’t remember that much off the top of my head, but as one example, he considers many/most non-STEM college majors to be a profound waste of time. I’m not an expert on the topic and am actually a STEM major myself, but I don’t see how that could be correct, especially when experts in those fields who know far more about them than he does argue for and have demonstrated otherwise. There are two reddit posts about this that I recall, but probably way more if you search-both actually about the same event. Neil De Grasse Tyson was invited to lecture for an undergraduate club or something along those lines, and his speech repeatedly bashed majors like Philosophy and Literature (or anything non-STEM).

Basically his argument is, in both case of explorations, that the initial push at the frontier is so costly that no private company can undertake it thus requiring governments to shoulder the cost upfront. Then then we learn more it becomes economically viable for private companies to step in making it cost effective and profitable. So im not sure if he really said that private companies like space x can't do it. He disagrees however with Elon on colonization of Mars. Elon Musk has a few under the radar projects that have the potential to make the world a much better place. They aren't even mentioned here. Here's a quick overview: Tesla: electric cars are self explanatory. They are also developing full self driving cars which will reduce car ownership. There will be 10% of cars left on the road. Solar City (now a part of Tesla and called Tesla energy): their battery solutions alone can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Batteries are critical for transitioning to renewable energy since renewables don't generate power all the time. SpaceX: self sustaining civilisation on Mars and other planets and moons. Asteroid mining might also be enabled by SpaceX. Open AI: non profit. It researches the impact of AI and publishes them as studies. Might be able to prevent an AI that gets out of hand. Neuralink: might cure diseases involving brain, senses, and movement in the short term. In the long term, we access the Internet by thought (the next iPhone) The Boring Company: a cheap and fast transportation alternative to highways. Elon has already transformed banking through PayPal.

Totally agree with you. Most people seem to think Elon Musk is only about SpaceX and Tesla. He's got like 4 other biz like Starship, The Boring Company, Neural Link, that will transform human civilisation global commerce as we know it today. Elon Musk is sure to become the first trillion dollar man.

I am glad Mr Tyson changed his mind about Elon. For so long it was hard to like Neil because he was always doubting and talking crap about SpaceX and Elon. He said governments are the only way to space. Now he did a 180 and my dreams have come true. We need our greats working together.

That's the best thing about it. He didn't think it was possible for private space company to exist but Elon did it, brought new technology and surprised everybody. This is where Neil realised Elon's importance and abilities and got impressed by the ambition and focus of him.

Neil spurred Elon all the time, and Elon finally proved Neil wrong... which Neil graciously conceded. That's scientific mindset and good-natured competition of ideas as there were meant to be, and which are still prevalent at excellent Universities. Love both Neil and Elon: their "dispute" propelled Elon to what he is today. THAT's what is really awesome: they were a dream team all along.

There is nothing more important in the long-run than the expansion of humanity and life itself into the universe. This is the biggest paradigm shift since life left the ocean. Of course, Elon Musk is the most important person alive today.

Look at the number of employees at Tesla (45000), SpaceX (7000) and SolarCity (15000). Are they less important than him? People worship false idols way too much these days. He only looks superhuman because a lot of smart people do a lot of work for him. The below is just a reminder, not an accusation. Law 7: Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit. Use the wisdom, knowledge, and legwork of other people to further your own cause. Not only will such assistance save you valuable time and energy, it will give you a godlike aura of efficiency and speed. In the end your helpers will be forgotten and you will be remembered. Never do yourself what others can do for you. - The 48 Laws of Power

@@PhillLOL Here's why Musk gets so much credit (and wealth). Its not just because he's a brilliant engineer, it's also because he's a serial entrepreneur who has built several companies beginning at a very early age (the guy was programming video games at 12 and a software millionaire by 28), risked everything he had (his entire $300 million+ fortune) on incredibly risky, long-shot ventures to improve humanity. He built Tesla and SpaceX from the ground up. Of course, there are other important players like Gwen Shotwell, Tom Mueller, JB Straubel, but Musk was ultimately the one who put his money where his mouth was. Musk doesn't just have smart people working for him, he's quite brilliant himself (doing much of the actual engineering work himself).
@PhillLOL
@PhillLOL 5 жыл бұрын
@@AlexM-wq7in I know people more brilliant than him who got less credit and less wealth. He's the poster boy now because he had a lot of success. Maybe he's today's Edison. He only improves what is and doesn't go very much out there. Landing rockets, well done. But if SpaceX started building UFOs that you could buy for 200M a pop I'd be impressed. My hint is that one of Elon's April's fools jokes that talked about "Aliens from the future share teleportation technology" is his way of acknowledging the truth that we have been visited (as shared by the channel Darryl Anka) without jeopardizing his credibility. So he's only at the frontier for the masses. He's not at the frontier for those who look beyond established dogma. Maybe NASA would cut his funding if he didn't play by their rules. Maybe he's a coward. I don't know.

@@lncerante I doubt you are going to follow through on this. And if you do, let me know how it works out for you and to whom you intend to report it.
