On this episode of StarTalk Radio we’re coming to you live from New York Comic Con 2019! We have returned to opening night of NYCC once again to explore the science of comics, sci fi, and pop fiction. Our intrepid host Neil deGrasse Tyson is joined on the main stage in front of a packed house by comic co-host Chuck Nice and astrophysicist and StarTalk geek-in-chief Charles Liu, PhD, to explore everything from Star Wars to vibranium to flying through space.
We start with the building blocks of all comic books and science fiction…literally. You’ll hear about some of the most notable fictional elements that are responsible for the powers and stories of some of the most popular superheroes. Find out how much Thor’s hammer would actually weigh if forged in a dying star. We explore the lore of Wonder Woman and the science behind her bracelets. We investigate the history of vibranium. Dive into the controversy surrounding Iron Man’s suit being powered by palladium.
Next, you’ll learn more about the classic sci fi techniques of getting around the universe as fast as you can. Discover more about warp drives: how they work, why the ship is actually moving in a “bubble,” and how warp drives add to the scientific authenticity of Star Trek. Then, we switch over to Star Wars. We break down their constant jumps to light speed. Charles and Neil air out their grievances with some of Star Wars’ science inconsistencies - especially involving X-Wings and TIE fighters. However, discover why they praise the inclusion of a double sun on Luke’s home planet of Tatooine.
We stick in the realm of Star Wars as our trio ponders the portrayal of alien life in science fiction. We discuss why a lot of aliens look humanoid. But on the flip side, we debate whether aliens must look humanoid in order for them to be relatable to the audience. We ponder the exploration of exoplanets and Neil tells us that if you find a place with oxygen in the atmosphere, you might find life. Lastly, you’ll learn why E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial might be a potato. All that, plus, Neil ends our evening at NYCC with a moving reading from his new book Letters from an Astrophysicist. (Warning: Adult Language).

So anything anyone tells us thats diffrent we say your nuts couse we know. But we dont know anything. No one has any proof other than rumors. Just discovered you from your Master Class add. When I found out you were an Astrophysicist I immediately subscribed! I loved Charles Liu! How refreshing to listen to incredibly intelligent minds! I haven’t even been a subscriber for an hour yet and I love it! Neil, I hope for you that if you have a son, that he does or some day will acknowledge your accomplishments as you did for your father. I lost my father in 1999. He was only 63. Today I am older than my father ever was. I miss him everyday and loved your comment that talking about them brings them back. Fabulous video! I can see hours of watching your videos already! Thank you!

The reference to parsec in the Kessel Run actually does refer to distance - Han Solo making the Kessel Run (a distance of 18 parsecs) in under 12 parsecs, refers to his moving closer to a black hole or holes thereby managing to cut the distance down to about 11.5 parsecs, from the original 18... so, distance, not time. :)

Kessel run- A 18 parsec smuggling route that passed by the maw (black hole). The completion of the run was a source of pride and accomplishment among smugglers. By moving closer to the black hole of the maw, a star-ship pilot could trim parsecs from the run while increasing the difficulty of the trip.

Neil.. What a beautiful eulogy and dedication to your father. I lost my own father just before Christmas 2017. I know you are not big on the whole "afterlife" thing, but I'm sure he was always proud of you also, and still is -- Perhaps his essence or spirit is restricted to heart, mind and history; or maybe he now exists in some realm we cannot explain.. If nothing else, his atoms and energy are still here with us in this universe and always will be in some form. Plus, we have YOU ;)

Kessel Run - under 12 parsecs is correct! The route is NOT a fixed distance and it goes through very distorted space-time zones, so the distance expression is like a pilot's jargon. The duration of the travel does not matter, only the pilot's ability to choose a "shorter-smaller space-time route". The greater the space-time distortion, the trickier for imperial ships to follow. The star ship's pilot has to choose such a route through Kessel space, so it would be EQUIVALENT with a standard 12-14-15 parsecs of distance. The lesser, the better and riskier.

It annoys me how so many people cry about how "a parsec is a unit of distance, not time," as if they think they are making a valid argument. It has been established in (what is now known as) Legends that when Han brags about completing the run in less than 12 parsecs, he is talking about DISTANCE, not time. The Kessel run takes you through the Maw, which is a series of gravity wells. The route is traced through these wells such that it extends a set DISTANCE (I think it was 14 parsecs, iirc). Deviating from this set route is dangerous because then you end up skating too close to the gravity wells and can end up getting killed. When Han brags that he completed it in under 12 parsecs, he is bragging that the Falcon was maneuverable enough to skim into the danger zone of these gravity wells, thereby cutting the travel distance down. So, when people complain "Oh, but a parsec is a unit of distance, not time," it means they are assuming Han is talking about time, when he is, in fact, talking about distance.
