Watch Neil on "Could You Survive The Movies" with Jake Roper on @Vsauce3 - • Could You Survive ALIEN?
On this episode of StarTalk, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are answering your fan-submitted Cosmic Queries about aliens in film and television alongside Jake Roper. You can find Jake on the KZfaq channel @Vsauce3 and as the host of the KZfaq series “Could You Survive The Movies?”
To start, Jake tells us what alien movie might be the easiest to survive. Your immediate answer might be E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial but don’t be so sure. Neil shares what Steven Spielberg told him about E.T. that’s sure to change your understanding of the character. Speaking of Spielberg, we investigate the weaponry used in his film War of the Worlds. We also debate if the government could ever set up a secret organization to monitor aliens similar to Men in Black.
Find out why your assumptions of how extraterrestrial life takes shape might need to be open to more possibilities. Jake explains why he thinks the deep ocean could be home to extraterrestrial life as well. Discover more about The Blob, The Thing, and why Chuck loves the alien from Alien. We explore the film Arrival and its depiction of aliens and the personal used to communicate with aliens. Neil airs his grievances about Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
We explore Contact and its portrayal of how humanity would react to the discovery of intelligent life. We ponder the likelihood that humans will end up like how they’re imagined in WALL-E. Lastly, we discuss of there’s a protocol for first contact. All that, plus, Jake tells us why he thinks Paul Rudd should be Earth’s representative to meet with intelligent life.

Neil's wife (in a hurry): Honey, whats the time? Neil: Time is relative, babe. It would be inexcusably egocentric of me to tell you time from just one reference frame. Theoretical & empirical data suggests that time does, in fact, move differently for different people. Temporal differences is a fascinating subject brought forward by Einstein's theory of relativity. Oh, by the way, do you know that while Einstein was working on generalizing his special theory of relativity....... Neil's Wife: FML.

@Ketraar
@Ketraar 4 жыл бұрын
31:02 @Chuck Nice if you recall the movie, the reason the aliens came in the first place was to "ask for help in 3000 years". They needed the Terran to learn their language since that was tied to the premise that learning it would "unlock" the ability to perceive time in a different way. So it was not an issue of them not being smart enough, its us that were "dumb" and they "uplifted" us so that we could help them "later". Unlike in Encounters this makes perfect sense within the "lore" of Arrival, whereas Neal makes a good point about Spielberg's movie. The only thing I would say is that Spielberg's movie was made in the 70s and we have come a long way since wrt to sci-fi, but it was pretty great and groundbreaking for its time.

@FightCollective
@FightCollective 4 жыл бұрын
@Evan Koch The Thing was set in a closed environment to highlight the paranoia. The story simply wouldn't have worked in a open city like setting. Also the setting was a hark back to Lovecraftian stories as The Thing is tributed as a Lovecraftian sci fi movie. You had to have watched The Thing back in like the 80's to really appreciate it's special effects. It was terrifying and had cutting edge effects back then.

There is a book series in Poland called "Depth" in which humankind can't communicate with other alien races in-universe because they all understand the world differently. For example one of the species perceived all the colonies of bacteria living on our bodies as "the humankind" but didn't understand that the body they are living on is actually human. Other species recognized more dimensions than we do and so on. Really awesome concept when it comes to humans and other life in-universe.

ARRIVAL : Neil has mentioned on multiple occasions that the Ceptopods writing on the glass would be flipped or how would they be aware of whether or not to flip it. In the movie the language the use is circular meaning it has no beginning or end, there is no start or finish, time exists as once because of their language and because of such they can reach into their future and past. This also answers Chucks question of why id they not learn English or the other human languages, the reason being that their language was the gift they brought to Earth.

B W with a 5w laser , it can hurt a little bit on skin. But Just looking at the spot on the wall gives you permanent blindness. Now for a laser that can turn you to ash? Must be in the range of visible light, and VERY high powered. therefore it would blind everyone instantly.

Arrival is my favorite Alien movie and extraterrestrial form of life due to its abstract relation to time and space. I also enjoyed their way of communication. The whole film was just brilliant in my opinion; with the way they handled the foreign political relations/reactions vs the scientific communities relations/reactions in such a event, and just the whole personnel relations that were thrown in that were integral parts to the story. Just an overwhelmingly great movie. If you haven't watched it then please do, I highly recommend.

Yes, they were talking about films, but the best aliens are to be found in "Rendezvous with Rama" by Arthur C. Clarke and the other books written by Gentry Lee. I wish a movie was made and Neil knows about it because he interviewed Morgan Freeman who wanted to be on that movie and they discussed the issue.

Yes there’s different ways heat transfers, radiating like microwaves, conduction like from food to plate, and convection like through the air (furnace/ac).
@MaryAnnNytowl

@@wingnutthecat well, not *always,* really. Materials that aren't considered microwave-safe can be heated up by the microwave, itself, and not the food. Some crockery is like that, possibly because it still has some pockets of liquid inside the clay? I'm not a potter, so I'm clueless why, but I have noted some plates and bowls that are much hotter than they should be for what was heated up in them. For example, I warm my ice cream just a tiny bit, to have the consistency of soft-serve, but there are some bowls that I bought at a thrift store awhile back which, if they happen to be the ones used for this, the bowl ends up hotter than the ice cream is. Which means it isn't from the food heating up the food container, as the food is colder than the bowl.
@wingnutthecat
@wingnutthecat 4 жыл бұрын
@@MaryAnnNytowl think it is due to something to do with the material itself like air pockets or something like you say (not sure as I'm not a microwave-ologist either lol) With metals the problems become I think it pulls electrons off the metal or something to that effect. I wonder why a simple mirror of some variety wouldn't be a good defense against any laser weapon. Theoretically, you could have a "mirror shield" of a shape that would send the laser light directly back to the source.

I think my favorite alien movie was Under the Skin. The alien itself is just a humanoid alien, but the whole movie is from the perspective of the alien on earth, and it's super weird and I think they did an amazing job of putting you in the alien's shoes. So much so, that nobody really likes the movie because it's so weird!
