Neil Gaiman Explains Sandman Changes From Comic to Netflix

Given the subject matter, being stranded in “development hell” might feel more than apt: Of all the comic book properties that have evaded adaptation to other mediums, The Sandman might be one of the most legendary. But now that Neil Gaiman has learned to speak “fluent showrunner” thanks to his work on last year’s adaptation of Good Omens, things have changed dramatically.
However, while Gaiman is currently at work on a Netflix adaptation of the series with executive producers Allan Heinberg and David Goyer, the first Sandman adaptation to ever actually be completed isn’t on screen. Instead, this week Audible has launched the first part in what promises to be an epic audio-only experience, adapted and directed by Dirk Maggs (who first wanted to adapt Sandman for the radio in 1992). The cast is incredible, including James McAvoy, Michael Sheen, Riz Ahmed, Justin Vivian Bond, Arthur Darvill, Kat Dennings, Taron Egerton, William Hope, Josie Lawrence, Miriam Margolyes, Samantha Morton, Bebe Neuwirth, and Andy Serkis, and it’s anchored by Gaiman as the Narrator, keeping the action moving while reading descriptions drawn from his original comic book scripts.
Details on the Netflix series are a bit scarce, in part because production on the Netflix series was shut down by the pandemic, but in this extended interview with Collider, Gaiman explains that because the Audible adaptation is extraordinarily loyal to the comics, he looks at it as a “control group” that lets him and the Netflix writers experiment with making changes to the original story. He also reveals what kind of changes they’re looking to make, as well as getting into how they were able to assemble such an all-star cast for the Audible adaptation, and if that cast might affect the choices being made for the live-action series. (Crossing my fingers hard that Dennings can reprise the role of Death.) Watch the full video of our conversation above, or read the lightly edited transcription below.

All I care about is Neil Gaiman having full creative control of the script, and no outside influences wanting to change this and that. I trust Gaiman’s writing, he’s never let me down👍😁

That would be attitude of Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman is not like that, he is perfectly chill with changes, he said that many times over the years in his interviews that what he wrote, what he created already exists, it is already his, there is no reason to open doors that are already open.

The Corinthian...should be season 2. The first season’s antagonists should be the magician Roderick Burgess and the Arkham Asylum escapee John Dee. The issue 24 hours has always been a highlight of the series for me. Looking at Locke and Key however I don’t think Netflix will adapt it’s darker elements. And I’m not interested in the series if it’s not horror. The first volume of sandman is crushingly brutal and dark. Sandman implodes people’s heads, there’s depictions of hell, John Dee is a ravenous murderer. I feel like they are going to downplay these elements and if so, what a bummer. There’s a movie script floating around from the 90s I think however that featured the Corinthian and it was quite good.
@youronetruegodcthulhu5043

@@jonathanauffarth5646 Oh yeah, totally, dude. I loved that issue. That whole volume, really. But part of me is kinda worried because it does use more than a few DC characters, including John Dee himself, from outside just the Sandman universe, and I don't really know how the whole rights thing works in this scenario. But yeah, absolutely. Dollhouse is when they introduce Corinthian isn't it? And if they're doing preludes and nocturnes and dollhouse for season one, then we'll be seeing him I guess. But it really does need to feel like horror. That's what drew me in when I first started reading them.

He has several books of short stories, I definitely recommend picking them up! As someone that used to write, I adore his work. I loved the audible version, but the art in the comics has always stood on its own as well. I fell in love with Dave McKean’s work through the Sandman covers (he did all the covers). If you have the chance, give the comics a glance. He used several different artists and it’s worth the look.

Zorkahz Awesome to hear and (virtually) meet a fellow fan! We went to Comic-Con a while ago and hung out at his booth with his wife while he was out. She was such and absolute pleasure to talk to. Dave warmed up when he realized we actually purchased from his booth. It was a few days into the conference, and mid-afternoon, so I understand why he was a bit standoff’ish. Those conferences can be quite grueling. At the risk of telling you about a different piece of his work, he did the cover and artwork for the Batman Arkham Asylum graphic novel. The book is a bit dark, but I’m still blown away by it. His mixed media usage is always stunning. I forgot there is a separate graphic novel of all his sandman covers.

I love everything about Sandman! Bought the Audible audiobook and will definitely watch the Netflix series. Michael Sheen as Lucifer... I laughed so HARD at that. I was totally: "crap! They cast Aziraphale as Lucifer". It was the BEST! And James McAvoy as Sandman... oh man... he was AMAZING! I wonder if they will ever going to be able to cast a Death who I will find perfect. My expectations are always way to high. Kat Dennings was fantastic in the role! But also... she sounded too... American xD I'm just complaining for the sake of it... she was fantastic and would definitely be a great Death on the Netflix series. Not perfect, but definitely great! Fun fact: I was going through a minor panic crisis when I bumped into this interview, and Neil Gaiman's voice is so soothing and the things he was saying are so amazing that I got through it. THANKS!

I've first read the Sandman graphic novels many years ago (around 2003-4) and was falling in love with it and its creator. Hearing this audio book is as colorful and amazing as the original graphic masterpiece, and it stands as a masterpiece of its own. I love Wanda but I think there was a huge, painful meaning to her death and that her dying how she did hammered the authenticity theme. How one should live their authentic self. But I would love to see what would have happened if they had picked a different choice which allowed her to survive.

@@athannyx6815 I agree 100% Wanda's death had the most impact next to the older black woman. We got to know her, we got to root for her, then most readers feel in love with her. And when she dies it was a real gut punch. People really felt it. And that's a big part of good story telling. After all these years, the one character from a game of you that most people always will talk about is wanda. So in a way she truly had an amazing impact on sandman readers, and that's a good thing. If you're lucky enough to have gotten a copy of the sandman book of dreams There's a fantastic short story in it in which wanda does live. It's truly amazing.

A lot of high performance people tend to be serious/focused about things they create and work on. At times it's not work to them. Unfortunately or fortunately the general audience tends to want to see and hear the fun side of crafts/ end results and the creators without seeing or knowing the amount of input and more to get where they are at present. Maybe because people want to create fantasies in their heads of how things must be and not the real reality like (they want fame, money or attention) not wanting to take on the harsh responsibilities and the fails that come with it before any good results.

From what I’ve seen in the little behind the scenes short I saw recently it did look pretty good so I will reserve judgment until my eyes are upon the first episode.BUT I would be remiss if I said I was not disappointed by some casting choices, I am a huge Sandman fan and have been reading it and analyzing it and re reading it for the better part of 20 years. It’s probably one of the few pieces of entertainment I return to once a year. With that being said I feel let down that death, rose, unity Constantine and Lucien and Lucifer are not being cast properly. Am I a racist? ( I hated how marvel cast a British white woman as the ancient one) no but I want to see a faithful adaptation, preacher was guilty of this too with the Tulip casting (preacher in general was just not good on any level and a horrible adaptation of a fantastic comic) and despite the swap it was a horrible misfire as she was nothing like the comic character whatsoever. I also do not like the fact that Gaiman has been utterly dismissive and negative toward fan back lash and frankly has been gaslighting when he says theses characters( specifically the Endless) can be any race. Yes they can, to a specific culture that looks upon them ( for instance the tales in sand issue where dream is african or another instance when dream appears to Martian Manhunter as a huge demonic-like skull on fire) but for the better part of 70 some odd issues dream as well as the endless have appeared in there own way as pale. That’s what I wanted to see with Death as she is the most iconic. I’d be frustrated on the same level if black panther was cast white, or if batwing was cast as Cuban, or John Stewart green lanter was cast as Asian. The conceit is always “what should race matter as its just a character and we are staying true to the core nature as such” ok great wel what if I decided to make roots with a jewish cast? It’s the same thing, they are an oppressed people and we are staying true to the core issue but the only change is the color. Why do we have to do such stunt type things for their own sake? Why can’t it just be a faithful adaptation without involving race? That’s just my two cents
@ammazkhan7586
@ammazkhan7586 3 жыл бұрын
Na man it's not about race, just our attachment with the characters and our Desire (heh) to have them be truthful and faithful adaptations. The desire is the same, everyone is simply presenting their fears and concerns through different mediums, complaints, worries and comments. Nothing wrong on your part. Gaiman has mentioned that they looked through hundreds of actors to get the character of Death right. If literally hundreds were rejected for this actress, then I'm confident in Neil that he's gotten what he wanted. I am very concerned. I'm very emotional when it comes to Deaths portrayal. I'm sure everyone has the same feelings. So yes, I am very very concerned if things don't go right. But it's better to put a stone on the heart and hope for the best. Other than that, Gwendoline is a good casting choice in my opinion. As I've been a fan of Tilda Swinton and her very androgynous mystique and caricatures, I would have MUCH rather preferred Tilda for the role of Lucifer over Gwendolin, but I'm sure she will be able to perform at par as well. ~~I don't see any problems with Corinthian tho? Seems like a good casting imo.~~ Edit: I read Lucien as Corinthian. I agree with the Lucien part, but I hope it's not something overtly changing since his role in The Doll House is a minor one.

I can make my argument because I loved Constantine (2005) the brooding figure Keanu portrayed was phenomenal and more relatable than the janky-ass TV show (even though it had a true to comics portrayal of him. It simply didn't have a spark. Be it story or acting, that charm was missing. If these two are to be taken as examples, character development is more important than looks, and I think Neil will always prefer the former. Time will tell. These comments aren't going away for the next 10 years or so, so we'll see whether it really mattered or not. 😁 That's why I'm hopeful and you should be too :)
