I’m a drummer, my drumming hero is this man, Neil Peart (R.I.P.)… I saw Neil/ Rush 17 times… He was also the lyricist for Rush and wrote many books… he was gone to soon. Thank you for this nice tribute and thoughtful reaction.

This joke was about ten years before Neil Peart died, but a RUSH fan was at the pearly gates, waiting to get into heaven when he heard a familiar. He panicked and asked Saint Peter: "Has there been a terrible tragedy? Is Neil Peart in there?" Saint Peter said "Relax. That's God. He just thinks he's Neil Peart."

While Neil has been referred to as the professor, he never stopped learning from other people to make himself better.

Every tour, Neil would work up a solo that he wanted to do *every* show for the tour. In later years he also added in a short section of improvisation, as he stated that was something he was trying to work on after so many years of solidly-constructed solos. So, this same solo you just watched was pretty much the same for the whole tour. In this one, he wanted to showcase how the drums could be melodic, as well as show something of the history of drumming. African rhythms and melodies, military style, marching style, and jazz, with a little section where he could improvise (the really wild part of the solo). The horn sounds were triggered by various electronic pads and pedals, as well as from the 'malletKAT' marimba. One of those pads was also programmed to start up that jazz song ending. He also shows his 'limb independence' by keeping one time signature with his feet, while his hands are playing in other time signatures over that. The bit where he's crossing his arms back & forth is called a 'cross over'. After a while of practicing, one can get good at it...but Neil took it to a high level of proficiency. Glad you decided to check it out. Rush has been my favorite band since I first heard them, and not just because of Neil's drumming (I was a drummer too...can't currently play due to physical issues). Oh, and guess what? Neil was friends with Danny Carey, and Carey lists Neil as one of his influences.

I love his first drum solo from All the World's a Stage, he was in his twenties and he had such raw power in that solo amazing. "Ladies and gentlemen the professor on the drum kit."

As a drummer and lyricist Neil has inspired me for over 40 years. He is missed but never forgotten.

To answer your question, Neil wrote and composed his drum solos. There was very little improvisation in the solo. Actually, a part of the solo contained a drum song he wrote called pieces of eight (what you call the little mermaid sounding part🤣). Nice reaction!

this man was a loss to than entire drum community. he was such an intelligent man as well. he faced a lot of hardship when he was alive as well. he lost his daughter in a car accident and not even 6 months later from that his first wife to cancer. he could have stopped when that happen but he persevered on. one of the many things that made him the absolute untouchable legend that he was.

Loved the video. So the hand cross over triplets trick was one of the first drum tricks I learned and they are a lot of fun. The Professor was the greatest drummer that ever was. What cements this title is that he not only plays but he composes and writes lyrics. Compare this to El Estepario Siberiano. He has said that he can not read or write music and I have not heard that he has composed any new music. His ability and technical skills are "un-matched and off the charts amazing." But no one so far unseats the Professor. R.I.P. Neil and thank you for the beat.

Already considered the greatest rock and roll drummer, Neil performed at a Buddy Rich tribute, and he felt that he didn't play as well as he could have, compared to many of the Jazz drummers playing. Speaking with one of them, he got the name of a drum teacher and began taking lessons, and over time, he changed his playing style. Neil never stopped learning nor practicing, and one of the reasons that Rush retired is Neil didn't feel like he could continue playing at the level he was used to. He was a very talented yet humble man. His death came as a complete surprise to the rest of the world, only a select few people were aware of his cancer, including his band-mates. I'm really glad that he retired when he did, to finally spend some time with his family. As someone who saw Rush perform between 20 and 25 times over the years (I don't even remember,) I'm glad that the band went out on a high note, and the band-mates were able to spend time with their families.

During the passage after the drums rotated , you'll notice that there is a background sound of a waltz just playing along at its own pace. His feet are carrying that tune, while his hands are in a completely different speed and beat. It's called limb independence. That solo was about mid point of a 3 hour concert.

He was called "The Professor" for a reason. All his drum parts were written to service the song. Every symbol, drum, hi-hat, bass pedal and trigger hit was thought out to perfection. To your question about prepared vs improvised when it comes to Neil’s solos, back in the 70’, 80’s and early 90’s they were 100% rehearsed and were the same every night. After Neil studied with Freddie Gruber he started leaving some room for improvisation but for the most part they were still rehearsed. I believe the improv section in this solo is during the “The Drum Also Waltzes” passage where Neil is playing in 3 with his feet and soloing over the top of that in 4.

Magnificent. I saw this solo in the U.K. and in Rotterdam. The first time I was in the front row. The second time It was no seating, and I was right at the front, against the barrier. Trust me, this is not improvised. I must have seen Neil at least a dozen times from 1981 onwards, and was in Toronto to see what became (after the event) their farewell tour in 2015. I was lucky enough to get the band’s autographs after the first show I saw in 81, in the ticket foyer, after waiting for an hour after the gig. All three signed my concert ticket (the only paper I had available). Sadly I lost it in moving properties decades ago…something that I can’t believe I was careless enough to let happen. As for who’s best. That’s easy. Neil Peart is your favourite drummer’s favourite drummer. A virtuoso, poet and total gentleman. I was distraught when I heard that he had died, especially HOW he died…fate being particularly cruel to him. R.I.P. Professor. The GOAT.

Many folks don’t realize the total limb independence Neil demonstrates in this solo. He plays in many different time signatures simultaneously which resolve every 12 to 25 beats. Truly incredible. That is why he is known as “The Professor “.

Neil Peart said that he had to 'map out' his drum solos for Rush shows... it was the highlight of every Rush concert, and every performance was unique in a way, even if he was playing the same structure. Drumming is about time signatures and beats... so, Peart would be a perfectionist and even mathematical in what he would play on drums. He even admitted that in his last years of playing, it was difficult to recreate his own tracks from decades past in concert when he was in his 50's... He was a true musician and growing up, he was tall, shy and awkward... didn't fit in in school. Neil Peart was definitely the 'brainy' one in Rush, and reading books was his obsession at an early age. Drums became a fascination in the 60's after he heard music by The Who (and their maniac drummer Keith Moon) and Cream (feat. drummer Ginger Baker)... He admitted that playing drums was the thing that he was admired for, so he pushed himself to the peak of his abilities... Peart even traveled to England, hoping to make it there as a musician in the early 70's, but he came back to Canada, disappointed... Peart worked a day job in Canada and played gigs w/ local Canadian bands, when he got a call to audition for a band called Rush in 1974... He had never heard of Rush, but went to the audition and impressed Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, so he was picked. Soon, Lee & Lifeson discovered that Peart had potential to write lyrics for Rush, thus he became the band's main lyricist.

How did he remember it all? He developed and augmented it over the decades. It looked effortless but he was intently focused and held himself to the highest standard every night, even whilst in excruciating physical pain in some instances, but the fans would never know it. This solo was pretty much set in stone, though he had some parts where he could improvise a little bit, but with all the sequencing at the end, that HAS to be spot on everytime. If this tells you anything, Danny mentioned Neil as the his favorite drummer. Who am I to argue with that?

Neil Peart wrote the majority of his solos but he did leave a few sections for improvisation. Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time. He is generally ranked in the top three when it comes to rock drummers. His nick name was "The Professor". Neil is number one on my list for many reasons. He incorporated the drums into music much differently than most rock drummers. His drumming really sets the mood in Rushes music and he is very melodic. To me he is just on a different level than other drummers. Neil also wrote the lyrics of the majority of Rush songs. Writing the lyrics helped him to accent not only the other musical instruments but also the lyrical cadence of their songs. Neil inspired may other drummers including several that became famous. As a drummer, discovered Neil as a teenager 30 years ago. He has been without a doubt the number one drumming influence in my life. I'll just say, if your an inspiring drummer, if you can play Neil you can play anything. Just have to say the Danny comparisons drive me crazy though. Danny has his place, but he is sort of a one-trick pony. In this solo, Neil goes through a progression of playing jazz, marching band snare, switching to traditional grip, using a chaotic moment where he gets a chance to improvise during the solo during Rush's tour, working in electronic hi pads, doing cross overs, using his off foot for his free floating "waltz" section. It just goes on and on.... Plus, he wrote books on his cross country motorcycle trips, plus he WROTE ALL RUSH'S LYRICS! It's just stunning. Glad you've been introduced to him though. RIP to the 🐐

Neil Peart is at the top of the list for all time great. Before Neil Peart there was Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake and Palmer with the 1st ever record electric drum solo in a song called Toccata. But as the 1st , it just set off a sequencer with preset notes and had 6 different ones.

I was lucky enough to see him live at a concert in Santiago de Chile. He was the best. Another very impressive drummer was Gabriel Parra from Los Jaivas. You can see it in “La Poderosa Muerte”, in the video recorded in Machu Picchu. ; )

You found the master Neil was very much a compositional drummer and often talked about wanting to work more on improvisation

I often say that Neil Peart never made a drum stroke that he didn't intend to make at that precise nanosecond. Many drum solos you will see are improvised. Many others will have a very basic plan (like slow section, fast section, tom groove, then go all out) for the solo, but the specific notes are not pre-written. This solo was planned down to very specific detail. What you don't see is that some of the electronic drums are programmed to play doubles, have an echo (delay), or trigger events. In order to be on time with that video at the end, Neil likely triggered it himself. It is also likely that when he triggered it, he got 4 clicks in his in-ear monitors (not heard by us) that counted him in and gave him the tempo. You should also know that Neil was more than just a drummer. He wrote the majority of the lyrics in their music. He also arranged most of their songs. Getty and Leif would send him the riffs, and Neil would arrange them into the order that fit. He would compose his drum parts based on what the bass and guitar was doing, making sure he hit accents and stops with them. All of it was very deliberate to make them tight musically.

Glad of my time of life.I have seen Rush everytime they have come to the UK ,and Europe since 1979 ,and i have been across the pond several times to see them ,including their last ever show in LA ,which at the time i didn't think was the last ever show ,and Rush would be coming back to the UK and Europe. Then he was gone....I wept like a child who had lost a cousin or family member,never met him in my life ,but when you have loved a band since you were 11 .....Met Alex and Geddy nice guys ,but Neil nope lol

I LOVE watching young people discover Neil and Rush. My friends and I were so obsessed with Rush that we stalked them on the Power Windows tour in '86 when we were teenagers. We bumped into Neil in their hotel elevator and he CLEARLY was uncomfortable with us asking for his autograph. Neil was a brilliant, gentle soul and I felt so sad when he left us. As far as modern drummers, I don't know how you can do much better than Larnell Lewis. His performance in this video is jaw-dropping and so much fun, smiles all around, the way music should be. Neil's solos were all very accurate and rehearsed to perfection. Some parts get rearranged or cut, while other parts are resurrected as a couple of measures of his double bass/tom tom rising and falling part is. I was lucky enough to see Rush 19 times and Neil's solo was always so eagerly anticipated by the crowd because we all knew just what genius we were going to witness. Rest in peace Professor, I still miss you very much 😢
