Too many criticize Peart’s perceived lack of swing and drive as if it’s some sort of offense. He was a humble guy, and despite his command in the rock genre, knew he had a lot to learn in other genres, such as jazz and big band swing. He took lessons from Peter Erskine, despite already being a world-famous drummer. All that matters is the he played what he wanted to, and didn’t need any purist’s approval to do so. He made a lot of people happy.

Speaking as a non-drummer, there is so much to enjoy in this solo and, indeed in his playing in general. Such a musical drummer.

@gordoeinstein - This was the first time I ever noticed someone switching between traditional grip and matched grip. After it was over I came down here and found your comment. I'll be Neil could play with traditional grip both hands.

The one from the 90's is just as good if not better in my opinion. What an amazing talent. This is what it looks like when you love what you do and you get to do it your whole life.

Only criticism is his bass hi hat thing he always does in his solo. Should have had others than that . Also no double bass in a jazz setting. Lol

Neil is a great drummer agreed, but he doesn’t really swing as much as Buddy did. He uses jazz techniques in a blended rock fashion and other players who have used techniques like that are drummers such as Ginger Baker and Bill Bruford. Carl Palmer used the same kind of refined techniques too.

Buddy was only fast. He didnt compose or create the way neil did. Neil was only paying hommage to buddy. Buddy could never create what neil did

@@Augfordpdoggie Buddy was not Neil. And vice versa. Neil was definitely in a class all his own and to be honest so was Buddy. They’re two totally different drummers with two different styles.

Congratulations! You COMPLETELY missed the point. No kidding, one is not the other - did you figure that out by yourself, or did mommy help you. It’s a tribute - one great drummer paying homage to another. Nothing but respect for both, each in their own inimitable style.

This performance is incredibly subdued as far as his style and/or approach. There are earlier performances where Peart is tight as F while playing Buddy Rich and no one would know the difference if 'you' weren't watching and only listening.

@@bradcrosier1332 damn dude why are you so upset? The dude was just making a point, we all know Neil and Buddy had their own strengths and weaknesses. It’s a fact that Neil can’t pull off this style of drumming like some others can. Take a chill pill
