Jimi Hendrix stands as an equal to the greatest musical artists the human race has produced
@johnwattdotca

Jimi was a product of the British Invasion, artists like Paul McCartney, the Animals and the Rolling Stones bringing him over to be a modern American blues-man, when Led Zep and other English blues bands did old American blues songs, saying they wrote them. Many people were involved with producing his very over-dubbed recordings, including other guitarists, thinking Larry Coryell first. Jimi was a United States Air Force radar technician. When the C.I.A. asked Magnavox to built the worlds' first two twelve track tape recorders, they gave one to Jimi for Electric Ladyland. I saw The Jimi Hendrix Experience at Maple Leaf Gardens, and it was amazing what he did with a Marshall amplifier that only had one volume control and three tone knobs. Jimi was Jimi, and I love his romantic songs, but he's not a virtuoso, what takes a violinist being sixty or sixty-five to be that good. He also couldn't write music, what helps keep it around as history. I'm left-handed. Watching him struggle with a right-handed guitar upside-down made me buy a left-hander.

Neil hit the nail on the head when he spoke about the looks on peoples faces. Imagine going through the rock and roll era of the 60's and towards the end of that era this guy appears and starts using feedback, distortion, playing with his teeth etc. It must of been mind blowing. I only wish I could of seen him live and wish he could of been around to receive his award.

The fact is, Jimi lacked the arrogance of the "superstars" of that era, while being approximately 100 percent better than any of them - he gave so much more of himself to his audience while playing, there is no bigger mistake in music than acting like your audience is ignorant.....Jimi was REAL. (real talented)

Kind words from Neil for an under-appreciated rhythm section. Listen to Noel's bass on Red House, or Mitch's drumming on Fire, and you hear a trio, not just Jimi. Neil is correct in that certain chemistry allows certain musicians to shine.

Jimi Hendrix...like everyone....had his influences. His were many & varied. From Mr. Son House, the legendary Robert Johnson, B.B. King & other bluesmen & women...to...George Harrison, Beck, Clapton & the god Apollo. But Jimini gave guitar playing something that none of the others, no one else, had given it...before or since. His mojo was something that the world couldn't fathom & will never see again.

Jimi was a sponge and had an encyclopedic knowledge of music history between styles, musicians and the reasoning behind the theory. Saw Jimi ,Mitch, and Noel play at the old Bears stadium ( Denver's Baseball's team , originally) 1967. I believe it was called Rocky Mountain Festival. My mom took me to look for my older sister. There was a report on 10:00pm news of cops beating gate crashers and gassing them With tear gas. All true. By the time we got there it was a free concert. Hendrix was playing his last two cuts. His last performance I'm told. My mother went down to the stage and walked right in front , she could have reached up and touched him As I watched. All along the Watch tower was a long and gratifying thing to hear live from the MASTER. A EXPERIENCE I will never forget. RIP JIMI. YOUR #1 FAN.

I think that's something that is, sadly, overlooked when people talk about Jimi. There have been great guitarist before Jimi, and many after Jimi, but not many of them wrote such great songs as Jimi. I feel that Jimi's song writing was on par with Pete Townshend, Jagger & Richards and Gilmour & Waters. As far as who's the better writer between Hendrix & Young, I think it would come down to personal taste. Both are obviously song writers on a level that very, very few can match.

What in the hell is wrong with people, always compelled for some inexplicable reason, to play the "so and so's better..." game with everyone and everything? If you have any respect for either Neil or Jimi, or both (which you should regardless, of whether you care for their respective musical output), then demonstrate that respect by refusing to play that asinine game. Both are entirely different and unique artists and have no business being compared in such a nature.

Jimi Hendrix changed rock music and his guitar technique was totally unique.I saw Beck [lots] and Buddy Guy a few times and they definitely were brilliant .However they did not have the magic touch Hendrix had ..Read Claptons or Townsends biographies and listen to what they say When alls said and done probably 50 years or less the authors of books reflecting on the pop/rock.era 1958 [Elvis] to whenever its finished[now in my mind ] will i,m sure understand and pragmatically have definitive chapters in terms of key changes that shaped the times .ELVIS,DYLAN,THE BEATLES,JIMI HENDRIX ,THE SEX PISTOLS and lastly NIRVANA These are the ones that changed things in pop music whether you liked them or not .The Stones ,The Who ,The Kinks ,Led Zeppelin,David Bowie ,Elton John ,Queen etc all contributed to the unstoppable popular music explosion over the 30/40 years we have endured but only a few changed it .

I don't know why you would interpret people crediting their own peers and in many cases personal friends, with inspiring them, as "referring" to "their own accomplishments". As silly as the whole premise of the RRHF is, I think it's at least in the spirit of R&R that the introductions often include personal anecdotes. That is at least one thing that is not pretentious or "formal".

I have to say though, that I think Billy Cox is much better than Noel Redding was. Most of my absolute favorite Jimi Hendrix compositions were done with Billy Cox. God, I would give anything for Jimi to still be alive writing and composing all of those genius songs. Losing Jimi way too early was the biggest tragedy ever in music history. Jimi himself had no idea how brilliant he really was. He played some excellent shows in September of 1970 that he thought were awful. If he only knew the truth

Everybody has an opinion who should have inducted Jimmy other than Neil. Young had a great respect for jimmy as a guitarist and as a person as he knew him well and had hung out with with him making him a friend respecting another friend who passed way to early. All this whos the best brigade shit going on that a better guitarist should have inducted him need to grow up music is only a competition for ego maniacs and theres no shortage of them in the shallow world of showbizz jimmy was above all that shit and he cringed at it learn something from that its called humility. 2 of my favourite guitar players who were totally different and thats how it should be all you impersonators great work neil RIP jimmy.

He did release some compilation solo albums posthumously (after death). Jimi is usually credited as a solo artist for much of his work anyway. Moreover, let's be real. 99% of his performances were a one-man show.

+ Dave Grohl Jimi was no doubt godlike but he and Chas Chandler carefully selected Mitch and Noel, it was no fluke as they complimented him perfectly and Mitchell is the drummer most identified with Hendrix. Don't sell them short although personally I like Billy Cox over Redding....

Jesus... It was so difficult to listen to his mumbling. He had an occasion to really commemorate Jimi's achievements... and he fucked it up. Well done.

Couldn't disagree with you more but I respect that that is the way you experienced what Mr Young expressed at that moment.

@RebelThoughts Possibly - the evidence I've read is compelling. However with both of them dead I don't think that we all ever know the truth. A trafic loss either way.

Jeff Beck was years ahead of Jimi. Beck helped pioneer the psychedelic guitar with the Yard birds in 1965. And yes Buddy Guy was one of Hendrix's influences but he had many from Charlie Christian to Link Wray. He was in awe of Mike Bloomfield and loved Dylan's lyrics. Jimi knew every song that had a great guitar.

boberson33 exactly.jeff beck had a conversation with jimi about what he should do.jimi told him ,"when you play blues, it's as boring as a monkey ." you need to experiment with electrical sounds" now listen to jeff, and you can see he took the greatest advice he ever needed in his career, cause jeff just wasn't getting anywhere..

Michael Hesler, Jeff Beck couldn't put a patch on Hendrix's ass. Beck was, and has always been, a glorified cover artist. He played embellishments while the orchestra played the changes. Whereas Hendrix was the fucking orchestra. I bet even BB King was a more accomplished rhythm player than Beck.

I guess electric ladyland had Mitchell and Noel but that is not a great record just a great showpiece for Hendrix. Because honestly his first two records were his best and that may just be that artists run out of good material. THe Band of Gypsies wasn't bad but come on now... come on man!

I think Clapton should have made the induction. Or Pete Townshend. Or, even better, Linda Keith or Chas Chandler (without whose efforts we don't know what would have happened to Jimi). It's a shame, though, that Hendrix had to wait 4 years before being inducted. He should have been in the first batch with the Beatles and Elvis.
