I used to listen to Ralph Emery back in the 1980s when all I had was a radio and somehow I could get that TV show on audio only on the radio, kind of weird. Never liked Ralph Emery…. Total milquetoast country, but he would bring on some of the outlaws once in a while. Why couldn’t that goddamn idiot put on a cowboy hat or something and look at little bit country?

February 2008, I was busking on Broadway till my job started in 6 weeks. I was playing slide on my 36 Gibson Electric Hawaiian. Little Jimmy Dickens walks up. I think I was riffing off In My Time of Dying by Zeppelin on a little Roland battery powered twin. He watched my hands for about 5 minutes. He gave me $20 and told me to keep it up. He then headed up to John Rich's private club.

On opening acts, I heard George Jones once tell Randy Travis, (George was getting on in age, Randy was at his peak,) they were doing an intimate setting show for what I believe might have been a TV special. The conversation got around to opening or closing shows, and George tells Randy " Any more the glory of closing these shows don't mean nothin' to me". "At my age I can get on, get off, go home, watch a football game, go to bed, have a snack". That was ages ago but I always remember it. At first I thought well that was kinda dumb. But now the older I get I now get where ol' George was coming from.

When Bobby Whitlock and Eric Clapton were rehearsing for the Dominoes Tour in the UK in the '70's. Kevin Harrington was working for them. He mentioned Kevin in his post this week but couldn't remember his last name. He said, 'he was the guy holding the lyric cards for Lennon on the roof'. I told them about your interviews with Kevin. especially the one about the Stones disaster.

A lot of great conversation here. As far as Waylon goes I remember reading in his book that he was ready to leave the music industry after Buddy passed away. I don’t remember what he said about getting into the music industry and how Buddy affected that. As far as Neil goes- he definitely has delved into many different genres of music. I don’t think there are too many fans of his that like everything he did. Some love the folk and country stuff, others like the grungy material, etc. He has enjoyed mixing it up and acquiring more fans along the way.

Hi Otis. I love the people you are talking about. I met little Jimmy dickens a few times. Super nice guy and really down to earth. It broke my heart when he passed. I met Loretta Lynn at her birthplace in 1993. It wasn't open to the public yet. Herman Webb was sitting on the front porch. He was really nice. I told him how I was a big fan of Loretta Lynn and wanted to see the house she grew up in. We talked 30 to 40 mins and he said come on in and take a look around. I walked in and there sat Loretta. I thought my heart was gonna explode. She stood up and said hello and asked where I was from and made small talk. She had a flannel shirt on and some jeans. She let me take lots of photos and signed alot of things for me. The experience was incredible. Loretta was another one down to earth. I always thought the perfect interview would of been Waylon and Jimmy dickens and Hank Jr. Can you imagine the stories those 3 could tell ? Jimmy talking about HANK Sr. Waylon talking about buddy Holley. And HANK JR talking about all the people he has worked with. And would have to put merle Kilgore with those 3. He carried HANK Sr guitar as a boy and managed BOCEPHUS. I'm a huge Reds fan so GO BENGALS.

Yes Buddy taught Wayland play Bass……and actually the story is that Buddy was trying to the Crickets back out with him& he told Wayland he wanted Him open for him & the Crickets when they went back on Tour. I believe there are a several Interview Videos on YT Wayland talking about that, Wayland also felt bad he wasn’t on that plane & also that he didn’t talk Buddy out of chartering the plane…….J.I. Allison said he felt he could talked Buddy out of the plane that night….who knows but Buddy definitely was a big part of Wayland’s music journey!! Thanks for reposting The Crash site Video!!!! Hey Otis it was a good one today. I've watched the show with Waylon & Neal butch of times and enjoyed everytime. I saw Waylon talking about his time with Buddy Holly. He said he lead a lot from Buddy mostly not to let the suits run over you. Gives a good look at why Waylon pushed for what he wanted and got just that. Your right though I believe Waylon would have made it, but have that connection with Buddy helped I'm sure. Great show love your channel and the story's.

Man I can't believe you just brought up the Blizzard of 78 because my mother got pulled over during it driving through Chicago on the way to Columbus hauling horses because the roads were supposed to be closed. She was 5'3" tall 100lbs soaking wet (under normal circumstances) and pregnant with me. I just told that story last night because someone was telling me she saw a 70yr old woman hauling horses while she was driving in Texas recently.

Buddy Holly had an active roll in promoting Waylon Jennings career early on. In 1958, Holly produced Jennings' first single: "Jole Blon" b/w "When Sin Stops" , which came out on Brunswick in 1959, and later on RCA. The two became fast friends and musical compatriots after meeting each other at a Lubbock radio station in 1955.

Buddy and Waylon had worked together at the radio station doing jingles, the Crickets didnt go on the last tour and Buddy had money tied up that he needed so had to go on tour. the story goes he handed Waylon a bass and told him he had like a week or two to learn it, Waylon later said he realized the bass was just the top four strings of a guitar. So Buddy had Waylon and Tommy Allsup and Carl Bunch on drums, he was the guy that got frostbite . Buddy wanted Tommy to come as Buddy had trouble playing the lead on Its so easy, Tommy had come up with that part for the record.

I never met Loretta, but I did randomly stand next to Willie and Trigger in the wings, but I was standing right next to Willie. Neil was definitely an outlaw. He would have fit right in with the Highwaymen. He's big buddies with Willie doing the Farm Aid shows. The loudest concert I've ever attended was Neil Young solo at the Palace Theater in Louisville, KY. He played 3 acoustic songs and the rest of the show was Neil playing solo electric guitar with the amps turned to 11!...no band, no bass, no drums...just Neil playing Cinnamon Girl at full blast...Who does that?

I’m usually running too late to catch an opening act. However, there’s been countless times that the opener was much better the headliner. Not to throw any shade at Hayes Carll, but he asked Travis Linville to open for his third Old Quarter show, a few months back, & omg, that young man is extraordinarily talented. Funny af, also. I accidentally paid for parking once, in Houston... cost more than any concert I ever attended. Won’t do that again. I’ll walk ten miles, if I have to.

Just a casual listener. I’m curious on your thoughts of his recent stand with Spotify and that ordeal. I think it shows a little immaturity on his part or maybe he needs to feel relevant again? When you said "the crowd might not go with him" I experienced that once at one of Neil's shows a few years ago. He was touring with Lukas Nelson's band, the crowd got restless when he only did a couple of his signature songs right at the beginning of the show, then he drifted in to a number of songs that were basically rants about the Monsanto corporation and how they're killing us all. Which might be true, I'm not a scientist, but he started losing the crowd and then some guy shouted "play Cinnamon Girl". Neil freaked out on the guy, was screaming at him to go home and listen to anything he wants to there, but this is my show, not yours. I love Neil, but I had to agree, it was too much Monsanto and not enough Harvest, the only time I've ever left one of his shows disappointed!

There should never be yelling at a fan who has spent hard earned money for a ticket to the show. Unless they've done something harmful. Otherwise it's pretty uncool.

I don't comment often, but I have to say I love your videos, sotories, and perspective on things. You said Neil Young had kinda the dream career with all the different things he did, but who would you have wanted to hang out with if you had your choice of any musician or band, and any point in their careers? I'll listen to your top 3, or however many you'd like to think through. I know some of the best musicians in history would be a nightmare to be around, especially when they started drinking, so I'd be curious who a guy who knows as much about music as you do would choose. I'd pick Willie because I don't think he'd get blackout drunk and start a bar fight. But I could be wrong. haha.

Go Bengals! My Seahawks had a terrible year. My main love is the Mariners.. Never been to a WS, longest playoff drought of any team in the 4 major American sport leagues. So Reds have them on that! Really dig the videos . Take care.

Hey Otis, I noticed that there was very little (i.e., none) coverage on the death of Don Wilson, guitarist of The Ventures. Every kid in the 60s and 70 starting out on guitar had to learn a Ventures song, and the surf bands included in the punk scene in the 80s worshiped that band. Take care!

Buddy considered Waylon his best friend so he wanted him on tour. Playing bass was the excuse to bring him along.

Go Reds can't wait for spring training Go Bengals. I read once buddy to Waylon to stick to country music. He would of been on Buddy's prizm label.
