I absolutely love your videos. I’m not a watchmaker, I don’t even wear watches. But I love to watch any master craftsman working at what they love, and I like you in particular because of your sense of humor and the little silly bits you put in your videos. I love it that your children are often involved instead of shushed and sent away like most do. And the sweet kindness you seem to treat everything and everyone with. This is a safe place in an uncertain world, and such places become more precious by the day. Thank you for the giggles, and the calm, and the beauty of your art form.🤗🐝❤️

i agree, almost completely. There are a few times when a watch needs to be sympathetically restored, keeping the history and patina. I think in cases of family heirlooms, watches with a significant history (you know the one that stopped a bullet and saved a guy). But a trashed watch that otherwise would be thrown away, restoring it to full glory only makes sense to me. There is no widow to rember how this or that dent or scratch happened. No child to remember "grandpas old worn out watch". In these cases, let the watch start fresh and live its own life. Now this doesn't mean just replace the guts and anything that is "too far gone". This was a perfetct example...he rebuilt that messed up part (im not a watchmake and don't remember the name of the part). but he didn't want to just replace it because it had a special finish. Anyways great video and I liked your comment and agree that many people just cop out by "wanting to keep the integrity." Nah there's a time and place. Peace

As beautiful as they turn out, I think I would get addicted to plating all cases. For some reason I really wanted him to plate that caseback on this one.
@thermmaloverload
@thermmaloverload Жыл бұрын
@@josephiudice8287 I think there is middle ground and "restoration" could be a whole range or spectrum Sentimental watches aside, the finished job needs to be consistent. In this video the case was really bad but the dial was stunning, so fully re-doing the case was a no brainer because it matched the dial. But if a watch dial has a weathered look with lots of 'patina' then fully restoring the case can look weird. My favourite watch is a 1952 Omega and I love that it has had a life of wear on who knows how many wrists. Who am I to erase that. So I think there is a fine line and Nekid nailed it on this video. Whatever he does, it is always exceptional and he is one of my favourite watchmakers. Marshall over at Wristwatch Revival also puts a lot of thought into how far he takes a restoration.

There are watches I have seen over the years that I personally would not give a glance at, let alone think of owning for my own. But then there are watches that go through the hands of someone who cares enough to give it a second life, and then I see a gem. Perhaps, to me, the original watch lacked a sense of life, a sense of purpose, but when it goes through the hands of someone who cares for it, like a lost chick; giving it the respect and nurturing it deserves, It seems more important to me; somehow this second life give it a soul that to my eyes seemed to lack before; now it has life and a story.

What a beautiful timepiece indeed, and that dial is gorgeous even with that slight water damage you can barely see. Thank you for bringing us all these little treasures, my friend. See you on the next adventure, and stay safe.🥰🥰
