You know, when I was in high school my city was doing a horror festival and showing this movie I believed to be a zombie movie, after all that was the overall theme of the festival; so, I decided to take a date to see this weird German film called Nekromantik, you know, no google or prior research, just vibes.

every Edgy Creepypasta Man Movie ever is just... "hey, look at this! it's fucked up!" and the audience either is either repulsed, or goes "uh, yeah. you are correct. that's fucked up." I guess Jorg then thought that, because not everyone was adequately disgusted, he had to do it again. "look at this! again!"

so happy to see this notification, however i do have to inform you that you are NOT the first person to think way too much about nekromantic. i had a bizarre fixation with this movie for a month or so as a teen and tried to write multiple essays about it before having all my friends tell me "nah sorry but this is taking it a bit too far, i don't wanna read this" and giving up. so at least you're the probably the first to actually do something GOOD with thinking about nekromantic too much!

I watched Nekromantik because it was in the video "movies no one should ever watch under any circumstances", so obviously I HAD to watch it. I have not fully recovered from that experience. I did laugh a couple of times though, which might indicate that I had some *problems* even before the fateful viewing.

Reminds me of the story Bog Girl: A Romance by Karen Russell, in which a 15 year old boy finds a corpse preserved for thousands of years in a peat bog, and then proceeds to date said corpse It's actually legitimately great

@@lucyw4195 It was in one of those English textbooks with short stories and excerpts from literature. This textbook also had one of the tamer segments of Angela's Ashes. In hindsight, it's a bit odd to have something like that in a conservative small town high school. The teacher was strange, though.

@Nyx Fears Its been awhile since I've seen Nekromantik 1 and 2 at the Fantasia Festival, but I hope my comment here can add some context to both films. Firstly I honestly feel Jörg Buttgereit is genuinely a good dude. He was at the screenings of Nekromantik, and after each screening he would show a short film that was about his father. It was basically a music video that was a love letter to his dad. I know what your thinking, but it was super wholesome and endearing. From my understanding he is more interested in big monster movies like Godzilla having written a book in German about them. Nekromantik 1 and 2 are not the only films about death he has made. Death King is a anthology exploring death and suicide, and Schramm is a film that explores the mind of a serial killer. Both films are much more serious about each subject than Nekromantik, which part 2 of the film series was already starting to do. It seemed to me that he made all these films to exorcise these dark thoughts from his psyche. Much like anyone that looks into these topics you read a newspaper article where you find a story about dark and troubling things. You ask yourself why, and you go down a rabbit hole trying to figure that out. In the case of Nekromantik series it was exploring necrophiliacs. I don't think the films do a great job, but I do believe they should be classified as art. In fact there is a journalist/festival programmer named Kier-La Janisse that wrote an essay about the films that got the movies classified as art, and un-banned in Vancouver. I would say that at surface level there doesn't seem to be much there (especially with all the intentional humor and shock), but dig a bit deeper and there is merit in the material. The thing that turns a lot of people off is the animal cruelty, which I find odd because most of the people I've talked to about it eat meat. If I remember correctly both scenes from each film were animals being prepared for food. I'm surprised it took you this long to cover this film, but if you have any questions maybe I can answer them. However I think doing a little research will answer most of your questions. Going in cold was a good idea though as your reaction was priceless. Jörg Buttgereit is a pretty interesting dude, and there are things I didn't even cover about him like his legal battle with the WB, or the rest of his work that I remember even less. One thing I do remember at this moment is that Jörg Buttgereit created the films as a push back towards the German film industry, and their reluctance to support alternative film genre.
