In 1986, the Williams Formula 1 team should have taken the World Championship, but their drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell decided to turn on each other instead. But how did the son of a Brazilian doctor become one of the most controversial names in Formula 1 history? What was it that catapulted a young Nelson Piquet into the international spotlight so soon after his first-ever go-kart race? Was the bias against him legitimate, or was it the product of a nationalistic media playing favorites? Today on Past Gas, we're delving into all things Nelson Piquet.

James: your beat boxing is annoying, Nolan. Also James, cuts others off and does his comedy bits when they are trying to read the script every other minute in the past.

Tennis is boring until you start to play and slowly realize how many layers there are to the ability. Just in one year I thought I understood the forehand like 6 or 8 times. Each time I’d reach a slightly better level and then find out that I so had so much to learn in order to optimize the stroke fully. It really does take the whole body and mind to play at a high level

4:58 As a German, what Max is saying here is the big Problem of Germans always being shown to sound like angry Austrian Painter in US Movies, TV Shows etc etc. Because German when speaking normally is insanely smooth, just check out Songs like "Wir sind Helden - Aurelie" or some German Talk Shows. Now to be fair, i can't blame Max for that, because before i started to watch American Media/Movies/TV i always thought Americans all sound like some over the top "gurgling wors" insane Southern Cowboy Accent. Basically sound to a German like someone who'S drunk and has a ton of jelly in his mouth haha. So yeah, Foreign Languages (no matter where you're from) will always be shown wrongly to you in your own Media than if you start watching Media from that specific Country. The Netflix German Series "Dark" f.e. Lots of Americans reacted to it like "Wow, i didn't realise german can sound so soft and nice." Either way, great Podcast as usual! Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps

So I'm listening to this episode right now on Amazon music and normally I don't have to turn up the volume past 30 but today with this episode I have to turn the volume up to 50 so I think there's some kind of recording issue I thought maybe it had something to do with the background music at the beginning and so I was thinking oh the music's loud so you're not going to hear them very well but then after the whole intro I thought the volume would go back to normal cuz the sound got really loud and then when it started to play the podcast volume went back to really low so I don't know what you guys have to do to adjust this but I'm just letting you know

As a Brazilian who grew up in the 90's Senna had a giant PR machine with rede globo who at that time controlled 90% of Brazilian news and entertainment media. In my humble opinion Piquet was the most complete driver, he worked on his own cars, helped Gordon Murray develop the active suspension on williams and so on. On the "racist" statement, he was not racist at all. In Brasília, which is the capital of Brasil, we use the word "neguinho" the same as dude or to refer an unknown group of people(they). Lewis used a literal translation of the word to make up his mind. At that time Piquet just happened to be a supporter of the former Brazilian president, jair Bolsonaro, therefore disliked by the media and this nonsense gained traction. The guy is not racist at all.

This is nice context but you can't really deny Nelson Piquet is a bit of a dickhead, he called Senna the f-word and butted heads with lots of guys and had no reason to talk shit to Lewis to begin with.

@@presinald he is, but he's also authentic. In 1988 we had a tv show called roda viva whereas Senna told the panel that Piquet had been abused in his childhood which was a lie. He also told Piquet went to the U.S because he hated Brasil, which happens to also be a lie. From that moment Piquet got furious and started spreading rumours that senna was gay. However Senna had a PR machine to clean his mess and look like the good guy
