A lot of people asked me to play the song slower and for tips on how to play it, I even helped some of you on Instagram. These are some tips that I think might help. just wanted to let you know that Jesus Christ loves you so much no matter what you done or been through. and He will save us from our sins if we put our faith and trust in Him! because we all sinned and fell short of Gods perfect glory (romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is eternal death! "for there is no difference between Jew and Gentile - the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." so God is coming at a time we least expect, and if we put our faith and trust in Him He will gift us His grace and clothe us with the righteousness of His blood (but of course death could not hold Him, He is risen!) and we will have eternal life in His kingdom where there will be there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying. there will be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. because He loves you so much! (romans 5:6-8) but if we deny and reject Him and don't repent from our sins to follow God, then we will have our part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. because no liar, no thief, no blasphemer (using Gods name in vain as a cuss word to express anger or disgust) and no adulterer (Jesus Christ says in matthew 5 that anyone who just looks at someone to lust for they’re an adultery at heart) will enter the kingdom of heaven. so hear these words, repent and believe the gospel! accept Jesus Christ and confess your sins to Him so that He will forgive you and give you a life with truth and real love and joy and peace that this world can never give you or fulfill in you you! and the love and joy and peace that He will give you will never fade away or perish. this is all if you haven't done this yet and Jesus Christ hasn't saved you yet, also when you have time please you should watch this channel on youtube called "Christ forgiveness ministries" and hear what they have to say, glory to God. Yeah! Basically you just pluck it the first time, and slap it the second time. That way you’re combining the slapping with the bassline. With practice you won’t even think about it.

Excellent. I've been messing with this tune for years. Actually strained the ulnar nerve in my left hand/thumb, so obsessed and trying for hours-on-end. I was just doing everything wrong. This the best tutorial I've seen.

Thanks, this video is very helpful with my greatest ever musical ambition and challenge , I had a wee go at this about 8 years ago when I first discovered JM but got nowhere quickly, found the chord shapes extreme for my medium hand size. But after practicing many of his other songs my left hand has become more compliant so I bought another guitar which will be left in 'Neon' tuning probably for eternity or until I get it🙃 At approaching my 66th birthday I feel like I know that every learning process is exponential with the rewards increasing leaps and bounds with every practice session, I attribute this to the nature of everything { Fibonacci number sequence, or Golden ratio } and the natural way that learning works if you persevere after you think you've no chance and should give up. Anyway JM has already helped me to realise that it's my right hand that's important. Cheers and thanks again👍

A while back I noticed a lot of covers of Neon people would be continuing slapping all the time on C, and it really irritates the sound of the bassline. I thought I was the only one who found it way off. Thank you for sharing this, it really helps for those in need for the picking part!

exactly! people usually slap all the time or don't slap at all. And that's an essential part of the technique because it's a percussive style.

This is by far the best version and tutorial of this song on KZfaq. Question for you, do you have any tips on how to modify the right hand pattern for the Pre-Chorus when he sings "She comes and she goes...". Thanks!

What I noticed from that part is that he worries about accentuating the bass notes along with the singing.. “she COmes and GOes and, COmes and GOes like, NO one CAme”. What I mean by that is, hit (I mean slap) the 6th string harder where the capital letters are. I may upload a video later with the rest of the song.. but I don’t have an acoustic guitar anymore :(

Mayer plays this song lots of different ways. He does different things with the bass line as you mentioned, but in the original recording from Room for Squares, and in his earlier live performances he sometimes played the 2nd to last chord in the riff (Abadd9) as a 16th note triplet, either via a finger rake or fingerstyle plucking....I'm not sure exactly. Also in the Room for Squares version in the later verses he just plays the riff rhythmically with four fingers plucking the chords. It's been interesting to see this one evolve over the years. Thanks for the good tutorial. Could you let me know what model your guitar is? I mean it seems a bit small compared to regular model, so I would like to know whether this is true. I practiced a little and Neon seems to need a massive hand, especially thumb :)

It's a taylor BT2, the "baby" model. And yes, having big hands makes it a lot easier to make the chord shapes... Although I still can't do what John does on the verse of stop this train, so I imagine his hands are even bigger lol

I’m playing the chords in a different shape, so should I try the shapes you are using? I learned it by ear and play it with four fingers so I want to learn the correct way but idk if I should change technique of my left hand as well

you want to try playing those bass notes with the thumb, as hard as it is, it keeps the main riff tight and groovy. Good luck!

What I'm confused about is sometimes when you hit the string for the snare effect you also play the note at the same time, and other times you hit and hold the snare with no note?

You just slap with your thumb.. it’s exactly like a bass slap.

@@jotaguisc yeah I checked out a few bass tutorials and managed to get the sound but it's not exactly that technique is it? It's more like an aggressive stab since the the thumb rests on the a string after (unlike a bass slap where the thumb bounces back)
