This is a 20+ minute spoken walkthrough of the extremely cool new midi sequencer AUv3 ‘Neon’ by Aaron Meyers. Only 5 bucks, highly recommended if you like interesting sequencers, despite a few niggles which I express in the vid. Only works on iPad and M1+ Macs, btw - not available for iPhone.
AppStore: apps.apple.com/app/neon/id647...
🟪 Super Important:
I make crazy little from KZfaq (it works out at around £3 per 1000 views - yes, that low, and niches like iOS music get very few views per vid). Patreon & Buy Me a Coffee are good ways to help me keep this channel going:
I have giveaways, exclusive vids, preset packs, samples, field recordings, AUM sessions, etc., and occasional group voice chats on my Patreon. You can join for as little as $5-basically the cost per month of a coffee or a beer. The top Patreon tier ($10) even has lots of desktop plugin giveaways. You can get a warm glow from supporting me while getting nice things in return. Everyone who’s a member there absolutely loves it. Come join us! Currently only 25 paying members, guys, I really, really need more support to be able to keep doing this with any regularity and commitment. Thank you!
🟡 Check it out at patreon.com/Gavinski
One-off donations are also gratefully received. Donations and Patreon memberships are really the only chance I have of getting compensated fairly for my work here, so I really appreciate donations:

Yeah, I can see me using this a lot - really hope the change I suggested regarding how desirable it would be to select an object from the scrollable list only when you release your finger gets implemented
@MultiMam12345
@MultiMam12345 3 ай бұрын
@@GavinskisTutorialsits really simple. A tap and drag gesture is problematic when the list is too long.. Because this turns a quick selection gesture into a painful one. It's not a gesture for repetitive actions long lists I think in general that swipe only works repetitive when there is no fine selection needed. Its just a bad gesture for repetitive selection actions. It will burn you out in the same why we don't click and drag a mouse to move it through a list. A touch device does not mean repetitive strain injury does not exist. But it's a brilliant app. Apps that are visually intens needs a reduce motion. Devs need to consider visual feedback and neurodivergent brains a lot more. This app is super intuitive. Easy to get in a flow state. But the intens visuals cancel out the flow state. Especially when the background is dark. Be subtle with the strobing led elements😂 Until you try to select a scale or get anxious by the chaotic motion.

Extremely musical! Needs a few UI tweaks I think, mentioned in the vid, things that would be easy to implement too, but it is very well thought out in general, and enjoyable to use.

I see the iPad as a performance instrument more than a daw, so it's always a pity to see apps that aren't optimised for performance. Hopefully the dev will make some changes!

Cool app, very deep, nice looking UI, mesmerizing really to see dance of lights. ;) (Ok, that might be a little distracting.) I second your suggestions regarding the selection, especially for live performance. About the likelyhood options or trigger conditions: I think 1:2 means that every first time out of two the step plays, 2:2 means every second time out of two and so on. I know the elektron devices have these kind of conditions also...

looks cool. Maybe the difference between random and shuffle is that random could theoretically pick the same step more than once, but shuffle would pick a new step each time? Just a guess.

Hey Gav! I think the whole selection thing you point out is critical. Yet, ironically, the opposite could also be useful (that is, how it is already configured). I think what would make the most sense would be to have an audition toggle which lets you define whether the selection should act as you want or alternatively as it already does (to try out scales). Cheers bud

@DeineHeileOma

@@GavinskisTutorials I have thought about it and find the whole concept of scrolling through the scales unsuitable. I think the best thing would be a switch that, if desired, changes the scrolling to a full-page view, where you can discover and virtually "play" the many scales with your finger like on an XY-pad, but you can also tap them specifically and thus select them directly.
@GavinskisTutorials
@GavinskisTutorials 3 ай бұрын
@DeineHeileOma sounds great, tell the dev. Yes the features have been well thought out but certain UI aspects like this simply aren't fit for purpose, no question about it. Lack of ability to jump to specific non-adjacent values is a really major bummer for live performance.

Nice concept and layout, but the CPU usage is horrible. On an my iPad M1 with a AUM project already running at 50% DSP opening Neon creates +10% in background and UI open brings the DSP to MAX

The scale scroll was my first noticeable complaint as well. Otherwise the sequencer is lovely. I always love any app with a RANDOM feature too though. That be a great addition for pure generative lifestyles
@GavinskisTutorials
@GavinskisTutorials 3 ай бұрын
Yes! But what it could also use really is a way to just randomise entire sequences, or to randomise various aspects of the sequence. So although the playhead can jump about in different flavours of random, I think there is a lot of room for more random here 🤔
@IwatoHyena
@IwatoHyena 3 ай бұрын
@GavinskisTutorials that's exactly what i would like. Im a big fan of a random button. You should put that idea in his ear. Another aspect when i saw the developers demo, before you made this one, He didnt cover the presets tab so i just assumed like 90% of apps it would come pre-loaded with a few to help get a better taste for the potential of the sequencer and it does not. My 3 minor gripes, but for a $5 app in an age where suddenly apps are $10 or more for something with all these features, I can't complain, really. He's a new developer, so hopefully, he keeps improving and inventing. Great walk-through as always. Helped me clarify a few portions i was unsure of.

@IwatoHyena cheers N, I already passed those ideas on to him yesterday, lack of presets was a strange omission. I know a dev might think, it's just a sequencer, doesn't need presets, but I disagree! Helps quickly inspire ppl and give them a base for noodling right out of the box
