Nepal's Failing International Airport Projects

Expectations were sky-high when Nepal opened two new international airports in Pokhara and Bhairahawa. The government took on heavy loans from China to build the Pokhara International Airport as well as a loan from the Asian Development Bank for Gautam Buddha International Airport, hoping to attract tourists and foreign investment. But a year after opening, neither airport has seen regular international flights. Nepal's national carrier doesn't have enough planes and foreign airlines aren't interested. Now the country struggles to repay the massive loans while the airports remain largely unused. A classic case of how big dreams, mismanagement, and China's debt trap diplomacy led Nepal's impressive new infrastructure to the brink of failure.

It is not such a stupid idea if Nepal integrates well with Indian economy. All these airports need is flights from India. If those Nepali airports are located close to Indian border then Indians can take flights to Nepal and take bus to cities in India. Nepal needs to abandon China.

However, if All your neighbors hate you, you are definitely the problem. India IS the problem. For example, 1) Maldives wanted "india out" 2) 2015 Nepal blockade and the indian annexation of Kalapani from Nepal on year 1962 3) Afghan embassy in India shuts down 4) 2001 Bangladesh-India border clashes, 5) Chinese and Bhutanese officials wrap up new round of border talks and agree to work towards formal diplomatic relations? India? 6) 2013 indian Annexation of Moreh from Myanmar 7) Tensions between India and Sri Lanka are on the rise as Sri Lankan fishermen complain of continued bottom trawling and overfishing by Indian? 8) Pakistan conflict with india is well documented. They don't see eye to eye. 9) india tried to invade China through forward policy and tried to play victim on year 1962 war? India tried to block the Henderson Brooks and Neville Maxwell report when it was leaked momentarily in year 2014 on the internet? Why? Something to hide?

@@RamKshetry But Hating on Nepal is so low from Indian side. Our Nepali brother is still serving them in Kashmir border. In fact, my father did 24+ year indian Army service and I still got my own brother and uncle in Indian Army. India hating on Pakistan makes sense because they enemy or China hating on Taiwan/Japan makes sense, USA hating on Russia makes sense. BUT India hating and stopping Nepal progress and frequently doing economic blockages and sometime not supporting Nepal in international stage doesn't make sense at all. Nepal has always supporting India in UN voting, supported India in war with Pakistan by allowing extra hiring of Nepalese youth, allowed nepal land to use in war with China too.

The way these airports are constructed, there is some politics for sure. But what is done is done, there is huge debt in Nepals part. Hence we are not only Landlocked but Airlocked as well ! India knows this and is using this vulnerability as a bargaining chip to extract concessions in any negotiation. India will happily approve ILS and new entry routes if Indian companies get to operate Nepals airport. With this they will have control of our airspace and will have the power to apporve any sort of activities through the airport.

@@Rav01508 Just like every militarily powerful nation on earth? India is doing nothing wrong. It's just minding it's own business and getting diplomatically stronger. We have all seen what China has done in Africa, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Seeing this, Javier, the president of Argentina cancelled all Chinese projects. Their economy is much more stable and sustainable thanks to that step. India was able to free it's 8 naval officers FROM DEATH SENTENCE in Qatar thanks to these steps. We also saw what happened to Maldives as soon as they decided to try and fuck around with India. If India wants to develop diplomatically, some tough steps need to be taken. Even the US or China (west Taiwan) took some tough diplomatic steps in order to develop. That is the advantage India has by being 50 years behind US and China (west Taiwan). You are just jealous of a developing India like other communists bro. Admit it. We have seen that democracy in Nepal has UTTERLY FAILED. India went from a sleeping giant to a working elephant, in 10 years, that it. Atal setu, Ram mandir in ayodhya, Ram mandir in Dubai, Ram mandir in New Jersey, these could only happened because of the strong diplomacy that India follows. We all see how the west tried to force India to not buy Russian oil, but utterly failed to do so. India is the leading manufacturer of E-Scooters. The government also has plans to bend foreign companies to make in India, like TESLA. You guys as of right now are TERRIBLE in diplomacy. A person like Balen Shah would be a great diplomat. Also, try capitalism instead of socialism. India could develop so much in so little time due to our government's capitalistic nature. Just a few years ago people were driving old Maruti's. Now every second household has a thar or a Benz in their garage. Everything is not perfect in this government, but it is the best we got.

@@Rav01508 Yes, but countries have their own geographical strategies. Both china and india take nepal as a buffer state. India has lots of border issues on the northern side, for which it has to spend a big chuck of its GDP on military deployment, thats why india’s GDP per capita is low despite of being 4th largest economy in the world. Nepal being a neutral state is keeping off both india and china from border disputes in around 1389 km. And both our neighbors wanna have our control so that they could have advantage over the other in case a war breaks out between them, thats why usa also wants its presence here. China india USA all are having good terms when it comes to their economy, they just want to have control over small country like Nepal to use it according to their policies and interest, which eventually creates next ukraine. China and india both are eyeing aviation and hydropower of our country rest every thing we are witnessing is its consequences. It seems like india is bargaining the bid regarding proposal to manage all four international airports with the western air entry route. It’s all geopolitics let’s wait until Modi’s next visit to Nepal !

Good Informative Video Do Keep It Up & Ongoing For The Betterment Of Nepal's Nepalese Pupils. My Question Is Why Too Much Airport Mega Project In Nepal, Isn't It Unnecessary For A Small Nation Like Us Or Are There Fishy Corruption Big Lagre Material Inside It ? Why ? We The Nepal's Nepalese People Don't Want Any Type Of Airport Project For 2 / 3 Decade. BackOff To Adani Group For The Lease Of Airport Cause It Will Cost To Us More & More Expensive In Each Months. BackOff Off To Corruption. The Corrupted High Rank PolicyMakers Must Be In Jail For Long Years. Besides Of Airport Mega Project The Amount Money Should Be Used Other Important Sector That Are Directly Related To Common People, Health Insurance More Coverage, Education Without Politcs Influence, Road Maintenance Etc Etc But Not In Airport Project. Enough Is Enough In Airport Project, It Should Be Stop.

Dont you think adani would seek profits from airports after investing in loss facing airports? And profits can only be made with running airports and not the dead ones. Adani could also get the necessary permissions to operate the ILS in GBIA and even try to access newer entry points with its direct ties to BJP. This would help both the new airpots to atleast operate to its bare minimum potential. Running these dying and debt-filled airports must be a greater priority by any means. Yes, Nepal Government must be thorough with the terms and policies, there must be a neck to neck tie-up where customers aren't looted and the debt trap Nepal would face is also eradicated. Lets consider the positive aspect too. FDIs could help boom Nepal's falling economy. Nepal made a big mistake already and is facing huge crisis. It is high time for damage control.

▪︎There are seven exit air route points-Bhairahawa and Mahendranagar in the west and Simara, Biratnagar, Tumlingtar, Kakkarbhitta and Janakpur in the east-for aircraft flying out of Nepal. ▪︎Two other entry points over Mechi and Tumlingtar (to the east of Mt.Everest) have been designated for planes coming from Bhutan and Lhasa. But the entry point in Simara is used by the majority of aircraft flying into Nepal and is,therefore congested most of the time. ▪︎The two international airports in Bhairahawa and Pokhara are said to be technically unfeasible without entry routes from the west. ▪︎For example, if a Bhairahawa-bound international flight approaching from the west is not allowed to use the airspace over Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj or Mahendranagar, it has to make a 300-km detour and enter Nepali airspace over Simara. This roundabout route to Gautam Buddha International Airport will raise the operating cost of airlines and make flights costlier. ▪︎International flights to Pokhara will face the same problem. Pokhara-bound international flights from western Nepal will have to cover an additional 185 km in aerial distance if the new cross-border air routes are not opened. ▪︎Nepal requested for an approval of a high-altitude additional air entry route from Mahendranagar since 2009. ▪︎In May 2022 when visiting Indian Prime Minister Modi overflew and did not land in the new international airport in Bhairahawa when he was visiting lumbini. ▪︎India refused to give operating authorisation to Buddha Air to fly to Lucknow from Pokhara saying it was a “diplomatic issue" ▪︎India has been withholding landing permits for Himalaya Airlines to fly to New Delhi since 2015 as it is owned by a Chinese company. India is also clear that it will not buy Nepal’s electricity if a hydro project in Nepal has a Chinese component. The airport’s a similar case. ▪︎These two airports have become victims of geopolitics as Pokhara airport was built with Chinese money and Bhairahawa airport was built by a Chinese firm. The possibility of getting the route is slim if we look at all these geopolitical developments. ●Funfact: India's trade with china last year recorded $136 billion dollars. Narendra Modi while he was Gujarat chief minister, Beijing hosted Modi thrice. On each occasion, he returned with commitments of greater Chinese investment in Gujarat. Modi's bussiness dealings and investment from china was the highest among the indian states. !Conclusion: India can do trade and bussiness with china but nepal is not allowed to do bussiness with china? I sense a double standard hypocrite neighbour that tried to spinoff nepal's relation with china as an insecure approach. Nepal is a sovereign and independent country that have needs and does whats best for its people.
