Get rituals, one of which is find familiar
@MatticusScotticus6 жыл бұрын
So there is no confusion, when they were saying Book of Shadows at the end, they meant the Book of Ancient Secrets Invocation. It's basically a much more potent Ritual Caster feat, and you don't have to worry about losing your spellbook because you can just conjure it during a short rest again.
@MatticusScotticus6 жыл бұрын
This is actually the exact class I'm using right now too, and it's beautiful. I rolled for my stats and got a little lucky, so I only need 4 ASI to build an optimal build. Normally you'd want to split at an ASI level to max out ASI potential, but in my case, the extra invocation at warlock level 5 is more important than the extra feat or ASI I could otherwise get at 16 sorcerer. And as far as control goes, repelling blast is great, but grasp of hadar is equally as powerful. These invocations specifically say you CAN move the targets of eldritch blast, not that you have to, meaning you can choose to push them or pull them if you take both invocations. If you set up environmental hazards (like caltrops, ball bearing, cloud of daggers, etc) you can literally push a target through those hazards and force saving throws (if there even is a saving throw), and then subsequently pull them right back through and again, force saving throws.

Book of Ancienct Secrets is the invocation that allows you to record ritual spells into your Book of Shadows.

There is an additional difference between Vicious Mockery and Frostbite. Vicious Mockery specifies "the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn" and Frostbite specifies "the next weapon attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn." So, if you target a caster with Frostbite (because they probably have a weaker Con save than Wis), you will not reduce the accuracy of their cantrip or spell attacks that do not involve a weapon. And a spell that uses a save bypasses both effects.

no dm will let you use mold earth that way, they will make loose earth mean what ever they want, essentially making the cantrip a wasted cantrip you took just to fuck you over. doesnt matter that the spell was designed for it.

To note, the average time for a human being to suffocate is around 7 minutes. That would mean 70 rounds in an encounter. Effectively losing your buddy for that long. Just for a human being, not sure how it would translate to other beings.

My current character has 8 cantrips at lvl 3. Lvl1 bard, warlock, and sorcerer. Warlock gives me hexblade, which means that I am suddenly proficient with medium armor, shields, and martial weapons, and my martial weapon works with my charisma instead of str or dex. It also gives me booming blade cantrip. Which means that in the unlikely event that something gets near me, I can hit it with a +6 1d8+4 (with an extra 1d8 if they move. so that cancels a weakness. It also gives me eldritch blast, which at lvl 2 will also get +4. So that one level basically means I have options for defense, melee offense, and ranged offense. So sorcerer, sorcerer gives me 4 cantrips, and "divine soul" means I can choose them from either the sorcerer or cleric spell list. giving me a lot of options. And bard gives me 2 from the bard spell list. He's more of a buffer than a controller, but here is the list he has: Vicious mockery (wis save, 1d4 + disadvantage, psy dam) Frostbite ( con save, 1d6 +disadvantage cold dam) Acid splash( dex save, 1d6 on 2 characters, acid) Minor illusion Eldritch blast (vs AC) booming blade (for melee) Resistance Guidance Will get a few more cantrips later on to make it more controlly, but I already love the versatility.

I am playing something similar in my next campaign. Or rather he's just a Conjuration Wizard, but I have a total of six cantrips at level 3. Two of those are from the Mark of Making (It's an Eberron variant option for Human), and one is a bonus that the DM gave me for my backstory. I didn't get Eldritch Blast because it doesn't really fit with my character's theme very well (I'm playing him as a conjurer that focuses on summoning and elemental magic), but I took Frostbite and Shocking Grasp.

Love this idea, and want to build it out as a sorcerer. Trying to decide if it's better to be a half-elf to get Charisma bonus and Darkvision (so I don't have to take the Light cantrip), or choose variant human for the Magic Initiate Feat at level 1. :-/
@Horkslair6 жыл бұрын
Warlock Devil's Sight invocation is better than darkvision imo. 120' range, AND they can see colors and can see in magical darkness that will affect those with darkvision. My gold dragonborn warlock took pact of the tome and druid Primal Savagery cantrip to go with his dragonborn feat dragonhide that lets him get a claw melee attack. If something gets in close and he is forced to melee, he is able to put some major hurt on whoever comes in to thrash him. At 5th level he does ((d4+strength)+(2d10 poison)) damage on a unarmed strike attack, or he can stand off at range and sling a pair of agonizing eldritch spear(s) out to 300' range for a d10+cha bonus each. Pretty versatile for a 5th level character. Now all he really needs is the quicken metamagic feat so he can always have his primal savagery going every round.

Don't forget the swine soul siphoner! for each and every boar you kill you collect 1 swine soul within the swine soul siphoner, up to a maximum of 65,340,285 souls. you can then add these captured souls as damage to the damage dealt by a cantrip. Meaning that the dreaded swine soul siphoner can let you hit something with a cantrip that deals 65,340,285 damage! perfect magic item for a cantrip user with too much time on their hands.

When you take repelling blast does the push back always take effect, i.e. fighting a giant or larger creatures? Second question does the repelling blast always have to take effect, i.e. you have them in an advantageous position on the battlefield and just want to hit them with eldritch blast without the push back?
@Nurk0m0rath6 жыл бұрын
The exact wording of the invocation is "When you hit a creature with eldritch blast, you can push the creature up to 10 feet away from you in a straight line." Which implies that yes, you can control it, and no, there is no maximum size. It also puts no limit on the number of times per turn that you can perform the push, so technically at 17+ with quicken spell you could hit 4 times per cast and cast twice per turn for a total of 80ft of push that can be spread about as you like and nothing is immune to being pushed around. The UA reverse of it limits you to 1 pull per turn, so you can't just yoyo enemies around with that (imagine how devastating that would be, pushing enemies back and forth through a vortex of whirling blades ...) but even just with the pushing power, that can get insane if you can fight in narrow passages with locational damage spells like spike growth or hadar's grasp.

@Nerdarchy6 жыл бұрын
Sophie M O'Connell I guess the biggest thing is do you think the game will go all the way to level 20. Many don't. That would make the decision making much easier. The other thing is you will get more use out of the lower level abilities longer.

That makes a lot of sense! I was definitely erring more towards going for a level three dip, I think it'll be a little more fun and flexible. I thought a spell casting barbarian was a cool idea so i thought I would try to make one myself. Please critique the abilities and descriptions as I would like to know if this is balanced enough. Anyways, here it is. Path of the Rage Mage: Few barbarians walk down the path of the Rage Mage. Rage Mages connect with the divine power of nature to receive their magical abilities. Rage Mages tear through their enemies during their destructive fits of anger. With the help of magic bolstering their combat prowess, they can take out even the most hardy of foes with the deadly combination of weapon, and magic. Spellcasting: Beginning when you choose this path at level 3, you unlock the ability to cast spells. The Rage Mage's spellcasting list follows the Eldritch Knight although it does not receive cantrips. You pick your spells from the Druid spell list and pick from the conjuration and evocation schools. Your spell casting stat is wisdom, as you receive magic through the power of nature. Your spell casting focus is your weapon, although you can only have one weapon as your focus at a time and it takes a 1 hour ritual to bond with the weapon and make it your spell casting focus. Wild Adept: Beginning at 3rd level, your spell casting skills have become revered by other barbarians. Your magic is powerful enough that it can overcome the mindless rage of a barbarian. You can now cast spells while raged, although you cannot concentrate on spells. Battle Magic: At 6th level, you have learned how to swiftly switch from spell casting to physical combat quick enough to get a strike in after you have cast a spell. When you use an action to cast a spell, you can take a bonus action to make a melee weapon attack with your spell focus, your bonded weapon. You may use this equal to your wisdom modifier. Call of Nature: At 10th level, you have become so closely tied to nature that it will sometimes answer your calls of help and try to correct your failures. When you fail a wisdom check, you may re-roll the dice, using the new roll. You cannot re-roll a re-roll. You may use this ability a number of times equal to your wisdom modifier, minimum of once, per long rest. You receive all expended uses at the end of a long rest. Magic Burst: At 14th level, your ability to enter mindless states of anger and rage has become enhanced and intertwined with your magical powers. When you use a bonus action to enter a rage, you can cast a spell that has a casting time of one action as a part of you entering the rage. You can use this ability equal to half proficiency bonus, rounded up. You regain all expended uses after a long rest. Thanks for reading. Please tell me what you like about it, what is too weak, what is too strong and what is just right. Thanks again. EDIT Please tell whether I should include concentrating on spells while raging, I'm not sure about it but I'd like to get some more opinions, and also whether the 14th ability, Magic Burst, should be tweaked and is too good or too bad.
@nathanmitchell76636 жыл бұрын
I had a similar idea except I drew inspiration from the Bloodrager class from Pathfinder to create my spellcasting Barbarian. Where it says Bloodrager spellcasting table, that table shows spell and spell slot progression identical to the Eldritch Knight and Sorcery Point progression equal to half that of the Sorcerer. Here it is, let me know what you think :) While many combatants can tap into a ferocious rage, Bloodragers have intrinsic arcane power flowing through their veins, usually from having a powerful mage as an ancestor. Having such power ingrained so deeply into their lineage, it tends to manifest in such a way that it augments the Rage bubbling just beneath the surface and also allows a limited form of spellcasting into the bargain. Blood Casting (3rd) The arcane power in your veins manifests in the form of limited spellcasting that works during Rage. You learn spells as detailed in the Spells Known column of the Bloodrager spellcasting table. These spells come from the Sorcerer spell list. Your spellcasting stat for these spells is Charisma. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability and for calculating your Spell Save DC and your Spell Attack Modifier. Only your Bloodrager spells can be cast during Rage. Spell Save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier Spell Attack Modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier Font of Magic (3rd) You gain two Sorcery Points, as detailed in the Sorcery Points column of the Bloodrager spellcasting table. You can use them as the Sorcerer would use them, as detailed on page 95 of the PHB. Intimidating Prowess (6th) Once per short rest, as a bonus action while Raging, you may let out a loud roar laced with magical energy. Make an Intimidation check, each creature that can hear you within 30ft of you must make an opposed Wisdom saving throw against it. On a failed save, a creature is frightened of you for a minute. On a successful save, a creature is immune to this feature for 24 hours. A creature may repeat the saving throw at the end on each of its turns to end the effect. Metamagic (10th) Choose one Metamagic option as detailed on page 96 of the PHB. You gain the ability to use it as the Sorcerer would. Arcane Bloodrage (14th) When you go into a Rage, you may choose one spell you know that requires concentration. By spending a spell slot equal to the level of the spell, you gain the effects of the spell for the duration of your Rage, as if you were concentrating on it.
