A discussion of the Bene Gesserit voice and how the sisterhood skillfully uses it to impose their will. Spoiler warning if you haven’t read Frank Herbert’s Dune series. Over the many thousands of years since its founding, the sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit sought to further enhance their own natural abilities to the point of appearing to be supernatural to onlookers. Perhaps the most notable of these powers is the ability to control others through the careful manipulation of sound frequencies called the voice.

Do we all remember the terrifying feeling when our mothers yelled at us using our first, middle and last name? OK, now you've got an inkling of what Voice is.
@AaronLitz
@AaronLitz Жыл бұрын
Pretty dang close; _Voice_ is the ultimate tone of command, where the speaker's words are just so full of authority (as determined by the Bene Gesserit's observations of the person and exactly what kind of tone the individual will best respond to) that you just _automatically_ do as you're told, before you're able to think about or even _be aware of_ what you're doing. _Voice_ goes straight to your subconscious and you obey without thinking. I liked how the new movie showed people basically blanking out and coming to right after they'd done what they were told, like they were going on automatic when they responded to _Voice._ A fast, forceful hypnotic suggestion. The scene where the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam uses _Voice_ to command Paul to come to her is maybe the best portrayal, how he just sort of blacks out and then he's suddenly at her feet. In Lynch's movie it portrayed people struggling against doing what they were told by _Voice,_ like they were aware of it and fighting some kind of overt mind control as if it were magic or telepathy, which I did not like at all. I think that's where he got the idea for the "Weirding Modules" because he thought it was all voice magic, and because he refused to show the advanced Bene Gesserit and Fremen martial arts because he's a snob who "didn't want to make a kung fu movie." (because having martial arts in a movie _obviously_ makes it low brow and bad, right?)

I always loved the idea that using the Voice well requires you to have heard the target speak, the more the better, and superb control to pitch your Voice in just the right way to affect them. I interpreted it as "speaking in the voice of their own thoughts," so from their perspective, you didn't command them, they just had an idea, so there's no reason not to follow through with it.

In the books my favourite use of “Voice” was in Children of Dune. When Irulan attempts to use it on Ghanima...and then Ghanima just laughs. It was a nice reminder of how limited Voice can be against someone who knows how to resist it.

poor irulan. She was trained as BG, but was not adept. She born and married into profound power, but had little influence. She was made official historian, and then carefully controlled and censored. She loved the twins, and had only a small role in their lives. She wanted children, and knew paul would never give her any. She even wanted to hate Chani, and in the end admired her. Irulan had such little control in her own life.

Same! That scene solidified my opinion that this is the best live-action interpretation of Lady Jessica to-date. Not only is the scene 'book accurate', but reveals the truly terrifying abilities of the Bene Gesserits that a new audience approaching this material might not understand. I still get chills when I think about it!

See, I thought the Lynch film had the right of it there. Jessica uses the Voice subtly (as opposed to Paul, who's still unpracticed with it), says "There's no need to fight over me," but you hear "fight over me" echo, clearly echoing in her target's mind, making which part of the statement was the command clear.
@ulyx9804
@ulyx9804 Жыл бұрын
It was precisely the opposite of how subtle and manipulative the Voice is supposed to be. She specifically takes advantage of their sexual desires for her, to the point that the last remaining Harkonnen sees Paul as a threat as a male and potential competition for Jessica. She has to bargain with him using the Voice to save Paul.
@ktk44man
@ktk44man Жыл бұрын
@@ulyx9804 exactly my thoughts. I don't know if I missed a description but I don't really imagine the voice as this inhuman sounding monster language, it's more like a masterful use of tone and structure to completely manipulate your opponents psyche, on a nearly subconscious level. I kind of envision it as being like the best orator you possibly can be

The 2021 version of The Voice resonates (haha!) with me more so than the 1984 version. That thopter scene was terrifying and still gives me literal chills when I think about the way Jessica's voice goes almost demonic as she orders the Harkonens to do what they do. It shows the full range of The Voice's capabilities from simple suggestion to out-and-out commands in an extreme way

the newest dune incarnation has the best examples of the voice because they show that during the "hypnosis" effect the listener has no memory of their actions, and suddenly becomes aware after the command is completed, like a jump-cut. also finally a movie shows how the sand-walking without pattern is done. no one else quite figured out how to visually show it until now.

I've always thought of the voice as akin to when a parent speaks to their child to get them to do or not do something. It strikes to the core of how we consider ourselves in relation to authority. I think it might actually be possible for someone to resist the voice if they had never grown up respecting any authority be it parental or otherwise. The problem with this is that The Voice sounds like regular speech to anyone not the target so it's hard to portray. Examples of things that work on similar principals as the voice would be when you ask someone to do a small task for you in order to influence their feelings toward you in a positive way (it makes them unconsciously think "i must have helped this person because i like them) or basically anything a narcissist will do to get their way.

I know it gets crapped on a lot, but I really liked the David Lynch version of Dune (particularly the Alan Smithee version of the same film) and that extends to the representation of The Voice as well. In that version The Voice sounds a little different to let the viewer know it is happening, but they also add the echo as it goes through the "victim's" head as they process it. In the new film The Voice also sounds a little different but the accompanying action of its use is in fast forward making the whole thing seem less like a learned ability or some kind of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and more like some kind of magic trick.

While about to be dumped in the desert to die Lady J is able to un-gag herself and use the Voice to say " you don't have to fight over me" causing the Thopter pilot and guard to immediately go after one another. The use of The Voice in the newest film was exceptional - We got to see Paul's somewhat amateurish use, which quite luckily worked. The we got to see a true master of said skill, in Jessica, compelling the Harkonned to kill each other as well as giving her the means to finish them off. (Then again, all she REALLY needed to do was get loose - even w/out the voice, had she been free she'd have BUTCHERED them.) But the best example in the books was when Thufir was all but accusing her of betraying House Atreides, all the while contemplating killing her on the spot - and she literally FORCED him to sit down and be still. " *I HaVe NoT DiSmiSseD, yOu ThUfIr!* " And while she criticized herself for getting angry enough to do so, it was a SUPREMELY effective show of power - as she stated "If I wanted to kill ANYONE, you could not stop me." Talk about hardcore! Great vid - thanks again, for your efforts.

For me it was in this late Villanueve movie, more than the ScyFi miniseries and Lynch’s movie, the best expression... the best example of this technique. How the screen/time disrupts, but mostly how the reverberations of the sound along side “the voice” shows not what Lady Jessica or the Reverend Mother or even Paul experience... no, we are seeing a third person experience of what the target of the voice experiences. “It’s done”, but with no sense of ever experiencing doing the action requested, just time lost. Perhaps a painful sensation, like PTSD... And the user of The Voice must be ready to attack the goal from different sides, different alternatives: “Go there”, “NO!”, “Go there, like you did with your GF”, “NO”, “Go there, like you did for your general”... done. All in an instant, all from using sight to understand the person... Ideas from the past were constructed with little knowledge of the universe, how things work... Frank Herbert was trapped in the past, it is ok to fix mistakes and make his work better according to the current understanding he didn’t had. IMO, humble

I enjoyed both depictions of the Voice in the movies. Obviously they were a bit more limited back in the day but they made it sound powerful and overwhelming to the listener. The new one could have been ruined if they added too much sound or visual effects, so I was pleasantly surprised at how restrained that scene was- which was important because the scene's importance is not in the demonstration of the Voice, but of Paul's trial with the Gom Jabbar.

I believe it was Piter de Vries who divulged the secret of the voice to the Baron. The Baron told Jessica thay he was aware of her abilities, but checked with Piter "Isn't that true, Piter". As for how Piter knew about the voice, I assumed it was after he captured Dr. Yueh's wife, Wanna. She was a Benne Gisserit too. Piter and Barron discussed openly in front of Duke Leto about Piter knowing many cruel ways to make people talk. So I assumed he got the secret from her before he killed her.

Did they really ban ALL computers, or just AI? There's a big difference, because traditional computer programs are deterministic (a mathematically calculable output for every possible input) and don't learn through experience. Considering Dune takes place 20,000 years in the future, it seems entirely plausible to me that traditional computers running deterministic programs could've been refined to the point that they are as mundane as furniture, and the only outward indicator that they exist would be that everyday devices are more refined and effective than their macroscopic mechanical design alone could account for. Am I really supposed to believe that Imperial decrees are disseminated by physically transporting sheets of paper with ink writing?

The voice! The bene gesserit invisible weapon, and their greatest weakness at once. If the Imperial family ever learned they can control others by speaking to them, they 'd not stop until everyone of the sisterhood was dead. The voice works on a simple principle. We are conditioned to obey since childhood. Obedience is a big part of the socialisation process. The correct tone ,supposedly, bypasses your ego making you a puppet. IDk if i'd go that far, but a suggestion or insinuation, made the right way ,can lead to actions you never considered before. That is fact. If i told you not to think of a big pink elephant sitting next to you.. what would your reaction be?

My reaction as someone who uses NLP as part of my daily life would be to think about a blue giraffe. But then I’m a bit weird like that and I’ve trained myself to be able to not think about things.

question ... why is LadyJessica portrayed as a fragile, easily shaken individual, in this new version of Dune ? help, please 🥺

The Jessica from the 1984 version was even more pathetic. But in the 2021 version I'm thinking of the scene where Jessica is standing outside the door as Paul is being tested with the Gom Jabbar. In the book we're told through third person narration that she has a moment of sheer panic but then in an instant regains complete control of herself. I'm not sure how else it could have been demonstrated in the movie without RF acting as she did. There are also some book scenes after Paul and Jessica flee into the desert where Jessica is clearly the dominant one in control of Paul. In this movie Paul was given some of that role. Like, Paul teaching Jessica how to "sand walk". No, she would have taught him. Why that was switched, I don't know.

@@bradleynoneofyourbizz5341 But Jessica wasn't a Reverend Mother at that time and didn't have access to "other memory", so the scene of Paul teaching her sand walking is plausible.

@@mikegarwood8680 But Paul didn't have access to other memory yet either. So, how would he know it but Jessica would not? Most of his abilities have come from her training. She's able to exploit and control the Fremen by knowing all of their ancient customs, superstitions and languages. How could she have been educated in all of that but not know about sandwalking? And it wasn't so much that he was able to teach her some of the techniques. It was presented as if she had no clue of it whatsoever. ETA: I really need to reread the book to make sure I know what the hell I'm talking about. It's been a while and MY other memory could be very wrong! ;)

I did not think use of the Voice was portrayed well in the David Lynch film. I think it was done better in the Villeneuve film. At least it was not as jarring, but I can't remember well now.

Do you really think that far in the future they would still be using the birth of Jesus Christ for year one? Earth doesn't even play a part in the book it's so far gone.

The newest Dune movies are space dramas VERY loosely based on Herbert's novels . It's painfully obvious that the decision was to dumb down Dune for the idiot masses .
