Quinn's Ideas

The empire had seen more than 3000 years of stability prior to the famine, stability mankind had never before known. When the God emperor died there was a political collapse of macroscopic proportion. The effect went well beyond the political realm into the most essential economic aspects of human life. Leto’s empire had been a collection of entangled economies bound together by a central political power. Leto had been that power. Many of these interlocking economies contain entire planetary systems and even whole sectors containing several systems and others were limited to single worlds. Each of these economies depended on faster than light space travel in order to maintain themselves. But space travel required spice. During the rule of the God-Emperor Leto II, the planet Arrakis had been terraformed. It was no longer referred to as Dune. The changing of the world's environment had lead to the death of the sandworms, which meant that spice production ceased as well.

It's crazy how many pictures of the god emperor exist and how there all different. I like the sand trout armor for his youth and the head sticking out of a pigmy worm with tiny little raptor arms for most of his life span.

The big point of Dune is to be aware. Aware of your own feelings, and the feelings of others. Awareness brings you to a state of learning. In your learning state your mind becomes open. The open mind leads to empathy. Empathy leads to love. Love is the most dangerous weapon in the universe. Dune, amirite?

It's been too long since I read these books. My memory is that spice-less space travel was rediscovered, not invented. Someone realized that if humanity came from Earth and spice from Arrakis, then humanity had to have had faster than light technology.

Very cool! I think cyborgs was definitely one part of it. If you think about the way the universe was in Heretics & Chapter house, it pretty much flip-flopped everything in the time of the old empire. The way everything was in book one got pretty much turned upside down through the last two books. I think that all culminated with the sisterhood being merged with the honored Matres . My overall Take from the ending was like that of Abraham Lincoln ending the Civil War. Instead of two factions killing each other off until one is the ultimate victor; I think what Frank Herbert was going with here is the idea that the merging of the two factions would be the best solution. Perhaps the idea of cyborg (evil robotics blended with humans) was a kind of side line parallel to reflect how everything Else in the dune universe would become.

I've got a theory about what the great enemy was meant to be: face dancers in control of thinking machines. Since the facedancers gained independence by taking many human lives, the commentary here would be that the great enemy is ourselves. The commentary on the use of thinking machines would be abuse of technology, which you have talked about before.
@feelthepony
@feelthepony 2 жыл бұрын
I was pretty sure the great enemy was just social stagnation, like, just like today's world is smaller than it used to be, the galaxy has become interconected, dune happens in an era where single political entities have the technological capability to rule entire galaxies. There is also the fact that in the universe, our galaxy is just a small tiny point of light. The machines have been defeated already once, so the great enemy was having all your eggs in one basket. Be it centralization of power, or of human habited space. That was my take at least.

3,000 years of stability? No, I think it was more enforced stagnation with a purpose, when Leto transcended, humanity would explode across the galaxy, without the spice to extend life the major birthrate would have to explode just to maintain, only with much more a resistance to prescience, due to Leto's own breed program. Any of humanity that over specialize, something Leto well knew, would die out or be forced to completely change who the people in question were.

I had previously overlooked the many parallels between Dune and Warhammer 40,000 (miniature military tabletop battle strategy game). The age of strife of WH40k and this age of famines here in Dune. In Warhammer the whole thing was a consequence of reliance upon technology and entrusting too much of humankind’s’ governance with AI. In Dune it seems a cause was the reliance upon spice for warp speed travel. If you follow the 40k lore very deeply at all, you’d find similarities that are undeniable. They’re both great. THANKS FOR SHARING ABOUT THIS!! I ought to read those books you made mention of that highlight these times, and the encyclopedia! Scarier still, is how our humankind is truly on a similar course, veering towards the timeline just before the age of famine in Dune. So many humans would love to scream it from the mountaintops, “Green Light!! Go!! Apocalypse in Full Effect, the horns are a ‘tootin!!”. People seem to genuinely want to either live out Revelations, or would like to think that they were there when it happened, or maybe they’d just like to think that they lived during a very exciting and momentous chapter of mankind’s history. I feel that life itself is exciting. Enough not to feel any morbid desires to see firsthand the end of our World as we know it.

I'm one of those who still thinks the Face Dancers made infinitely better antagonist because of the abilities and complications exhibited through Rakian Chief Priest Hedley Tuek for example. That AI angle was lazy, and overplayed for the depth that was the Dune universe. Dune went from being extraordinary, creative and philosophical to mundane, stereotypical and boring... But that's just my opinion.
@thegoodwin
@thegoodwin 3 жыл бұрын
In God Emperor of Dune, the God Emperor may have stopped the rise of the machines on Ix. At the end of Chapterhouse Dune, Daniel and Marty are advanced Face Dancers. If there were to be machines or some sort of AI, it would be used as a distraction by highly evolved Face Dancers or Tleilaxu against the Humans so they can launch their dominance in all aspects of human societies across the universe.

@FerociousMoOoO
@FerociousMoOoO 2 жыл бұрын
Leto II didn't create a system to function after him because the famine times and the resultant scattering are part of the golden path. Humanity was doomed if it stayed on its course, the Empire was stagnant and lost the ability to innovate and evolve. Paul and Leto II saw that if humanity stayed as it was then it'd be vulnerable to being wiped out. Paul saw that in order to save humanity he would need to sacrifice his own but he could not bear the burden of becoming the God Emperor. Leto II didn't have that choice, he saw how the Jihad had evolved and how Alia had run the regency and knew that he has no choice and he must become the God Emperor because even in the hands of the Attradies who should know how to steer humanity on the right path to avoid extinction humanity was still doomed because individual rulers could not hold the course over the length of time that was needed to ensure humanity evolved in the right direction to survive. Leto II saw that human society was sinking into stagnant ways and had stopped expanding as a species. He could see that all human timelines converged into a single thread which ended with our extinction. There was a threat in the far future that would hunt down and kill every human it could find. If humans only stayed within the familiar bounds of the old empire they could all easily be fond and wiped out. Leto II enforced his peace onto his empire with the intent that when he died no one power would be able to gain total control of all of humanity ever again. He saw that after the famine times there would come the scattering. But he also saw that humanity would still be vulnerable to the orical and and an enemy with prescience would be able to track any human down. So he also used his rule to co-opt the BG breading plan to create a gene in humans that would shield them from prescience and to make sure that gene would be passed along to most of the human race in time. Leto II was not a monster he just knew what needed to be done and knew that he was the only person that could do it. Was the Golden Path abhorrent? Yes it's horrible, Duncan and Siona both say so often. Was it the only way to allow humanity to survive? Also yes.

This cyborg talk kinda helps the bridge to Brian’s notion that Daniel and Marty are AI. Maybe the improved facedancers are AI-fused cyborgs with organic tissues. Helps them both blend in as intended and accounts for how they are suddenly able to infiltrate memories and personas with the use of the T shaped device they tried on Duncan’s tutor.

Personally I feel god emperor was the end of the series cuz Frank Herbert knew of the possibility of his early death. Which is why I feel like he essentially said that everything will turn out alright for humanity despite all of the conflicts in his 4th book. Dedicating his remaining time to showing how the golden path will essentially play out specifically in every book after it. That way he can have room to tell a story, make money off his books, and secure the ending of his book through essential narrative point of the golden path.

Cyborg would not violate OCB prohibition on Thinking Machines. As cyborg's brain is still human. If the brain was AI , then prohibition would be violated. In this sense even Cymek and Titans would not be considered true thinking machines. It can be without having to use the AI entities from the Butlerian Jihad stories by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. If there were to be cyberfied humans out there post-Chapterhouse, they're most likely to be humans in the Scattering who returned to the use of such machines.

@@thegoodwin how do you know they didnt write those ai characters into their books because they were in Frank's lost notes? So they just wrote the beginning to match the end like the star wars prequels.

@@kyleterrell6842 , there was an interview that Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson admitted that Omnius and Erasmus were of their own creations not Frank Herbert's. Also, there was another interview where they both admitted to using the Dune 7 outline and bring over Omnius and Erasmus characters into it.

@@thegoodwin I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. But I dont really care either way. I'm glad they made the ending. Even if some stuff didn't add up completely and the writing quality was not the same. I'm happy chapterhouse wasn't the end forever. My dad told me how sad he was when frank died and there would never be another book. And how excited he was when he found out there were new books. I only started reading dune about 3 years ago. And I'm glad I got to read 7 and 8 immediately after 6. Not 25 years later.

@@professorerudite I loved the ghola project. I just hated that they couldn't wake up paul until the end when he gets one line in. The whole point of them was to get their unique knowledge to help the fight. And the end of leto was kinda stupid. I liked all of it until he walked into the worms mouth. That was dumb. I have only read the main storyline books. I just don't have the money to get the prequels yet. I didnt think I would need to read them before the ending. But I dont think I lost anything. I'll probably like it more once I get all the context. This is the first real books I've read outside of school, and I never liked reading until I started dune. I feel like I'm going to be disappointed by any author not named frank herbert now.

Ooooooooh! I was wondering what I got wrong from that passage! Well well well, it's now official: Quinn isn't perfect after all. We need to cancel the building of the Church of the God-Quinn of Dune, he's human after all...

I think you over-estimate the significance of the power vacuum that Leto II left behind, and under-estimate the significance of the simple fact that -there was no spice- since the worms had not yet returned to Arrakis and the entire Empire had been on a starvation diet for 4000 years.

Question: was there ever a desire detected to resurrect the Corrino House even out of nostalgia? Any ideas floated for it after or even during Leto ll's reign?

None that I can remember, the time that would make sense to me is the 100-200 years terraforming Arrakis took
