C1 was originally pathfinder, Raei is serenrae

They were 4e, then switched to Pathfinder when Ashley wa going to join, then 5e for the stream.

@@valvadis2360 Matt had done 4e previously, but when the last campaign started, it was all Pathfinder. So Campaign 1 is Pathfinder/5e.

@@KevinVideo Matt revealed that the oneshot for Liam's birthday was 4e, when it turned into a campaign, they converted to Pathfinder.

@@theyellowninjadude if this is true, that's an interesting system to choose to introduce people to. I've only heard bad things, but the d&d adventure system board games are based on 4e a bit and they aren't too bad imo. I wonder if 4e might have been easier to explain quickly to people more used to video/boardgames? Rather than pathfinder or 3.5

It is totally true, Tiberius the Dragonborn and Grog the Goliath, are both copyrighted races created by WotC, they would not have had those options if they started with Pathfinder. Also Taliesin was playing a Dragonborn Paladin for the oneshot, when it turned into a campaign, he created a new character (Percy), with a more in depth background, etc.

Matt was once asked why he changed the drow lore. He brought up that technically he didn't, and that there are two completely separate factions of drow. Campaign 2 is focusing on the second faction. The first faction is still the CE Underdark living, Lolth worshipping drow that we know from the lore of other campaign settings.

Also, SJWs/feminists have been calling him (and others) 'racist' for stereotyping certain races such as orcs. I think that has something to do with it too. He even said that he 'regret' how he portrayed orcs in the Taldorei campaign guide and that he was "trying to be better". Pretty pathetic, if you ask me.

@@staceygram5555 Really? Wasn't there only one real incident where someone made a big deal out of it 2 years ago, and nobody but Matt really thought much of it? Maybe I avoid a lot of toxicity but I don't remember this big uproar about it.

@@Knight-Bishop No idea what the number of people who are outraged is, but apparently enough for Matt to care and change accordingly. He just can't stop pandering to the twitter mob (notice how he also added his pronouns to his bio, lol). He has referenced how "problematic" it is several times, including in several interviews (often accompanied with the condemnation of the evil Lovecraft), and as recently as a few days ago in their 'fireside q&a'. He has also brought up how grateful he is that people taught him how terrible and racist The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are, but that it also saddens him because he used to like those when he was younger. I like the show, but my god, they are pathetic people.

Jevoni Sykes it doesn’t seem so, one cause according to the book they’re imprisoned in different ways than Uk’otoa is, and two it seems they were more so an alliance rather than a full on joined team, like they pointed their own worshipers to the other and they shared power, but they were completely different entities.

I love how there are 3 different buried lesser idols and each one sort of embodies the sky, land and ocean. I would totally use a plot to free all three as a running theme in a campaign, with a finale of them either being freed and then who knows what happens. Or even upgrade the three as if they were freed but banished and combined to form some sort of like 3 aspect god

Which you can find on page 10 of the 5e DMG, as a sample pantheon, when it discusses creating your own pantheon. The only added deity to the pantheon is Sarenrae (Raei, because of copyright).

Tharizdun has existed since Greyhawk. He is also known as the Elder Elemental Eye mentioned maybe he was first mentioned in the Temple of Elemental Evil but maybe even earlier.

The lesser idols seem like demigods, powerful beings who are godlike, or forgotten deities. Wouldn't be surprised if more deities and lesser idols are added later. Yet I do want to play D&D and DM someday. Not to mention publish stuff too since I want to be a game dev someday.

Well, there are 5 continents- Tal'dorei, Wildmount, Issylra (Where Vasselheim is), Marquet & The Shattered Teeth so there could be either 1 or 2 more books in The World of Exandria for Issylra, Marquet & The Shattered Teeth. So more room for new lesser idols, Vestiges of Divergence, Monsters, Magic Etc

One of my favorite parts of Dnd is Lore. I actually don't know much about the Forgotten Realms, so if you have want to talk about those deities, I at least would be interested lol

Serenrae is a Pathfinder goddess, which is what they were playing before they started streaming. Since she's not owned by WotC, it makes sense they gave her a new name.

thank you for these videos. this one is my favorite of your Wildemount commentary. the story hooks with these gods, and their designs, especially the false gods/demigods/etc., seem worth buying the book for. the imagery is amazing!

Exandria's pantheon is interesting. Most of the deities are from the Dawn War pantheon from 4e/Page 10 of the 5e DMG, which itself is a compliation of various D&D deities (and three Earth mythology ones renamed), plus Paizo-owned Sarenrae, as the CR crew's home game started out in Pathfinder. Does this book mean that the new,"original" goddess Rae is now a trademarked WoTC character, and if so how does Paizo feel about that?

They changed the name, so technically Paizo cant do anything! Especially that Matt's version of Sarenrae/now Rae is a bit different from the Pathfinder-godess. Also trademarks are the main reason wh in the Tal'Dorei Guide none of the gods have proper names, just their titles (Allhammer, Wildmother, etc.) since those are not trademarked, as its said in the video..

The reason for the differences in Seren-Rae/Rae/ the Everlight is because Seren-Rae is a pathfinder property so there's the name change

Absolutely none of these gods (except Raei) are new to Wildemount. Literally all of them were present in 4E DnD. They were the base pantheon for that edition. This includes Sehanine, Tharizdun, and Torog. Again, literally all of them (except Raei.)

Hell yeah baby Bane Bhaal and Myrkul went up to Jergal and were like "give up ur godhood or we'll smack it out of you." And Jergal being a cool dude and a bored God was like "lmao who gets it" they then proceeded to fight ab it and when Jergal got bored again he was all "Just roll some dice and we'll make a new divinity sheet" and he split his portfolio up amongst them accordingly

I think Raei was supposed to be Sarenrae, but since Pathfinder owns it, Matt couldn't use it on the book. But canonically speaking, Sarenrae does exist in Wildemount.

He didn't make up the Chained Obvilion, he is called Tharizdun or something in Fehrun and is the reason why the Abyss exist. Dendar the night serpent - Chult. I love Pirates of Dark Water and may re-watch it again

I know this is a bit late, but Tharizdun was not made by Matt Mercer and is, in fact, mentioned in the Player's Handbook in the Pantheon of Greyhawk and as a potential patron for Warlocks of the Great Old One.

I don't know if it was addressed with the other two but I noticed that ukatoa gives his people the sword of fathoms, or the pact of the blade. What it the other 2 also are pact specific.

I'm not too familiar with 'Critical Role'... but I always thought that Sarenrae was Pathfinder's Goddess of Light version of Pelor. Does Wildemount Campaign use both Pelor and Sarenrae (Raei)?

They do share a lot of similarities, but both also share origins from other media. The idea of a glowing object housing the powers of the multiverse is nothing original to either series.

In the Forgotten Realms wiki I've read, Corelion and Sehanine were siblings and were both deities of elves. Kind of like Apollo and Artemis. Sehanine was also the god Mollymauk worshipped and served.

Not meant to be nitpicky, but is there some pronunciation guide that states Tharizdun name should be said Tharzidun, or is it just personal taste?

The Forgotten Realms wiki says that the pronunciation is "thar-IZ-dun" and cites issue 93 of Dragon Magazine. I don't know that any of Wizards books give a pronunciation though so my guess is most people just go with how they first heard it or how they read it. My group for example always says "Th-raz-din", and probably wont ever stop.

Vecna ascended to godhood during campaign 1. Vox Machina banished him as a new god.

Some gods come from pathfinder because campaign 1 was a game that started in pathfinder before streaming.

Almost all these deities are from Greyhawk (even Tharizaduin). Dreamed up by Gygax himself decades ago. On one hand I am always happy to see call backs to an old fondly regarded campaign setting, on the other I am a little disappointed in this as a supplement. I am sure that some of you younger folks are happy to experience these gods for the first time but for me I would have liked to have seen something new. One of my main criteria for new campaign settings is 'what is different about it and why does that make me want to play'. With respect to gods and deities Wildemount falls short for me.

I find the demigods, covered at the end of the video, much more interesting. They have far more presence in the setting after all, from the Luxon to the Traveller and U'kotoa.

@@aaronghunter I agree but it's not enough to save the setting for me. Don't get me wrong, there are many glimmers of creativity in Wildemount. I just wish there was more.

Mister Right I would suggest flipping through the book in a game store when you get the chance. While a lot of the setting has a standard fantasy feel to it, Matt put a new spin on a lot of things including the gods. I may be biased because I love Critical Role, but the book has given me a lot of ideas for my campaign and world.
