I've always been a fan of Plant Chompers channel, and now I'll sign up for Mic's. At age 36 I was put on Lipitor because of high cholesterol and really bad heart disease on my dad's side. At the age of 47, I saw Forks Over Knives and I went 100% the next day. At my 10-week mark, I had my bloodwork done and my doc pulled me off meds. I've been plant-based for five years now and would never look back. Four years ago I took up running and now I'm an ultra runner. After the first year, I did blood work to ensure things were in check. I also had a CRP test done at that time, which was < 5.0. Last year I was curious to see where it's at now. Had a test, and it was 0.31. I'm plant-based forever now!!

Is there any specific reason why you're saying plant based instead of vegan? I started out being plant based as well for health reasons and I healed my asthma, chronic bronchitis, allergies and skin problems. But then the animal rights side of things quickly became the main focus.

@@m.g.3913 I tend to just say plant based because it’s less of a trigger fro people. The other problem is that I did it for 100% health reasons and I do know vegans who are not that healthy. BUT much like you I have become way more aware of the horrors of animal production.

It's wonderful that you're feeling/doing good on a plant-based diet, but I would also recommend you look into the concept at the core of veganism (ethics!). There's a fantastic documentary called 'Dominion' which details exactly what happens to the animals we raise for food/entertainment/clothing/etc. available for free on KZfaq. I watched a similar documentary ('Earthlings') 7 years ago and have been vegan ever since, I've even gotten involved in activism in recent years. Props to you for making the switch either way!
@someguy2135

@@Tofu_va_Bien So many reasons to go vegan and stay vegan! 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get the most common chronic, deadly diseases) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year! 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions. 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Needless killing of innocent, sentient beings cannot be ethically justified. 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) 13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance 14- Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of dementia later in life 15- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third! 16-A fully plant based diet improves the immune system according to a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health 17-A fully plant based food system would greatly reduce food borne illnesses like salmonella 18-A fully plant based food system would be able to feed millions more people. Our population is growing! 19-A fully plant based food system would save 13,000 lives a year from the air pollution caused by animal agriculture, according to a study 20- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1 trillion in health care and related costs (Oxford Study) Links for some of these are at my channel under "About." If you doubt any of them, I would be glad to cite evidence from credible sources to back them up. KZfaq only allows a certain number of links at my channel. After I made my list, I found this video with his own list which overlaps mine. He cites evidence from credible sources in the description.

My journey to vegan was introduced to veganism from an 70yrs old engineer I met on the public transit train. I told him that at 70yrs old, he should retired by now but he's still chugging away with work and had a very positive attitude toward life. He saw me trying to stay healthy and I asked him what's his secret for being revenant for an engineer of his age. He always had a positive attitude And introduced me to Dr. Gregor's book - How Not to Die. We had really good interesting conversation about health and diet. It has been 5yrs since I went on WFPB diet and all My bio marker are great. Five year later and going strong, no more cholesterol, pre-diabetes, and high blood pressure to worry about.

This is THE reason I am mostly plant based-when my family demands meat for special meals it is local, regenerative, direct from the farmer. I do use oil, especially olive, rarely coconut oil for high heat stir fry. I use a jar every 1.5 years. I am a fan of Michael Pollan as well-hoping to lure my family into eating much lower on the food chain, local, regenerative, eat the rainbow etc. Doing better is better than not doing anything to do better.

Much appreciated video especially as a viewer, I felt I got to know both of you a little more and you both probably learnt more of each other and your goals. Your heart issue to do with being an athlete really got me interested as I was an amateur athlete for years and my resting heart rate was 30 bpm. (I should add I was a tobacco smoker) Now in my late sixties and have been having events of pre ventricular ectopic (PVC's)beats that have increased from 2% to 25% over the time of the covid lockdown. My cardiologist wanted to do an ablation but then told me there's an 80% chance of success, and the possibility of having to do repeat ablations. I asked what happens if I don't do it and he says it isn't life threatening just uncomfortable. He wanted me to go on a statin and take low dose aspirin. I argued with him about statins since I had reduced my total cholesterol to 107 mg/dL, LDL's to 63 mg/dL, and Triglycerides to 82 mg/dL. (being on a vegan diet for 4 years, not smoking and minimal alcohol (3 units a week) He said okay for the time being but I have to continue the aspirin to protect from stroke. It's nine mths since I saw him and have mostly maintained the PVC's, but (this is anecdotal) since having a can of anchovy or sardines (both in brine) once a week over the last month and use a delightfully boring Buddhist monk's youtube podcast to get back to sleep when I'm woken at night. I feel maybe my PVC discomfort has reduced. Where I live in Oregon, vegan or vegetarian doctors are more rare than democratic voters and vegan cardiologists are as rare as a credible bigfoot sighting. Would love to chat sometime on the heart issues.

Hi Chris, this was a really enjoyable (great) video. When I first went plant-based in 2020 Mic's channel was really helpful, he always comes across as very personable but also smart (like yourself). He was the first person who recommended using Cronometer to track my food which I still use today (even though Tim Spector might throw cold water on tracking nutrients!). I can understand Mic's desire to let the evidence be the message in his videos, but of course the combination of this with his friendly, personable nature is the reason to come back to the channel. Another thing that was great about the video is that it opened both of you up without you realising! It's great to know more about your life (ouch, those injuries and hereditary tendencies) and I've always wanted you to talk more about the environment as I realise this is closer to your original research and ethical responsibility. When you create topics on your videos always follow your head and your heart in what you feel is the most important issue! Going Plant-based / vegan obviously is good for health, it is also a necessary move for the environment (as opposed to the sleepwalking impact of livestock farming). There's no harm in giving good environmental research a repeat airing even if you're not preaching to the converted here. The climate is going to become even more important in the next few years and you're so right pointing out that 30 years have been lost in this battle when the fossil fuel companies had clear evidence that they deliberately kept under wraps. Nicholas Carter and George Monbiot would be a great combo interview.. Thanks again for letting us join in to watch a great and enjoyable discussion with Mic. And you're right, Mic does look a bit like a younger you! ☺ Still looking forward to some videos on the Green Mediterranean diet research - and keep enjoying the dark chocolate..👍 Michael

Thank you so much for this. Your conversation free of dogmas was very interesting. I am one of those people that without red meat at least twice a week goes bananas (anemia). But, I have seen the damage the industry does on the environment. Blood and feces in the soil poisoning water aquifers and killing rivers. But it is the change from healthy crops and forests to the genetic modified grains culture needed to feed the animals that made me so sad. I am in Brazil and lived for 2 1/2 years in the west of the state of Santa Catarina. Once I flew in a small plane from São Paulo to Chapecó in a sunny day, and once passed the urban areas of the state of São Paulo all I saw was a sea of soy culture. The forests were only the monocultures of evergreens to the wood and paper industry, and the little native vegetation was along the river banks, which are there only because there is a law obliging the people to maintain it. It was in 2005. Since then I kind of lost any hope in the humankind. We are destroying our beautiful planet. Humans defecate in the water they drink. Fishermen leave plastic garbage in the ocean. And my fellows urban dwellers care more about the THINGS that they own than having a good life in a clean environment with pristine nature. Oh well! Aren’t we such dummies? Do we deserve this planet?

If you’re looking for video ideas, I’d love to see a video on the improvements in health that recent converts have going to a plant based diet. I’d love to see if there’s equivalent evidence to smokers who have stopped and how soon their health improves. (Ex: Ex Smokers have similar health outcomes to non smokers 10 years after quitting.). I'm always confident in sharing your work, since you back everything up. I never have to be one of those people that 'does my own research' on the internet, because you do it for me -- properly! Please get together again and chat soon. This was so lovely, and I felt like we got to know you both a bit better in a nice casual conversation. Thanks again.

Regarding monetizing channel, although I'm always grateful to not have ads interrupting every couple minutes, potholer54 eventually put, I think, the minimum of ads (maybe one at the end?) on his videos so that the algorithm wouldn't discriminate against his videos. I'd support you doing that, because your content very much needs to get more distribution. It's some of the best researched and most fair-minded on the internet.

Yeah, I'm hearing that KZfaq (understandably) wants to promote videos with ads... I may have to change my policy.

Recently I started binge watching your videos. I have only one comment to make regarding the naming of your channel: "Plant Chompers". Given the number of trails that you rush down, I would suggest "Plant Stompers"! Thanks for the good work and the subtle hint that I should hit the trail.

It was a great experience to watch your conversation. I'd like to have a KZfaq channel (or something in that direction) someday, but in the meantime, I want to get as much education as possible, so it will probably take a while. In contrast to you guys, I am obsessed with social sciences (especially history), in addition to nutrition and environment, and plan to research that in combination with nutrition and environmental topics (for example, point out historically how we became so obsessed with protein). The bottom line is that I admire both of your work. Thank you so much for everything you are doing! It is much appreciated and so inspiring!

This is a great episode, thanks! I know you guys are largely focused on diet, but the most interesting videos I've seen lately are about endogenous human antioxidants. There's a super surprising one: melatonin made by, and used within, our mitochondria. Plot twist -- your body needs exposure to the infrared component of sunlight to produce it. For quick overview, I'd suggest the "Sunlight: Optimize Health and Immunity (Light Therapy and Melatonin)" video here on KZfaq. It's on a (pretty wonderful) continuing medical education channel and it's evidence based, maybe 20+ studies cited in the video description. Worth a look even if you don't make a video on the topic.

Not vegan, not vegetarian, but I would call myself plant based, and I advocate to heavily cut back on meat - science just supports that. So I would call myself a flexitarian. Still I like the quality of these videos and how science based they are.

Thank you both for being fair, honest, caring, and compassionate about animals. This is completely missing in the flesh-based video faces you mentioned. Theirs' are the linear protein, fats, "nutrient density", what do I get out of it. The animals are merely objects and products to those humans. However if the animals could speak for themselves, they would love and praise you both for saving their lives. Kudos.

The Seventh Day Adventist study shows that vegan men’s health outcomes were actually better compared to pescatarian men, but the vegan women’s health outcomes are not as good as the pescatarian women. I’ve always wondered about these different outcomes, but have never heard anyone address it. I became vegan after watching Mic The Vegan videos. Great discussion 😊
