This like Bungie removing rockets and overshield from Halo because trick jumpers can _technically_ jump across Pit or Headlong. Hell, trick jumpers in Halo 2/3 could use slopes and momentum to "disrupt map flow," maybe Bungie should have just removed gravity.

Snap sliding is a fun way to improve your skill ceiling. It doesn’t break game flow it won’t make you MLG pro it just makes gameplay more interesting adding to player expression but because 343 didn’t intend for it to exist they want to get rid of it. It’s been their mindset since the beginning. They remove skill jumps and the momentum curb slides because they didn’t intend for them to exist. It’s just 343 flexing their power. They wanna cover up what they see as a mistake. The community makes it seems like a cool feature. 343 should embrace the community and fix the real problems with the game. If the community is not complaining then don’t take it out 😂 fix the things we’ve been complaining about forever not the things we embrace and enjoy

You know how many Achievements I have where 1% of the players have unlocked it? Why did they even add them. It's existed a whole year uninterrupted, leave it be & make it legacy.

As someone said on Twitter, I'd keep snap sliding for forge parkour maps. Those can be fun. Also, I'd love to see Halo 5's Thruster in Infinite. And on top of that, would be cool to make a sort of low-gravity equipment that takes one area and anyone can go up - that might be the best Halo think ever.

Arent the thrusters they have in infinite the same thing as the thrusters in halo 5?

@@PeacefulJem No they are pretty different. Halo 5 thruster you keep your momentum and can slide into speedy movement combos, unlike Infinite thrust you just lose all momentum at the end of the move. Also H5 thruster comes back every 4 seconds and is a permanent ability not an equipment pickup.

I would love to see snap sliding stay. I enjoy playing with these mechanics and even more so enjoy watching pro play with these mechanics even though I've never noticed it being over used. You def see it but it doesn't feel out of place it fits the overall feel of the game at this point.

As a casual player, I'd like snap sliding to stay in the game. High risk / High reward maneuvers should remain in the game, hopefully they can walk back on that change. Great breakdown btw

I think removing the snap slide has more to do with future map design. If they allow it they will have to design maps where it is also possible and keep in mind the extra movements it makes possible for pro play without impacting the casual player. This just makes map design 10x harder

I think the concern is long term. Its clearly something they didn't intend to be in the game and it coupled with how curb slides or similar techniques, I believe are playing a role in desync issues. I think they fear the unknown and without solutions known on how to course correct the best play is to remove it. At least at this time. Whether we like that or not is up for debate but I think that's realistically why they have made this choice. What do you guys think?

Rocket jumping wasn’t intended to be on quake and quick switching wasn’t intended to be in doom, but they make the games better with skill expression

Was going to comment the same sentiment. Nip it in the bud early. The longer the game is out the more skill gaps will be be achieved. Right now the curb slide isn’t mastered by the community, but in several years it will be table stakes.

@@CJ-sl4pklol ok lets be honest well Rocket jumping was fun and hurt you a bit....sliding around being a jack hole taking advatange of something not meant to be in game...that also makes zero sense how does a 300 pound armor suit gain momentum jumping /sliding off a ledge? lmao its stupid keep being mad like the guy who made the vid over not having exploits keep you on top now all sliders will have to learn to move around the map and will suck lmao i love it

@@rockzen8050 The fun factor is subjective, personally snap sliding is fun and rocket jumping wasn't intended to be in quake and neither was bhopping. Why does movement tech have to make sense, it's a video game. Why do shields have to make sense and the armor not being able to tank a single br shot to the head have to make sense for instance. Also, they didn't end up removing it anyways. We'll still be better than, well, most of the community at the game, regardless of movement tech because positioning is king and being able to reposition fast doesn't equate to a better player, just look at Lucid.

@@CJ-sl4pk Sure, I think the big thing with those titles was they weren't developed to be a service. I hear ya, I used the BxR in H2 but if I brought that to my local lans everyone just didnt want to play. It became too sweaty for the casuals. My point is they are making this title for the masses not a small group of people who are very competitive. Sure snap sliding is a cool mechanic but is it a health mechanic for the overall player base. Not to mention new players who may come along years into the games development.

The effectiveness relies on a higher sensitivity though right? Meaning it’s easier to perform on mouse and keyboard? I think that’s where it separates itself from curb slides

Here's a hot take.....I wish snap sliding was easier to pull off(and still in the game) I feel the skill ceiling should be in the expression of the moveset not the ability to pull them off...example, the way smash brothers allows you to do most abilities with a simple direction input and a button press, whereas street fighter has some moves that have multi directional inputs that require higher skill just to do. Little bit of a tangent--what do you think about "inverting" bloom? The more you shoot, the smaller your reticle grows. That completely removes the luck factor and still makes you pace your shots, unless you're an absolute beast--in which case you're rewarded. I've wanted this since infinite released, and one other person actually had the same idea.

How would that still make you pace your shots? If anything it would reward mashing the trigger as fast as possible.

@@ShawFujikawa Would not reward mashing… your reticle just gets smaller and smaller then, and you’re already presumably missing some shots from mashing. Any part of the reticle overlapping the enemy would be a hit. This is an example of two extremes, but-easier to hit with an AR, and its huge reticle, than to hit with a sniper and its tiny one. With the sniper rifle, most people have to take a bit of time to line their shot up. Hence pacing. We may want to leave the AR as its classic self, but could’ve been good for commando/sidekick. More competitive than “RNG”, at the least.

Even the difference between BR and sniper reticle is significant. Aim assist and bullet magnetism are factors, of course; but the reticle itself is as well.

@@gcwishbone difference between sniper and commando is obvious. The sniper has a very small ammo reserve and long time between each shot. Commando is an automatic weapon so it’s high fire rate will most definitely not encourage anyone to pace their shots.

As someone who played competitive back in halo 3 I think removing the snap slide arguably brings better balance to the game. Every time you add a new piece of movement tech it alters the balance or flow of game play on a map. Teams should be rewarded for establishing map control, the more opportunities one has to break the timing needed to maintain an of advantage the less effectiveness having the higher ground or controlling larger portions of the map gives you, too much you start effecting the balance making it feel less like halo imo. Id rather be rewarded for making big brained plays rather then just having the skill gap solely consist of who can do the most cracked out button combos like it did in h5 -strafety

I suspect the dev who pointed this "glitch" out just wanted some positive attention from the bosses. "Look what this new glitch could potentially do. It would ruin halo. See here's a clip of it being misused." Bosses: "Wow good catch. Maybe we won't fire you after all." Dev: Wags tail*

Yo Shyway, at 7:48 I definitely see where you're coming from, but imagine if this was abused on the pro stage during a CTF match? I think that's where it could really get things stirred up later down the road that they are trying to prevent before it becomes a thing. Just my 2 cents as to why I think they're removing it entirely since they are trying to get the game to flow in a certain way and probably don't want these mechanics to exist to begin with which sucks.

I basically wrote off the snap slide after an hour or so of practice, so its removal doesn’t really affect me, but I like nerdy skill gaps, so I’m opposed to its removal.

As a competitive player, I do want them removed. I think they are barriers to entry. Snap slide is something you have to dedicate time to practice. Its not something that players will improve upon while playing. Its something that you will only discover by watching a glitcher make a video or watch a pro player use it. Then you need to stop playing Halo, go to a custom game, and slide around for hours.

The snap slide isn’t being used enough to the point that you need to learn it in order to compete with other players. It is a luxury to know and be able to do it, not a necessity which is why it’s dumb for 343 to remove it.

Snap sliding, spring jumping, and anything else that involves weird, unintuitive input that you can't discover in-game, should not be in the game. Just saying "skill gap" about every nonsensical glitch is not a defense. If they added the ability to teleport by rapidly entering the Konami code in under a half second, that would increase the "skill gap". But it would be inaccessible, illogical, and undiscoverable. Same applies to snap sliding. You gave a great analogy of how you can imagine curb sliding is kicking off the wall to transfer momentum. How can you explain jumping uphill and turning providing an even faster explosion of speed? You can't. It's a goofy glitch, and it should absolutely be removed.

A glaring oversight that a lot of gamers are making regarding the snap slide vs the curb slide is that these techniques while enjoyable are very clearly a side effect of something significantly more fundamental to the in game physics of the game. For all we know snap sliding could negatively impact desync or something about server-side calculations that we know nothing about. I think snap sliding is cool in theory, but I genuinely don't think it's worth keeping around. God forbid we get a generation of kids who grind out snap sliding to the point that you can't progress beyond plat5 unless you sell your soul to Milkway.

Thats not how it works. Its a flavor of a very standard physics bug many games have. Games will always have physics bugs like this. Many games even just use them. Quake 3 strafe jumping. CS B-hopping. Tribes Ascend. etc etc.

I don't think they needed to remove snap sliding but honestly don't mind *too* much--maybe that's just because I don't make much use of it myself. Like you said though, it doesn't impact most players at all--only the most competitive, who seem to prefer it. Very wary of the plasma pistol buff; landing the shot should be a challenge. I think it'd have been cool to have it fully strip OS+shield though. Love the BR nerf, neutral about the Commando buff with regard to itself--maybe they could've tweaked the recoil and bloom relation instead. I just hope the Commando remains significantly more difficult than the loadout weapon.

removing depth from the game/gameplay will genuinely make me quit it, there isn't anything more annoying/painful than ur knowledge and skill not being rewarded, especially in a "competitive experience"

When I “snap slide”, it’s on accident and I feel like it locks me into an animation. I’m usually sliding and trying to nade somebody. I can’t beat down while in the animation and just die.

Skill gap barely exists with skill based matchmaking anyways unless ur in the pro scene. You're basically always against people your own skill level or better. Get rid of sbmm and then a skill gap will exist. Theres barely any lobbies where 1 or 2 guys pop off its all really even in my experience.

Legit the only reason why I'm subbed is because you break down and give tutorials on advanced movement (curb sliding snap sliding) so I can put it into my forge maps - bittersweet seeing them remove the advanced movement just as forge is releasing.

Like the updates, not a fan of taking stuff away though (snap slide). I'm surprised no one used that Aquarius jump (with the thruster) during CTf when 3-4 enemies down. Would be very useful in that scenario

Everyone was waiting for this video. Is the first thing that I said when I saw the news of the snap slide being removed: "Shyway is not gonna be happy". Also I realized the example that they gave on Aquarius is a curb slide + thrust. I know that because I tried a thousand times and failed

I think from 343's perspective, they are afraid of a few months/years down the road when many players can hit this tech. From a player satisfaction perspective, if you remove it after people pour 1000s of hours into this, the players are going to be even more up in arms. I think they just want to nip this in the bud now, and I kind of get it.

Hey ShyWay! I love your videos. They’ve inspired me to become better at Halo overall and play the games as strategy games as well as platformers. Thank you for sharing your advice, tips, opinions, and overall wisdom on the series. I have a question however. You don’t have to answer or even make this video as I’m just curious and wishfully thinking, but would you please make a video critically looking at Halo 4 for it’s ten year anniversary? I’ve always wondered what potential for a skill gap that game may actually have as it’s pretty much ostracized by many fans. I understand the stigmatization for it, but I really do wonder if it has a hidden skill gap no one knows about because it seemed like so many abandoned it and not enough stuck around with it to really delve into its possible potential.

I'll be honest in saying I didn't play much Halo 4 multiplayer nor did I follow the competitive scene - I can try to look into it a bit though, but can't make any promises. Not a hidden skill gap but I think spring jumping in that game is useful and easier to do than the other Halos - might have been an area that wasn't fully tapped/appreciated during the games life.. spring jumping didn't really catch on in popularity till Halo 5.

Nobody might have asked to remove it. You see, there's no "This was a request from our community" text on this matter. Still, they proceeded to remove it. Why? What we are seeing now is just a quick lazy fix on an unmanageable codebase. In their view, Halo Infinite's sliding mechanics is a buggy mess and it should have never be released as it is. Snap-sliding is just a glitch coming out from that. Nothing more than that. And they likely no longer have talents to adjust it. Sad.

At this point its good to look at quake and how they dealt with accidental movement mechanics. I believe they probably dont want something this challenging to be the core of the movement system because it "could" create too high of a skill gap between casual and competitive gamers. I believe the easy fix is to create a speed cap. But even then it would be sad. Such a unique mechanic that deserves a chance in the game. I would rather see the thrust go than the snap slide.

23:08 Im surprised this is still an issue since the fix was stupid obvious. ALL the problems everyone I know had, including my son and myself, revolved around the native hz settings of Infinite and the monitor/tv settings. Dropping from 240hz, 165hz, and 144 hz down to 120 or 60 'unbroke' the gpu processing in both the series x and on PC. Yeah my system can run 165 hz in 1440 no problem but it just creates too many sync related problems. Like dying 3 seconds late, phantom reloads, rubberbanding across the map on your own screen but nobody else sees it, and such. Seriously, drop to 120 or 60 fps and you go god mode.

Snap sliding seems like a much more attainable goal when you watch how he does it as well, it’s clear he practices this and I have no doubt pros could use this to truly upset the flow of gameplay, no mad they are getting rid of snap slides, cool mechanic, too cool….

Honestly, I find 343i's logic to be extremely nebulous considering how the grappleshot is available in most maps. Like if level design/map rotation is so important that movement tech needs to be removed, why is there equipment that requires less skill and can undermine level design even more? (I get that a lot of moves with grappleshot aren't practical, but the logic still lines up)

I don’t know if it already changed since the flights but back then (and I believe still today) you could strip shields faster by spamming the Sidekick than the PP. Which makes no sense whatsoever

I think MnK players have a big advantage snap sliding, and by nerfing it 343 is furthering the controllers advantage. Halo can’t grow if we don’t get more PC players on board

Regardless of how impractical it is, I feel like removing Snap Slide is the correct choice for a game like Halo. Not only does it have the potential to ruin the flow of the game, but it also adds elements of "RNG" to certain scenarios which is bad for both competitive and casual play. It allows you to launch yourself in a seemingly-random direction that visibly doesn't make sense to the person who is trying to aim at you. They see you running in one direction then suddenly you do a 90 degree turn and get launched in a completely different direction. At that point they're guessing what direction your going to launch yourself rather than actually watching your movements and trying to accurately predict where they should move their reticle next. In most cases, it doesn't matter how "risky" the Snap Slide is when you're basically putting your opponent in a guessing game (and a fast guessing game at that). At least Curb Sliding visually makes sense and is manageable via map layout. Besides, if Snap Sliding is not practical in competitive play then removing it for the sake of map/game flow shouldn't be a big deal in the long run. Sure it was fun to use, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a good fit for Halo to begin with.

At whatever level a snap slide would be pulled off, the enemy would know where they're going. It's not RNG at all, it's terrible to call it that. And it wouldn't even "seem random" because, again, the players that encounter/use it are pretty high level and know what's going on.

There are a lot of things to complain about and Halo infinite this isn't one of them. It's a jank movement option that doesn't even make sense and leads to unnatural feeling gameplay. Why would you gain speed from moving up an incline?

If they nerf nades too much, it's going to be a battle of whoever can get first shot -akin to Call of Duty. Nades have always been used as a last ditch effort to turn the tides of a fight. Hopefully the timing isn't too long.

Interesting how they changed the PP and Pulse carbine to being close range weapons now. I like the change to the commando but we'll see if it's OP in Lucids hands. I wish they would leave the snap slide in. I think the BR nerf is awesome. Hopefully the sword update will un-GA it.

They nerf the slide cause on bazaar were the shotgun spawn outside the house there a video where a player slide and floated of the wall and got up to where the rocket pad is at in like 3 seconds

@@Wylie288 Sounds like you never played Halo 1 or 2, Bungie started resetting ranks around season 2 on Halo 2. I remember having the comet (49) and Halo ring (50) on my gamertag for a very long time.

Totally agree with the grenade point. They are way too powerful. The game is just about blowing each other up. You shouldn’t be able to throw them so quick and you shouldn’t be able to pick them up

I was hoping to have cooler movement tech in parkour type maps in infinite. Oh well, no fun to be had with snap slides. That scary 0.01% of players that can effectively launch across the map on this latency hell of a game is just too much.

I feel like adding 0.2 seconds to grenades isn't going to change anything but temporarily mess with the timings of people that are good with them. grenade spam will feel better for all of 2 weeks

not bothered about snap sliding, I like advanced movement, I've practised it loads and consistent, but it doesn't make sense, especially uphill. Ramp and curb are fine, still skilful and rewarded with the higher jumps/drops and they make sense. I want the extra thrust capabilities too, I think them being pickups negate the H5 arguments against, within ranked, and will make fiesta and other social game types more fun. Kneecapping and thrust slide also make sense (not so much drop thrusting between a vehicle and a wall though). Happy about most of it tbh, fxxx me, I'm beginning to sound more positive than ubernick, I've been constructive again, what's the matter with me.

Nah that .02 seconds will do absolutely nothing to nerf grenades or ‘nade spamming. May not be a problem for ranked… but the problem lies with the lack of player collision. This is why you see grenades all over the place. Because there are NO penalties to spamming grenades near your teammates.

I have the opinion that if casuals see this type of gameplay in competitive games, they'll feel it's a necessary thing to learn to gain an advantage when it's not intended to have the sorts of hidden unintended movement tech in the first place. I think it's already a little bit of a stretch to keep curb slide as is, and I feel like I need to be able to pull it off in order to play Halo infinite "properly"

Snap Sliding is not only very fun but hard to pull off. The trade off is a late weapon pull and putting yourself into the open. I feel as if 343 is scared when things like this come out and just trash it out of fear that it might be breaking the game. Or they feel as if it is breaking their game. I practiced snap sliding a lot and its really fun but I only ever use it maybe once per match. Glad you're always bringing up these changes and letting the community know why it should stay! Hope 343 listens to you for this one especially.

I'm gonna put a bet on the removal of snap sliding being an unintended consequence of patching another bug. I'd put a nickel on the justification given being what they came up with rather than saying "yeah we still have no clue why this is happening... good luck everyone else". I hope I'm wrong. In the event that I'm not wrong, here's my follow up bet - they un patch it a month later because it broke something else and everyone is more upset than before they made the change.
