The statement about the bomb was important to Netero's statement. The bomb was low budget and easily mass produced among small countries. if that's capable of killing the King, Meruem never stood a chance against the human race... hence our evolution.

One of my favorite facts about this fight is that in the manga, during Netero's final monologue he says "You underestimate humanity's infinite potential for _____" with the final word being *evolution* in furigana and *malice* in kanji. Togashi uses a play on words to equate the two giving rise to one of the most important themes of the arc: that humanity evolves through its malice. It's also supported by how monstrous Netero looked in his final moments and how Gon has been devolving in the last few episodes, especially on contrast to Meruem who has become more human-like through his feelings for Komugi, Pitou who has become more sympathetic as she *protects* and heals another individual, and Youpi who has found respect for his fellow warriors

I love this episode so much. The sudden, entirely logical reveal that Netero was never relying upon martial arts to defeat a monster. The natural Shonen conclusion is that it would fall to Gon and Killua with their ballooning powers, but no. They just nuked him, because of course you would.

And yet, with the expectation that a damn nuke can finish the hurt Meruem off, this conclusion still leaves things interesting for the rest of the arc. Netero was shown to be the only one capable to defeat the king and everyone else has by now basically been defeated by the three royal guards, who are guaranteed to go ballistic once they discover the king's fate! So who can defeat them, and how!

If it was up to Netero and he could have defeated Meruem in a fight he would have gladly loved that. However he was tasked to wipe out the King and if possible the Royal Guard by any means necessary. At the end of the day there were people who were mad as hell about the use of the Rose yet they ignore the entire story of the arc: The Ants thought they were the top of the the food chain when humans have been there for so long we created ways to wipe out our own species at a moments notice.

実際のところ、メルエムの敗北は彼がネテロと2人きりで宮殿から離れた時点で決まっていました。ネテロに下された命令は、メルエムを人民に被害の及ばない地点に誘導し、速やかに自爆する事でした。つまりメルエムとネテロの戦闘は、単に自分より強い相手と闘いたいというネテロのわがままであり、作戦には何の影響も及ぼしません。これはGI編におけるゴンとゲンスルーの闘いのリフレインです。しかしメルエムは、ネテロを自分と同じ人類の王であると誤解し、ネテロの敗北と人類の敗北を同一視しました。しかしネテロは所詮政治家の使い走りであり、また彼が半生を費やして極めた武術すらも大量生産が可能な原子爆弾に遠く及びません。これはリーダーが死ねば種全体が滅びる蟻と、システムが存続する限り決して滅びることはない人類との対比のメタファーになっています。個ではなく全体としての力、人間個人は代替可能なシステムの媒介でしかないという事実、それこそが人間の進化の真髄です。そしてこれは独裁国家と民主国家の極端な例のメタファーでもあります。ヒトラーが死ねばナチスドイツは確実に崩壊しますが、ルーズベルトが死んでもアメリカは何事もなく存続します。

This part has always made me wonder--- If humans ever evolved to gain some kind of magical powers, would it even matter? We have already harnessed the fusion of the sun that could literally disrupt/destroy a whole planet. Same with an alien invasion. Would it really matter?

9:53 Netero said "humanity's infinite potential for evolution". But in the Japanese manga, he said "人間の底すら無い悪意/進化". It means "humanity's bottomless malice/evolution". In Japan, there is something called "furigana" to indicate how to pronounce kanji. Normally, the left side is kanji and the right side is small hiragana to show the pronunciation. But in this case both sides are kanji characters. Also the pronunciation of the character 悪意 is originally "akui" not "進化shinka". Togashi wanted readers to read the kanji for malice as evolution. I think he wanted to tell that these two words are inseparable like two sides of a coin.

The dub of this moment has one of the most chilling lines. Instead of "infinite potential of humans", he talks about the "bottomless malice of humans" which I think is more fitting considering that the bomb he used was made by humans to kill humans, not to defend against Ant kings.

yes, the amazing wordplay was lost in translation in that one. in the manga, togashi wrote "humanity's infinite potential for evolution/malice". the kanji togashi used can mean malice, but the furigana used is for evolution. a japanese friend of mine gave this line as the closest translation of the sentence: ''You know nothing of the bottomless malice within the human heart!!''

I think you didn't get the last thing Netero said , he said that he wasn't alone and that the human race also evolved with technology, so the technology and knowledge that has passed from generations to generations is backing Netero, That was his answer to Meruem when he talked about the evolution of the ants So he didn't " potentially defeat" him alone

Mereum told him earlier that he was a “lone soldier fighting a lone battle “ basically saying he was fighting on his own since humans are selfish, but Netero told him that he had the backing of his friends, members and all of humanity behind him. That humans aren’t selfish and worked together to defeat the ants. That’s what he meant with “i am not alone” and “don’t underestimate the human race”

This honestly shows why the Ants never stood a chance. The strongest man shown up to this point in the anime couldnt defeat Meruem, but a cheap bomb that can be easily produced can.

They could have literally just thrown TEN of those bombs at Meruem whenever they wanted. They could just blanket the whole island in atomic fire. The Ants were never a threat, they were pests. Meruem understood that at the end, he was ALWAYS in checkmate by humanity.

That's because using a nuke would have been an act of terrorism. And that Republic of East Gorteau, NGL or other nations would have had severe problems with it. So V5 nations used Hunter association and Netero in extension to carry on a secret OP and take the target to a weapon testing site. So, nothing is out of the ordinary to anyone else.

Ok my brother explained that the leg and arm he loses are the same ones he didn’t use when playing with gon and killua in episode 7. And he basically has always done that to give his opponents the advantage. That he subconsciously didn’t guard those limbs as well. Which is so fascinating

This whole fight from start to finish is so, powerful, beautiful and impactful. To me, Netero as a character is what humans become when they transcend and push through the “limit”, similar to how Meruem says it, and I’d say the main difference here is battle experience and pushing the boundaries of what it means to be human through Nen, and raw physical strength and intelligence, gold vs purple, you can interpret that how you like. The fact that Netero is pushing against inevitable defeat and death, and laughs in the face of it, coming out with some of the most impactful and motivational lines I’ve heard, delivered in the most satisfying way. On top of that, props to the people who contributed to this amazing fight, everything is perfect from start to finish, and there’s so many moments where you can stop and just get a perfect wallpaper screenshot. As Netero sits there on his knees and stabs himself in the heart, he has cemented his legacy.

Trivia: When Netero said "evolution" it has double meaning, in the manga evolution is the pronunciation but the kanji of the word means "malice", so he is telling Netero that he shouldn't underestimate human infinite potential for evolution when it comes to be evil. And that's very true because we are unbeatable when it comes to find more and more and more way to destroy other creatures and each other, an infinite amount of weapons and even nuclear weapons, every time more destructive. So that's what Meruem didn't understand, nen is not an almighty power in this world and it's not the peak of human evolution, nen is just about the individual strenght, but humans have waaaaay more destructive weapons than Nen. In fact that bomb was law budget and could be easily mass-producted, which means that the ants never stood a chance to win a war against humanity, a couple of bombs and they were doomed. The only reason why it didn't happen in the first place was because they were surrounded by humans (call them human shields) because of the selection, and so thousands of innocents would have died. As hinted in Netero's flashback before he fought Meruem, when he said that they were both in difficult positions, he thought after a phone call that they intended to put the blame on Hunter Association if that happened, so Netero had to destroy the ants without massive casualties among the citizens or they would have dropped the bombs and blamed the Hunters for that. HOWEVER, why didn't Netero just had Meruem leave the palace and used someone else ability similar to Knov to escape and drop a bomb there? It was surely possible to find nen user with similar abilities for the chairman of the hunter associations, somebody who could teleport or hide in a separate dimension like Knov, or simply directly ask Knov to do so (before his breakdown). It would have been simple and safer, right? Well, it's just about ego. Netero WANTED that fight, he never had a true challenge once he finished his training, he was the top nen user in the world. He wanted an enemy he wasn't sure he couldn't win against, he wanted that fight, the satisfaction he never had once in his life because of his own strenght. Netero couldn't back down from his own ego, he wanted to face somebody considered even stronger than him and win with his own strenght. To make sure he would have finished the job he got the bomb implanted in his body, so if he had lost, the king would have died for sure anyway. He lost, admitted it by telling Meruem his name, and then kaboom. Netero got what he wanted, the fight of his life, the thrill he always seeked for, and died with a smile on his face. Another detail: Netero lost his right leg and left arm, those are the ones that he USED against Gon and Killua in the ball game, in which he didn't use left leg and right arm. That was his bias, such a little and futile detail, but still it costed him his life.

Fun fact, the author recently classified Meruem as an emitter type. He just has so much aura that it probably wouldn't matter if he went into a different class of nen since he has more than enough aura to use it inefficiently. He just doesn't have access to specialist nen if he's not training for it.

I think that the whole point of this fight and really this arc, is to show that no matter how "evil" these monsters may seem, humans have the most potential to be Evil. No matter the violence of the animal kingdom, humans will remain the ultimate apex predator.

Meruem was figuring out what Netero did to get to that level (training the same move) but he did not intend to guess what drove him to do that crazy impractical training in the first place, no one knows and its pointless to guess, the only thing we know is that Netero was seeking for the ultimate power but the "why" he came to that conclusion of training gratitude and one punch its unkown

That's so f*cking beautiful, all the incredible power system that HxH has and probably the most OP character on entires series that trained for several years and just one bomb, low budget and easily mass produced is more OP than him, that's really human greatness at peak - infinite potential for evolution (and/or malice).

if you go back to the episode where Netero encountered pitou, pitou was able to read Netero's attack in just one move. Her amazing eyes and instincts already catched Netero's movements, that concludes pitous eyes is faster than the King.

If the ants were sucessfull in getting an army, they could still be defeated, but would be so much harder. Imagine 20000 Palm capable nen users. Ok you could nuke then, but they would not be at the same place then it would be so much more damage and costs so cutting this problem at the root was really needed

A reminder that there are two ways to read Netero's statement. One way of reading it is indeed a statement about humanities potential for infinite evolution, but the other way of reading his statement in the original Japanese is 'malice'. Netero warns Meruem that even if the ants can exceed humanity's ability to evolve, they cannot match humanity's endless hatred. Hatred that leads it to build such weapons of destruction. That something that's used by *small* dictatorships is effective against everything that they have built, means that if you really get humanity's attention not even your atoms will be left.
