I grew up in the town where this tv show was made. I cringed at the constant comments of it being "an empty town". Sauble beach has always been a charming, simple place. It used to be a place that people could have a decent vacation on a small budget. In the past few years, it had been "discovered" and is changing in a way that makes me sad. The community that lives here is not trendy or in-touch with trends. However the people and the First Nations communities that live here will continue to live here for years to come....I wish they would acknowledge what's already there instead of painting it as a ghost town.

Omg, I'm very sorry! Gentrification socks everywhere. I've seen old, historical buildings in my country being transformed in hotels that look like a mix of Ikea, Restoration Hardware, Wayfair, and Pottery Barn in an bad, bad way, that it totally doesn't match the exterior nor the history of the building. But people look the other way because Instagram! The heck!

Its not the same as gentrification. These were already motels so they weren't housing for locals. If it's improved it'll just mean more revenue from tourism. It would he different if they were turning local housing into short term rentals but they aren't
@tinabean7132 жыл бұрын
@@hannadebora5967 There are two arguments that maybe could be made for it being gentrification: (1) I don't know about Canada, but where I am people who are down on their luck do end up living in $40/night motels from time to time. (2) If you can rent a motel room for $200/night, then that will attract the airbnb hosts and other real estate investors to buy up available property and price out locals. Hopefully housing stays affordable and they just experience a boost in motels and hotels.

Yup, all I can see is their lack of design technique and skill. I get doing a trendy motel but there is a way to do it smart and then there is........this. The wood paneling for example - typically I would agree it's dated but the angling really gives it a different look. That space would have been 100000x more Instagram-able if they had kept the wood and focused on trendy accents. It would have looked better in general, it wouldn't look as cheap AND it would make it way easier to update so that it stays trendy instead of getting stuck in one aesthetic. And honestly, I am with Paige - the "Rose all day" vibe is already out.

I'm from Toronto, and I'm growing tired of all the universal praise for the June. I haven't been but Google reviews share unclean rooms, chipped paint, tired decor. You're right - diy decor works for your own apartment but not a hotel with high traffic. I am shocked they can charge 200-400 a night for these rooms. Sauble beach is lovely, but it can be a day trip from Toronto or you can stay in a whole cottage elsewhere. I don't understand the high price tags for rooms when the amenities, service and we'll appointed luxury in a suite isn't there. Good for them and the hustle though, but my bf and I could never stomach paying $400 a night for a selfie opp. And this series has turned me off that style a bit too, I need to shake up my own place and throw out my neon sign 😝

Hey! I actually live in this area about 25 mins from Sauble. You asked about what the locals think and honestly it’s not just the June Motel. There’s tons of other shops that do the same thing to appeal to the Instagram ears in the summer and fall then shut down for 7 months. For me anyways it’s the type of people (the instagrammers) that are ruining it for the locals. I haven’t even attempted to go to Sauble this summer because it gets completely overrun with oblivious tourists that have no respect for the landscape, the locals, or the way of life. Like even the horse and buggy comment, it’s just mennonites and they’ve lived here for decades alongside locals. Have respect for those that took care of this place before your camera found it… sorry that was long. It’s just annoying. Also they charge ridiculous amounts a night that no one can afford. I saw they sold some merch and was interested in a robe until I found out it was 225$… for a freaking house robe

Yeah I noticed this a few years ago. Like the "Wellness Refinery" place in where Baker Bob's used to be? Who tf goes to Sauble Beach for vegan smoothie bowls or whatever? Personally, I think painting the wood paneling white outdated the space even more. I don’t fully understand why people continue to paint over genuine wood. Also, the motel renovation could have been done in a way that it still blended into the fabric of the city: warmer colors, vintage furniture, reusing pieces already in the space, etc. But, I guess cheap, fast, and “instagrammable” was the focus…

They’re 100% gonna have some of those “instagrammable” decorations stolen, not to mention that they’re decorating the rooms for bachelorette parties and not the many other people who will be staying there. Also, in the second episode they don’t even hang up the frames above the bed but instead lean them above the bed on the headboard which seems like an accident waiting to happen. I just finished the show today! But I really didn’t like it, they were so unorganized which led to so many budget problems. I personally love to plan ahead and if they had planned ahead they wouldn’t have gone over budget with certain parts of the motel, and I ALWAYS suggest leaving a set amount of money aside on large projects for when and if something happens. But when they were designing this hotel they made so many decisions in the room which led to teams working hard to paint things just for them to go “ehh I don’t like it redo it!” There are so many online resources they could have used to help them visualize paint colors in the room, I’m almost positive you can use AR to see how a paint looks on the home depot or Lowe’s website, which is such an accessible tool.

Sauble Beach was "unknown" about 10 years ago (and as a local, it was great), but now is a pretty big tourist attraction - it's packed in the summer, as it is one of the best sand beaches in Ontario. One of the biggest issues is lack of accommodation for people who drive up from Toronto and other places, but renovating a cheap motel isn't the right approach to solving that problem. I’ve been thrifting clothes for a while now but not home decor. Your channel and seeing what you can do with stuff you already have and find secondhand makes me feel like I can do that in my real life too

You definitely can. So many cool things end up in thrift stores....

I guess you can say that Christmas stuff has become popular to thrift.

Have a look at Daniel Arshams House, it had old wood paneling everywhere, and I think he did a really great job in his renovation! He kept all the wood.

That diagonal wood paneling is gorgeous! Large wood panels are always nice and the angle makes them even more interesting. As long as the wood is a neutral color (not too red) and doesn’t have a shiny lacquer, I think it fits in well in a contemporary space and can look quite luxurious.

I am so happy that you watched this because the whole time I thought of you and how it was everything you hated. My friend stayed here, it was like $350/night and she said you couldn’t tell if the furniture was actually just someone’s random vintage crap that wasn’t comfortable or forgotten furniture altogether. Sad thing is that this motel makes so much $$$$

I have never left a comment before, but I couldn't last the entire episode when I pulled it up on Netflix. I skipped to the end and hated every second of the fake friendly cheap cringe fest that is this show. It is just BAD. I can't believe I watched bits of it again via this video, but it was reassuring to know you hated it as well.

We moved in a very outdated house this year with wood paneling and we love it. Just painted it and it looks textured.

Obsessed with wood paneling I’m all about keeping it! I wholeheartedly believe it will be back in the next few years since we’ve already had so much midcentury revival

Oh yes please react to more of this! I just skipped into the next episode and I have a feeling you might find a soulmate in their contractor. Also keep the diagonal wood panelling, never seen this before, to me it looks really cool.

THANK YOU. My family is from Bruce County and I spent every summer in Sauble Beach growing up. I stayed at the former Knight's Inn several times. I am disgusted by what these women did to the place, taking it from like $100 a night to $400, and their vision for what the town should be. It's a rural vacation community and the First Nation owns half the beach. It is not empty or gross or whatever these chicks said (I haven't watched the show myself because I don't want to have a stress-induced stroke, but I've heard a lot of what they said). I hope that this style looks incredibly dated and cheesy in ten years (moreso than it already does to anyone but the worst Instagram #girlbosses anyway) and the place goes under so it can be an affordable motel again.

Also the pics they show of businesses boarded up and whatever trying to make it look like a ghost town that they're going to rescue... it's because they're there in the WINTER. Nobody is there at that time, most of the businesses are seasonal and don't stay open. The place is packed on summer weekends.

Can’t agree with you more. Would love to see you make a video discussing some “timeless” design options.
@inesnovosel30252 жыл бұрын
I had so much fun watching this video 😀 My problem with their design is how they made the whole motel only for summer. If they decided to make it a bit more classic and timeless, what could have been done with wood paneling left untouched and a calmer colour palette, maby with a stronger 70's feel, people might actually stay there all year round for a few nights maby on their road trips. And for a small town like this I would somehow include a fun part for the locals as well. I really don't appreciate faux plants anywhere. 😅
@esthers3906 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. The regions surrounding the great lakes have cold, humid winters. The original design had a cabin-like warmth which is completely missing from the new design. They could've modernized the motel a bit while keeping the cabin vibes and warm woods.

I just need you to watch the whole series - this was just 👌🏻😂 I thought it would get better but their obssession with the weird peach/pink paint, ‘insta moments’ - everything is a ‘moment’ and their ideas that every space just needs ‘plants(plastic), multiple rattan light shades in one bunch, peach pink paint and the ugliest terrazzo tile’ - I honestly just can’t 😭 haha x

"Junify is a word that we invented!" Really? It wasn't a word already? I am curious with places like these - how often do you update the decor if the whole point is to be on trend? You would HAVE to do everything on the cheap for it to make sense business-wise.

I thought the same about the chairs! Painting them in a flashy colour. Bright pink, yellow or green.. I liked the old dark nearly chocolat brown kitchen with those big round knobs! It's cool. And beyond that, everything you said: Yes!! Yes yes yes!
