Every time they spoke to the contractor I could feel why every Canadian outside of Toronto hates Torontonians. I would hate us too. They were so belittling of his opinions/experiences-- not a great look. Just feeding into stereotypes and clichés. Also, all those fake plants??? I feel for the housekeepers having to deal with hundreds of those dust traps.

That two tone apricot beige half wall is giving me carehome/hospital vibes. All they need is the panel of acrylic plastic at the top so the waiting room chairs don’t leave scuffs XD

Drop Ceilings were an 80s thing! Air conditioning became a big thing in commercial spaces and HVAC had become slightly more affordable replacing the window unit. The drop ceiling concealed ducts and served as insulation to keep spaces cool. There were a couple other things--fire sprinkler systems became mandatory in the mid 80s and electrical codes changed so a lot of things were being installed onto the ceilings and needed to be tucked away, but it was mostly air conditioning!

I’ve stayed in the double room on a girls weekend - can attest is was 1) 400$ a night 2) Really cheap feeling (they never replaced the doors and keys so the doors were almost impossible to open 3) the whole vibe is weird and tacky and doesn’t match the rest of the tiny lakeside town - the only thing keeping them in business is the fact that it is the ONLY hotel in the area (it’s mostly bnb’s, cabins and camping around), and the pool which is actually nice and heated

That heavy art will slip off the headboard ledge and break someone’s nose. Give it a month.

I absolutely hate fake plants too, it's like the opposite of why you'd want plants in the first place. Plants are for life, air, nature, and plastic plants just feel so gross.

The worst part of this show was how poorly they spoke about the town, and how clueless they were about how that came across. Saying things like "The one thing this town desperately needs is a good restaurant" but this is their first time there and it's off season when most things are closed. I'd love to know the townspeople feel about this show.

Lol okay so a couple Ontario context points: The Knight Motel is a chain so they can't have that. And Sauble is a super touristy town, so definitely good but also definitely a summer town. But that's also normal for Sauble/ Bruce Peninsula, most businesses up there close for the winter. And they're on a lake not an ocean. But I really love this series, please don't take this as negative commentary! It's just some context points because you/most of your audience don't seem to be familiar with Ontario

As someone who has lived in the area the hotel is, I can tell you that this is not going to go over well. The Northern summer season is maybe from late May until early September (if that), so for them to make enough money to keep this up and running will be difficult. Also, the types of people from this area are generally not into this type of decor. We have a lot of hunting, fishing, and outdoor sports in that area. I just don't see locals LOVING this eyesore. I think their guests will come from watching this show and wanting to be a part of it, but the demographic is not right. These ladies have no clue IMO.

The leaning"art" will fall on your head when your bestie, bridesmaid leans over to sick up after too may pineapple/coconut cocktails

there are some seriously indestructible, lush green plants that would only need to be watered once every 2-4 weeks or maybe even longer. They would also be SO much cheaper than faux. Pothos, philodendron, parlor palms, ZZ plants, snake plants, spider plants… even monstera are so trendy and tolerant of neglect. i would be so mad if i paid that much for a “motel” then noticed the entire hotel is covered in faux plants.

I guess they saved money on accessories and decor by going to Walmart. This contractor’s facial expressions and reactions to their suggestions is the best part of the video

The one thing worse than faux plants, is faux plants thick with dust. Give them a month.

I was hoping when their friends stayed they would give them some home truths about the practicalities. Like they never spoke about enough plug sockets and ones with USB chargers. They type of thing you expect in a recently renovated motel/hotel.

This town literally shuts down for tourism so they don’t need it to work in the winter. April - October is season including the shoulder seasons.

Let's talk about GENTRIFICATION, the contractor seem to hate their guts.

We were told in the 1970s during the energy crisis that we had to lower all ceilings to 8’ to save on energy costs/use. In about ten years time millions of gorgeous historic buildings were chopped up by cheap grids that suspended those square or rectangular acoustic tiles EVERYWHERE.

Having also watched the series, I agree with your opening assessment that it’s essentially a train wreck. You don’t want to look, but you can’t turn away! As for the difference between them calling up their parents for help vs. you having your dad help you set up your apartment; I’d say it’s a question of skills. Your dad helps you establish your place, he’s your dad and you’re living there. And if he needed help starting a KZfaq channel, you’d be helping him. Whereas their constant refrain of “Girl Boss” seems to take a hit if they’re constantly running back to their dad. “You just spent how much on this place? Should’ve budgeted for the preliminary stuff you needed.” At least, that’s what I’d hear if I called my parents asking them to cut their established rates because I can’t budget correctly.

The target demo for them made no sense to me.. in the middle of Canada? Ok

There is no way I’d pay $300+/night to stay at a motel of any kind, but I definitely wouldn’t pay that kind of money for this even if it were officially a hotel. Not my style, I hate the colors, I hate the artwork, I hate everything about it. But I love watching you hate it, it’s the only good thing to come from this disaster project.

I love hearing your take on this show. It's funny that when I watched this series, I thought about you. HAHA And they are going for this 1970s retro feel. I'm 51 years old and remember the 1970s. They are NOT doing 1970s retro vibe. They've done more of a mid to late 80s high end look that most of America didn't pick up on until the early 90s.

I think in Canada having a drop ceiling is important to retain heat. Exposed beams and such are super nice but they add a lot of space to heat in the winter.

After my husband came home from Vietnam in the early 1970’s, we became interested in purchasing real estate as prices and interest rates here in So Cal were low (but not for long). We first purchased a little Spanish bungalow for our love nest, then moved on and bought a 6 unit concrete block motel on Route 66 which we converted into studio apartments. We of course kept the old neon sign with the words “Dun-rovin’ Motel”. Great video!

They did a thing with Toronto influencers about a year ago, The Sorry Girls were there... And I think it looks better after it's totally done (based on their vlog). But I'm not a fan of the neon signs and fake plants. It reminds me of a slightly nicer, trendier Jersey Shore Motel.

really the Netflix show is more of an ad against them, they didn't really do much of a makeover except for paint, bedspread, some stuff in the bathroom, fake plants, the pool area, the reception and the kitchen. Personally I was hoping for more of a tear down.

Foam/ drop ceilings were put in the 70s when the price of heating went up. The drop ceiling makes it much cheaper to heat big places

I work at a luxury vacation rental company and we all talked/laughed/cringed at this show. I feel like their theme is basically the pink wall in LA

This show is the Hallmark Christmas movie equivalent of home makeover shows. Only fun if you view them as comedies even though the creators intended them as dramas. Things we learned: "Restore to Glory Days" = Spray paint over The June Motel Experience is a great idea for a horror movie They consider plastic vinyl "way too rustic" The most important demographic to target is blackout drunk millennial's with money they've saved from living at home These girls made poor Rick question his life choices The Cheetah print sneakers explained everything about who these girls are Also, your pup's instincts are why she has survived so long, she clearly has the ability to sense danger.

Maybe I'm weird for this but hotel and motel are completely different vibes to me.. a hotel you go to because it's a good place to tie you to your real destination. You gotta feel at least somewhat taken care of. DIY too much and it will come off very cheap and weird But a motel? That's where you go out of necessity and leave as soon as your car turns on again. DIY as you want, I'm not looking behind the door anyways

My company tends to be cheap about a lot of things - we used to be a low overhead contractor anyways - and even when we were too cheap to properly maintain our buildings we still paid a company to tend plants for us. I don't know how much it costs, but if the previous generation of owners didn't balk at it, it couldn't have been that bad. They water and fertilize them, trim or replace them as needed, and the leaves never look dusty. I expect an overpriced, trendy motel to be better than my office. Heck, I expect a moderate priced motel to be better than my office.

The drop ceilings I think rose to popularity because of its sound deadening and ease of electrical and duct installation.

Regarding the drop ceiling--I live in a 115-year-old farmhouse that had drop ceilings in one of the main living areas. My husband tore it down within the first week that we moved in. Under the drop ceiling (which wasn't as hideous as the one in the video) is plaster and lath. It is far, far worse than the drop ceiling. It is such an overwhelming project to make over that it has sat that way for way longer than I care to admit. I think that is why people started putting up drop ceilings, especially in older homes. They wanted to cover up their crumbling plaster ceilings. Our walls have some paneling in some rooms, too. I'm sure if we pull the paneling down, it will be a huge mess. My option will be to paint the cheap-looking paneling so that it looks less depressing. Older homes have charm, but you have to be willing to put in a lot of work. LOL
