Thousands of Hollywood writers have put down their pens in protest for weeks now to demand higher pay and a greater share of profits by major studios from the streaming boom. But with streamers having accumulated a huge library of K-dramas and Japanese anime, how much will the writers’ strike actually affect streaming giants?

Diversifying internationally has been the secret sauce for Netflix continuing to dominate the streaming game in spite the insane competition that has come over the past 5 years, even from trillion dollar companies. It's clear that they are the most consumer centric company in show business and it will continue to pay tremendous dividends long term. It was long overdue that US companies started valuing international product. Hollywood is not the center of the universe and the entertainment industry will survive if it collapses, just like dumb decision making destroyed Detroit since the 80s doesn't mean there are no more cars now.
@sws212
@sws212 11 ай бұрын
What the video fails to mention is the relative cost of their international investment vs US. 2.5 billion in Korea is literally nothing to what they spend on US shows, that's basically what they've spent on like their last 10 Netflix movies before we even discuss what they spend on anything else. Asian / Anime content are niche markets for Netflix with the preference for that content majority owned by domestic channels in those countries, that's a cultural aspect US companies consistently fail to replicate. It's nonsensical to believe they can run to Asia when the majority of their userbase is American and still dependent on Hollywood. Yes, it'll help them be more sustainable long term, No, they still need the writers and actors striking.

Even before the writer's strike, I started watching more international shows on Netflix/streaming services. I just find them more entertaining, and the writing, storylines, and acting are much better. I'd say about 95% of shows I watch now are international (mainly Korean, Latin American, British, and Nigerian). I find that a lot of the writing on American shows is repetitive and has gone downhill in recent years (in exception for a few breakout shows). That being said, the requests from the writers and SAG aren't excessive, I hope they could reach an agreement.

Besides the "solution" being to just wait it out, this doesn't help Asian (or any global) content. It just potentially means greater volume. Writers around the world face the same problems as US writers. So, greater content doesn't necessarily mean better ideas. The only viable solution is for studios - Asian, global or American - to give writers the support they need (ie, larger rooms to have more writers contribute to scripts, the ability to be part of all production, money to tide them over when they're not working, not replacing people with machines).

Larger writers rooms are a problem. If five people can write a show, why should you need to pay a dozen? This is also why shows lack any kind of unified vision - the main writers keep switching every episode, so nothing ties everything together.

You lack an understanding of this issue. In Asia you don’t have unions to protect workers, the CEOs don’t care who does on Set, asian or Caucasian. The reason why we have unions in North America is because people have died at work and the unions fought for safety regulations, as well as food and a warm place to work at. None of this is being provided and on top of that people are being overworked and literally used in a game against the workers on a different continent. Change is never favourable towards the masses, what Netflix is doing is shady and it’s basically using Asian cinema to make money while people who fought so hard to be in union and have a safe place to work are no longer working. None of this is normal or acceptable. and unfortunately people like you will never know the dark side of the film industry unless you’re someone like me who has worked in film industry for decades.

@@lawtraf8008 You're probably looking at things from a non-Korean perspective. Korean critics are noting how Netflix productions follow popular plotlines and expectations, but not scripts that challenge the audience and the art. They worry that investment in such content means writers stop writing quality scripts that appeal to Koreans but not necessarily non-Korean audiences. By the way, the K-dramas you watch on Netflix are not necessarily produced by Netflix. Netflix traditionally buys streaming licenses of already-popular content from other countries. One of my favorites was Angry Mom and one I heard mentioned a lot, Because This Is My First Life, was not Netflix-produced content. There were cool Korean dramas before Netflix was on the scene 😉 which ones did you find weird and boring?

I might be misunderstanding the problem in Hollywood, but the CEOs from the Hollywood studios should be alarmed of streaming services filling the gap with overseas production. They are going to loose share of the market if they prolong the strike. It’s sad that greed makes you loose sight of the bigger picture.
@RoddieSimmons
@RoddieSimmons 11 ай бұрын
i agree they should be alarmed, but the problem is not that actors are not paid on the networks etc. It is pay from streaming, so unless streaming anties up then ther is the problem. The fact is actors are paid by a few networks 3-5 for residuals, but there are almost 3 times as many streaming networks who are splitting the pie. If they can consolidate (Hulu, Disney, ESPN+ It will help out. Their is money in streaming that is divided by at least 10 networks. (Disney, Hulu, Paramount+, Netflix, HBO, Max, Peacock, Bravo, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video etc ). Streaming is a big pie, but actors only get paid by one who is competing against the other 10.

I feel bad for American Writers. I see the main difference is the reading culture between East and West cultures. Thousands of Anime are adaptations of Author's work. So some authors gain a lot of fame and income due to recognition from their books first. This includes Anime directors, animators, manga, and Light Novels. I can hardly remember any American writers or Comic Book writers. For years, reading culture in the West was boring and treated as a chore. Compared to Manga, Comic books were so hard to read because it was colored, too bright, and a lot of bland story telling. And word books had too many metaphors and patronizing stories. Not saying I hate Comic Books, just in comparison to Manga.

You really overestimated manga, light novels & anime creators, writers, animators etc. who've worked in that industry. In Japan, creatives there too face the same lack of amount of income from their work as their US counterparts, and are exploited by their studios. A lot of them are overworked, burned out, underpaid and face some really terrible physical & mental health issues. They don't get to enjoy their income just like the US creatives, nor they do get to have breaks. These isn't some "starving artist" situation, these are the real issues faced by Japanese animators. Unfortunately for them, for now, there are no means to create unions for creators, animators, writers, etc in Japan, so they can't fight back against the anime industry's own problems.

True. At the end of the day, most of these corporations could care less as long as they are still making a profit. To me, the power lies in the consumer. If a MAJORITY of us got involved in worker unions by not spending our money on these corporations, they would act fast due to fear of their company collapsing. And not just 100 people unplugging, but like 80% or dare I say, 100% of their customer base. Sadly, the public does not see the power they can have as a collective. In fact, we have become SO divided it is impossible for us to come together and bring these corporations to their knees. Instead, we are the ones on our knees. We have given them our power and they are using it better than us. These strikes do not affect their pockets, just their image, which most people don't even care about. If we did, these same companies that have been exposed for mistreating and underpaying their employees, or even doing harm to society, could not also be the same ones with the most market share.

I hope all the American writers are fired. They’ve sapped all the entertainment value from their shows and have made them so politicized that it’s a chore to watch. They’ve brought this upon themselves and now they’ll have to face the consequences. There are millions of people who can do their jobs better and for cheaper, and they’ll be replaced.

Around 2016, I ditched Hollywood for 2 straight years binging ONLY on Korean & Chinese series and movies on Netflix … as in general so much more interesting often absolutely brilliant. So sick of seeing westerner young people instant jumping each other’s bones … where with Korean series of 3 generations and no bone jumpings! I feel these first ones Netflix had were better than the ones it produced when it realized there was a market … espcially here in multi Asian cultures of Hawai’i. But now I will be expecting so much more from Netflix productions. And have LOVED all the sudden explosion of Chinese series since around 2017 like Ice Fantansy! And others like it. As well as Chinese period pieces where some had obviously tons of money to produce them were stunning! Of course I could not get enough of The Untamed! Thank you for this report.

Over 1,000 actors have now signed the letter to SAG saying they will strike if all their requests with the studios are not met. New names include: • Aubrey Plaza • Pedro Pascal • Charlize Theron • Ewan McGregor • Joaquin Phoenix • Jamie Lee Curtis Both sides of the SAG-AFTRA negotiations are reportedly considering an extension on making a deal up until July 7.
