Personally I think the 1974 World Cup marked the start of modern football. The match shown in this video doesn’t look out of place even now, aside from the fashion and hairstyles. Full of pace, robust tackles and closing down of space from both sides. Also, players back then were not afraid to try out different things. The Dutch players, especially Cruyff, Resenbrink, Suurbier and Van Hanagem were constantly using the outside of the foot passes with precision. The chipped Swedish free kick at the 2:47 min mark was also elegant.

partido epico. Alemania 1974 fue uno de los mejores mundiales en todos los aspectos hasta en la calidad de las transmisiones que nitidas parece que fueran partidos actuales a no ser por la vestimenta de los jugadores que delatan la epoca.

This game showed up Holland's weak finishing that would come back to haunt them in the final. Johnny Rep the culprit again.

I don't know if you're right : they scored 8 goals (one of rep) during the second round. But, the situation against Sweeden is similar at the final. I think Rinus Michel made the mistake not turn players (not use van de kerkoff and especially ruud geels, a real striker.

@@MrJeepsters Rep missed two guilt edged chances in the final and two again in 1978. A good winger but not really a goal scorer.

@@gunternetzer9621 that’s a very good point. In the 78 final he missed 2 excellent chances in the first half. It’s worth remembering too that the Dutch scored from a number of penalties in 74 and 78. Still, a great side, and Rep was still a great player imo.

@@Myschoolsout1 Not a great player - that label should only be reserved for people like Di Stefano, Cruyff and Pele for example. I would describe him as not a superior class player but not a bad one.

Cruijff played 76 european cup and his contribution was unsatisfactory. The problem is that in 1974 Ajax squad voted for appointing new captain and Cruijff was not the selected one. Cruijff got offended and immediately decided to move to Barcelona. This is not the behaviour of a nr.1 for sure and that has prevented that mighty Holland to win anything despite the great talent. Best squad leader ever was Maradona and that makes him the nr.1 as talent is not everything, it takes more to be the real nr.1. By the way. There was never the need to vote Maradona as captain. That was a given
