Ford didn't teach any of them how to drive a dry dual clutch transmission. People kill them, by creeping in slow traffic, instead sitting longer, like a manual transmission, or by riding the clutch, pointed uphill waiting at a light, instead of holding the brake pedal. The DPS6 should be driven like a manual, not a hydraulic clutch, or CVT automatic. The transmission is actually pretty damn cool...if you operate it correctly.

Ford should have taught her how to drive it, when she was buying it. It needs to be driven a bit aggressively. The Fiesta, and Focus DPS6, is completely the wrong transmission for gentle, slower drivers. It really needs to be worked out, to be dependable. Think: spirited manual transmission driving, and you know how it needs to be driven, to stay healthy. The problems mostly all stem from clutch dust buildup in the places you least want it...which doesn't happen, when you drive it more aggressively. Don't ride the clutches, or creep in stop and go traffic. To understand the Focus, and the Fiesta cars, you have to consider they are designed to be driven hard, and the brake pedal used often to hold yourself stopped at lights. It should feel just like a manual transmission, not a CVT, or hydraulic clutch (like your Grand Marquis)

TWO clutches. Do not creep in traffic. Do not ride the clutch, and mash the gas pedal harder every time you take off from a stop.. She prefers being driven aggressively, to gingerly...Think rally car.... this car is not actually for the gentle slow drivers. It's for drivers who like exciting, spirited driving. Not operating it how it likes, causes lots of problems. It's not really a slow economy car, at heart. At heart it thinks it's a rally car...true. 😉 @@camileepusey8914

Do you creep in traffic, drive slow, and gentle, and allow the clutch to hold you on the side of a hill at a light? ("Ride the clutch") all of these things are big no-no's with a DCT, especially a dry clutch DCT, like the DPS6. Ford really screwed up, when they didn't make a special point of teaching new buyers of DPS6 cars to correctly operate one. They should never be driven like you would a CVT, or a hydraulic clutch automatic. If you drive one a bit aggressively, and not like an old lady, it'll function correctly. If not, dust collects at the connection to the actuators, and binds up the forks, causing all kinds of problems. Spirited driving, keeps the dust out, and not riding the clutch, or excessively creeping in dense traffic, keeps the heat down.

If you hold the brake pedal at lights, that should be fine. If you don't have a fork binding issue, from dust collected at the actuators, because you drive the car too gently, the TCM should always disengage from 1st, and put you in neutral, automatically. Never "ride the clutch" and always try to be a bit spirited in your driving, with a DPS6. No creeping in traffic! Pretend you're driving a fully manual transmission. That's what makes the DPS6 happy, and reliable. And it's more fun, too! 😁

Not needed. Just hold the brake pedal, and DO NOT CREEP in dense traffic, or create an operating situation causing you to "ride the clutch": like using first gear to hold yourself on the side of a hill going up the hill, stopped at a light. I already tried something like that years ago, WAY back in 2013. I literally built a whole entire computer repair workshop, out of a fully-enclosed canopy that I ordered online, and set up on the back patio. It even had a raised hardwood floor, which I built using old pallets and scraps. It was nice, but also fairly small, not physically secure, and very close to the house, though, so I didn't really have much auditory privacy. It simply wasn't quite fit to live in, but I was using it to hang out in pretty frequently, and work on some computers. Business sucked though, and then I got the news of my mother dying, and I had to tear it down when I moved out. My dad and his spouse suddenly decided that they didn't want a canopy, or any more structures outside anymore. They wouldn't even give me a specific reason why, other than just wanting their little patio free again. Even if my family (and the new landlord) allowed me to try building something back there again, I'd never be able to come up with the money now. I can't even pay my bills anymore. I'm so deep underwater. I just keep falling into perpetual debt. I'm just too much of a depressed and dysfunctional mess now. Everything just fucking sucks.

@@Network126 They were pushing for the "sporty" quick shifting feel while also getting 40+mpg which this trans is quite good at (dry clutch systems have a lot less drag then wet clutches). The problem is people aren't used to giving cars gas, The lighter you are on the throttle the longer it slips the clutch/causes a lot of wear, On top of that it adapts to your driving style so if you drive like an old lady, The trans is gonna have a bad time and need pre mature clutch replacements (%90 of people ive talked to drive these cars like that and they all had clutch issues/overheating in traffic) I have to flog it about once a week to keep it from adapting to lazy 65mph highway driving, It gets very soft and lazy shifting/Slippy lol. These transmissions are a poor design yes. A wet clutch would of been a hell of a lot better, BUT if you drive em a certain way you get the longevity out of them. Did you know fords "fix" for customers complaining of shudder issues was to take the customers car and do 5 or so WOT 0-60 runs with it to scrub the clutches. Thats what they did. people drove em too gently and that caused clutch dust buildup/shudder on light acceleration lol. Drove for 1 minute for a bowl at food lion drove back doesn't go over 15 mph, got off the main road tried to do a 3 point turn and it doesn't go in reverse.... The codes are p07a3 and p07a5 and ford wanna charge 1900 for a new clutch to start. Found a mechanic who would do it for 600 since the part is only like 240 but Idk if I can even trust it being fine afterwards has 199k miles

It's now sitting at the Ford dealer, and they want over $3,300 to fix it. The technician also admitted that the car would just break again in another couple of years. We're now in the process of trying to get Ford to buy the damn car back altogether.

Dual clutch transmissions are basically manual transmissions controlled by a computer. All you're doing crawling in traffic is slipping the clutch over and over again until it overheats. Ford can be blamed for a ton of shit regarding this transmission, but it is squarely driver error here.

you are so wrong, in no way is this the drivers fault. if its controlled by the computer then the computer is at fault. it is not controlled by the driver. the driver can put it in neutral and it might help but thats insane that the driver would have to do that. these are supposed be manual transmissions that drive like an automatic. if buyers were told that the tranny will overheat if you dont put it in neutral at stop lights no one would buy it.

@DetroitMicroSound 11 ай бұрын
Absolutely. (2017 with 80k+ on my Fiesta, and my DPS6 works as it should.) Not only is creeping the worst thing you can do to a DPS6, but it's also obnoxious. Don't be a creeper, and don't let first gear hold you on the side of a hill, at a red light. Hold your brake pedal, that's part of the reason you have it. Good practice is, if you have come to a stop, continue holding the brake pedal, until it's time to pull away. ...just like a manual....Riding, or slipping the clutch is never correct operation, in a DCT, or manual, wet, or dry clutch. . Creeping in stop and go will never be a proper driving behavior. Take note, next time you see somebody staying put in slow traffic, instead of inching forward a thousand times. Every time you inch forward, you are re-engauging a clutch, and disengaging that clutch over and over. You will not see manual transmission drivers, inching forward, like you will a hydraulically actuated automatic driver. Again, improper transmission operation. Unessesary friction, causes unnecessary heat buildup, lots of clutch dust, premature wear, sticking forks, glazing on the clutch surface, worsening slip potential, and ultimately, damage.

Learn how to operate the DPS6 correctly, and it won't act up. No creeping in traffic, and no "riding the clutches". These things overheat your clutches. The DPS6 needs to be driven just like a manual. You gotta sit and hold your brake longer in traffic. You ever notic how manual transmission drivers wait longer to take off, and move up in traffic? They are consciously keeping their clutch cool.

First, learn how to operate the DPS6 correctly. Creeping is just about the worst behavior for a dual clutch transmission. You are creeping in this video, and as expected in long stop and go traffic, it's going to overheat, if you creep heavily.. Wrong operation. A dual clutch should be driven spiritedly, 75%+ of the time. Drive it with a bit of a heavy foot, and never creep, or use a clutch to hold you in place, going up hill. Use your brakes to stop, and to remain stopped, every time. Don't "ride the clutch". It will cause overheating, after a few minutes or more of continued action, engaging, and disengaging too frequently over a longer period of time, in lower gears. Ford made the terrible mistake of selling the Focus and Fiesta DCT'S to non-spirited drivers, who tend to creep along in traffic, instead of giving their clutches a chance to remain cool. We can't hold it against you, really, for not knowing they need to be operated differently than all other kinds of automatic transmission, because Ford didn't make you watch a video, teaching you how to operate one, before you signed the check, and drove off the lot... Never drive a Dual Clutch Transmission, like you can a CVT, or Hydraulic Clutch automatic, they are nothing alike. Can't fairly call it a lemon, when changing your driving style, would very likely eliminate your problem. (2017 Mk7.5 Fiesta DPS6 driver, tuning his car at the moment. An Eaton roots blower is in my cars future)
