We do maintenance and capsules cleaning of the Neumann SM 69 fet vintage mic.
The frequency response comparative check and breath test before and after service will be done.
Keep in mind,
that washing usually NOT will be done for other capsule designs called "edge termination", because their construction it is immune to dust and moisture. Washing these capsules can be done for remove heavy stubborn dirt only to improve the HF-response if it's really necessary.

Question: Can somebody explain why contamination creates the noise? I’ve just ‘fixed’ a TLM103 owned by my brother in law by cleaning it. And learned from this video (amongst others) how to do it. Despite having a degree in electronics I couldn’t explain the reason why the contamination causes noise, pops and could even make the mic ‘brown-out’ as it did on his mic. Trying to explain I mumbled about the high impedance circuitry around the condenser/capacitor (of a pretty low capacitance) being sensitive to discharges. And that the contamination could provide the path for the discharge. But wouldn’t that require the contamination to be between the condenser-plates? (Where I haven’t seen anyone cleaning) Any theories (preferably correct ones) would be appreciated. Thanks, Martijn. (Please don’t mind my username)

@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! There can be several reasons for a microphone dropout. # 1. There may be phantom power failures in your preamp. Also the phantom switch contacts on the some preamps can oxidize and this will cause a sound dropout. You will need a multimeter. You need to put crocodile clips on its probes and connect their to the XLR connector of the cable that goes into your mic to measure the voltage. The cable should be connected to the microphone and preamp, as normal, and turn on the phantom. Before that, disassemble the connector from any side where it will be more convenient to connect the probes. Connect the test leads to XLR pins 1 and 2 (or 1 and 3) and keep them there at all times. As soon as you hear a mic dropout, you need to check the readings of the multimeter. If it shows voltage on this time (about 35-40 volts), phantom is OK, and you need to look for a malfunction in the microphone or the cable. # 2. Signal dropouts and strange behavior of the microphone can also be caused by damage (breakage) in the shielding of the microphone cable. This also needs to be checked all 3 wires of mic cable with a multimeter (in resistance measurement mode). Alternatively, continue the test with another known good cable. # 3. Defects inside the mic. Keep in mind that malfunctions in the microphone FET circuitry are very rare and usually the circuitry can operate for quite a long time. Sound dropouts can be caused by some part with poor soldering (which is extremely rare)... Or a dirty capsule (this is more common) especially when you speak/sing and breathe out moist air onto the membrane. In any case, if the first points #1 & 2 will don't work, please let me know.

Hi, I have a black Neumann USM69 fet, about the same as the above, but with the amp section and the polar buttons on the mic. The top head barely works no matter how I turn it relatively to the bottom head, and sometimes it still gives good contact in only a few positions for a short time. Also, it sounds mostly very dull, a lot quieter and exhibits the same distortions/noise you show here. The few moments it has good contact, the sound is equally good on both sides. How would you fix this? Thank you

@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan, sorry for the long answer, now I has been attacked a lot of work in a studio and I do not always have time to go to KZfaq to read the comments and respond. If one of your systems on the USM69 works as you described, it could be either a dirty capsule, or a defect in the flexible wiring inside the head mechanism (wire breakage that appears during rotation), or something else. First all, it need to make careful diagnostics of your USM69 before doing any membrane cleaning... Thanks.

Good video. Is there a specific type of brush you use or will any small painting brush be ok? After you clean the capsule with a brush and distilled water... how long does it take to dry?
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Usually for capsule cleaning I used a very thin brush for painting, one of the thinner ones. And in this video too. It's not the thinnest "# 3", but it is soft and has long hair, and it suits me best for capsule work. This brush is made from Siberian mink (kolinsky) hairs. Also, a squirrel hair brush works well. After cleaning, the microphone immediately works fine, but it is better to leave it to dry for about a day at a fairly warm room temperature (25-30 degrees Celsius).

@@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice thanks for the great advice! I will do as you suggested. Have you ever used a dry brush to just remove hairs and dust as opposed to grime?
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrSeeker42 No, I have never tried dry brushing (even in the early days when I started to gain experience in washing capsules). Since, firstly, most of the dirt that settles on the capsule is quite firmly adhered there, since saliva and moisture when using a microphone contribute to this. The smoker's breath contains even more sticky tar, which is deposited on the membrane. And secondly, water serves as a lubricant between the brush and the membrane. It makes the cleaning process less abrasive.
@MrSeeker42
@MrSeeker42 3 жыл бұрын
@@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice thanks! I did as you suggested and found that after initially using a brush moistened with distilled water, I simply poured distilled water over the capsule and this did the job rather well. The brush only served for loosening the grime. The gentle pouring did the rest. After a few dabs of a napkin to collect the excess water, I set it aside to dry for a few days. :-)

@@MrSeeker42 It is great! Now you have your good experience :) But... the main thing is not to overdo it with water, otherwise it can get inside the capsule, stay there and cause problems ...

i accidentally rubbed off a tiny spot on my rode nt1a :( now it has a tiny black spot at the middle of the gold plated capsule. would it affect and potentially destroyed my capsule? please help
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice Жыл бұрын
It's very annoying... But if in the end the microphone works fine, then apparently the capsule survived. Do nothing else and leave it as is. The capsule will have a slightly lower capacity, and the microphone will slightly reduce its sensitivity. Perhaps so much that you won't even notice it. The main thing is that the surface of the membrane should not be noticeably deformed. And if there are no deposits or oxides in the area where you removed the gold plating, then the black spot on the gold plating will not increase over time. Yes, I just remembered... A few years ago, a friend of mine tried to selflessly clean the dust on the surface of the Gefell UM57 membrane, he simply wiped it with a paper towel... the membrane of course was badly damaged, and one side of the microphone did not work.

@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice 3 жыл бұрын
@JVSd-SG

@@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice простите я начало пролистал, т.к.
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice 3 жыл бұрын
@JVSd-SG
@JVSd-SG 3 жыл бұрын
@@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice спасибо.
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice 3 жыл бұрын

Hello Sergio, sorry for the long answer, I just checked the alerts. The signal level needs near a line level. I put about 1.1 volts AC RMS, and when I went just above that voltage, the mic started to clip. If you do not have a hardware signal oscillator, then the output of any sound card will do!
