Elmyra 2, from Neutral Labs, is a four-voice experimental synthesiser that’s geared towards drones and gritty ambient soundscapes - but with a bit of clever patching it can do a whole lot more. It’s available as a 42 HP Eurorack module or as a semi-modular desktop unit, pre-built or DIY option. In this video, I run through the front panel controls and build a few patches to put it through its paces. Thanks to Neutral Labs for supplying the unit.

Some very creative patches there, very impressive. And woah, that synced LFO to modulate the wave at 21:10 sounds crazy good, I don't think I've ever even tried that myself. 😁

Hey Tom - Great overview, with examples, of the Elmyra 2! Seems to be really musical when paired with a modular synth. Love the musical example when you introduce the sequencer.

Getting a high pitched hum coming through my phone and standing speakers. Goes away when I pause the video. Ignoring that, glad I found your channel.

Strange, I can't hear anything like that (or see anything obvious in the spectrum of the audio) - your ears must be better than mine!

@@TomChurchill I hear it, too, really loud actually. I have in earbuds, it's as loud as the synth at some parts.

Great Video! Thanks alot. Does the Elmyra save any settings after you switched it of and back on? Or does it always start from an init patch?
@TomChurchill

Thanks! It doesn't save settings between power cycles, so it always starts from an init patch.

That was a really great video and thank you for the inspiration. I have just finished making the Elmyra2 kit and had it now two days. Cannot seem to get record or play to work. Anyway….I don’t understand what a clock divider is but it seems You are putting a timed cv voltage to each of the voices gate inputs. Can I do the same with an SQ1 sequencer? Yours came to life when you did this. Is a clock divider a sequencer? Many thanks Tom.
@TomChurchill
@TomChurchill 3 ай бұрын
Cheers! In this video I'm just using a clock divider as a source of rhythmic gate voltages to trigger each of the four voices. You could do something similar with any sequencer that puts out at least four gates/triggers, like a drum sequencer. Don't think an SQ1 would really work for this patch. A clock divider just takes a steady input clock and puts out several divisions of that clock, e.g. the /2 output puts out one clock for every two at the input, the /3 output puts out one clock for every three at the input etc. I recommend this video if you want to know more: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9ZlmZef1dXTkoU.html

@@TomChurchill Thanks Tom. I appreciate your reply. As you have guessed I am new into this. I am reading up about clock dividers and trying to " get" how they work. I am almost there. Checking out a little bit on a diy one. I sort of understand the schematic diagrams. By brain does not work unless I know what is going on inside. I really really liked your video and you deffo know what you are doing. I look to people like you and try to learn something. I am 73 so it takes a bit longer. I have to do this synth thing to keep my brain active. I just love synths!!!! Pete

Did this thing's audio go directly into the eurorack? Did it have to go through some kind of adapter first?

The wavetables sound quite similar to each other, at least those you demoed. Is that perhaps because the output is pretty driven?
@TomChurchill
@TomChurchill 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, the default mix setting adds a fair amount of saturation which does contribute to that. You can turn the saturation down (or off) which can make things sound clearer, but you're never going to get clean sine waves out of this thing :)
@KorhanErel
@KorhanErel 4 ай бұрын
@@TomChurchill well, yes, it's a wavetable synth and sine-wave fanatics should look elsewhere, but I was surprised by the lack of timbral variation between its wavetables. Cheers
