I think the main reason why downward motions are illegal is because ot indicates a loss of control during the lift. In powerlifting, all lifts should be performed in a controlled motion, but who knows, maybe some federations might consider a downeard motion as legal.

Red lighting for downward motion in the squat and bench makes sense to me. It gives the spotters free reign to come in and rescue the lifter without worrying that they're stealing a potentially good lift away. But, yeah, that's not really a concern for the deadlift.

I think what he means by calfs impacting a lift Is if you’re pulling sumo. When putting sumo your legs aren’t perpendicular to the bar and for some people might even be parallel or close to it. In cases like these people‘s calves but if big enough could potentially get in the way of the bar. This is because the front of the leg would not be facing towards the bar but rather the side of it.

Hitching is tricky cause people will max out their technique and it will become “a different lift” like sumo. But the “downward motion” is kinda weird tbh, if you save a lift it was probably harder to begin with i don’t see what kind of advantage you would get from that.

I’m not gonna consider that hitching the part where it makes contact with your thighs barely noticeable and it moves like an inch after that that’s just moving into lock out after contact with your thigh this is going to happen if you have big muscles it is inevitable so let’s not red lining it it would be different if he started dragging directly from the knees but he was pretty much At lock out by the time the bar touched his hip

I think hitching shouldn't be allowed because it makes the lift easier. I don't understand why downward motion is banned though. If anything it is even more impressive to work through a downward motion likely caused by some sort of misgroove and still complete the rep.

Either it’s failing a couple inches off the floor or so, or once it passes the knees it’s going up. Might be different once you get into the 500s tho? Downward movement definitions need to be changed, because I’ve seen a view where the bar comes up uneven and it gets red lights. Hitching with a certain intent is bad, but it’s hard to define that with words. Ramping maybe don’t allow positions where the weight is supporting you entirely. Or just look at the actual lift instead of just going by the textbook definition of the rules

I understand hitching because it is what happens when you’re unable to lock out smoothly, so it’s a strength issue. But downward motion makes absolutely no sense. It’s significantly harder. If you fight through accidental downward motion and bring it up to a clean lockout you literally had to do more work. Not that it should be rewarded but sure as hell not punished imo. At least not with a no lift
